Should people make assumptions on the character traits of outsiders? Appearances both mask and reveal the characters. Sometime a rough and tough exterior gives way to reveal a gentle and loving heart. In some novels the appearances of some characters remain relatively fixed throughout the novel, while others undergo subtle and drastic changes that force us to question. Do appearances deceive, reveal or confuse? Do characters speech and actions contrast with their appearances? People are judged by outside looks appearances and no one is stopping to promote stops promoting this myth. Discrimination also can be seen in the novel In the Heat of the Night by John Ball, where the words and appearance do not match with the personality …show more content…
of characters. Hence people should not make assumptions on the character traits of outsiders and their background proving that appearances can be deceiving. Because one’s willingness to work is not based on their appearance and physical appearance does not tell one about the person's past and education. From the appearance of various characters one can not tell if those characters are willing to work or not.
This thing can be seen in the characters of Virgil Tibbs, Sam and Ralph. At one place Gillespie exploded “Still examining the body! What the hell is he trying to do, find out how a man died who was hit over the head enough to break his skull?” (Ball 27). This quote tells us about important feature of Virgil Tibbs that he was a very hard working homicide investigator. He kept on examining the dead body although it was not his duty. At that time Gillespie thought that negroes can never be able to do this task and he was getting furious over Tibbs, because Virgil was doing something which was not assigned to him. For Gillespie it was a simple thing to catch the suspect but for Tibbs, the case of murder requires a lot of effort. He was putting his soul and his blood into it. Therefore, it proves that although Virgil Tibbs was a negro and Gillespie did not like negroes. But still Virgil was willing to work proving that appearances can be deceiving. Furthermore, the appearances were deceiving in the case of Sam Wood. It can be seen in this quote where John Ball says, “ He wanted to leave, but when he half started to rise, he remembered that he had offered to stay on duty and that he had not received an answer” (Ball 28). In this quote it can be seen that Sam is willing to work for longer hours. He has been working whole night and he need to go home and sleep in morning. …show more content…
But being the murder case so sensitive issue, he could not go home as ordered by Bill Gillespie. It was not his work time, even then he stayed there. It shows that Sam Wood was ready to put extra effort to solve this case proving that outer looks are not always revealing. In addition to that Virgil Tibbs character was another proof of hard work and dedication, which can not be seen from the very appearance of him. Virgil Tibbs says, “If you don’t mind, I’d like to ride with you tonight.”(Ball 88) This quote shows Tibbs dedication. He was dealing with the case of murder with full zeal and zest. He was very confident of his ability to meet all the challenges. He wanted to see all angles of the dead body to solve the case of murder. He was willing to ride all night with Sam Wood, to see the whole track on which Sam patrols. He proved with his hard work that even negroes can do anything and everything what whites can do. Hence proving that outer looks and appearance do not tell us about the abilities of people. Sometimes slim people are strong from within and Ralph is one of such personalities. It can be seen where author says, “The night courtman was a thin nineteen-year-old whose too long arms thrust below the cuffs of his soiled shirt…, his sharp bony face still showed the signs of acne, his lower lip hung slightly open.” (Ball 4) Appearances are totally deceiving in case of Ralph. It is hard to digest that a thin nineteen-years old boy can commit a serious crime of murder. It does not go with Ralph’s personality. The murder seems to be done by a very muscular man. He was thin and bony from outside but from within, he was hard as rock. He was very smart and tricky to have planned the situation of murder and then to carry it out. Even for a professional homicide investigator, it took a long time until he could came to a conclusion that Ralph is the real murderer. It shows that although he was physically weak but emotionally he was so strong that he was willing to do a crime and he did it. Hence proving that physical image of a person can mislead others. Therefore it can not be said that how much a person is willing to work by looking at their outer personality. Sometimes character’s impression contrast with their actual personality and background.
Person’s education can not be seen from their physical appearance. This is evident in Tibbs explanation of dead body where Tibbs Says, “It was evident that the fatal blow had been struck by a blunt instrument at an angle of about seventeen degrees from the right as the skull is viewed from the rear. That makes it almost certain that the assailant was right-handed.” (Ball 34). This quote shows that Virgil Tibbs was very confident and sure of the decisions and judgements he makes. This confidence was the result of his education. He has gained full training and was well-aware of how to catch the murderer and what things should be considered while investigating. He knew that Mr Mantoli was attacked from the back at seventeen degree angle, and to attack in this way the assailant would be right handed. He has learnt all this from his training, education and experience. On the contrary Gillespie can not differentiate between the murderer and the suspect. Hence this quote stands strongly in favor of the fact that character traits of people should not be assumed on the basis of their education and background. In addition, this theme can also be seen in another quote of Virgil Tibbs where Pete says, “Confirm Virgil Tibbs member Pasadena Police Department past ten years. Present rank investigator. Specialist homicide, other major crimes. Reputation excellent. Advise if his services needed your
area.” (Ball 23). This quote proves Ball’s point of view that anyone can do anything irrelevant of their education and background. It shows that Tibbs was a very professional man. He has studied to get this post which was acknowledge by Pasadena police department. He was advised by his officer that he is a specialist homicide investigator, his reputation is excellent. Hence he would be an asset to help solve this case of murder. From the very appearance it was not expected from Tibbs personality to be so educated to get important clues of murderer. It was a great shock for Gillespie and Sam that a negro can be an educated and well-trained person. This proves that one cannot judge others education by their outlook. Similarly by thinking about Sam Wood as a cop the picture that comes to our mind is that he would be a well educated and well trained person. In chapter one, John Ball says, “Sam had not had any special course of training for his job...But as instructed, he had studied the civic, county, and state codes”(Ball 8). Sam was trying to remember what he has read about dead bodies. Although he has not taken any course which can tell him how to catch the murdered. Yet he is trying to catch the murderer. His appearance was deceiving. It seems that being a policeman, he knows all the regulations of police department but it was not like this. Yet he was dealing with the case of murder very professionally. Then he went to Mantoli’s house very confidently as if he is managing this case of murder. Despite the fact that he did not had any education before but still he is willing to work hard in his profession, showing that physical appearance does not tell one about the person’s past and education. Thus people should not belief that one’s past and education is based on their appearance. Doleras Purdy is a strong proof of contrasting personality where appearance do not align with characteristics. “Doleras Purdy is eighteen years old; she passes for sixteen so she will not be behind the point where she should be.”(Ball 151) She was two grades behind from where she should be. She and her family lack intellectual level and had no educational background. Although she was not well educated yet. She accused Sam of seducing her. She was not afraid of telling a lie. The way she talks shows that she was lacking in education. This demonstrates that Purdy’s outer image was in contrast to her education and background. Thus one should not judge others from their outer looks because education and background are very skin deep and not superficial characteristics. In all these characters it can be seen that their appearances do not tell one about what a person really is. Hence people should not assume about anyone from the looks and background. From the outer personality no one can guess about other person's willingness to work. Furthermore, the looks can not be a clue towards person’s background. Characters keep on changing . Although some characters are flat but this novel have round characters. In addition, John Ball has very skillfully portrayed the idea of discrimination throughout the novel “In the heat of the night”. Therefore, assumptions should not be made by only looking at the people’s surface appearance because appearances can be deceiving.
Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). Westerberg concluded with the fact that during the time he spent with Chris, McCandless neither mentioned his
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
These are not the only reasons for urgency to find a killer; the Solicitor General of Atlanta’s circuit, Hugh M. Dorsey, desperately needed a successful conviction because he had recently failed to convict two accused murderers. He was concerned about putting together a case that would hold up in court; no matter what lengths he had to go to in order to accomplish this. Overtime, it became obvious that Dorsey did not necessarily believe that Frank was guilty, but recognized that the political values of his position were uncertain.
In these five paragraphs I will be writing about the book “Hotel on the Corner of Sweet and Bitter” written by Jamie Ford and five quotation that important and made up the theme for me. This book gives a feel a lot of different emotions. The first quote was “‘You are Chinese aren’t you,Henry? That’s fine. Be who you are, she said, turning away, a look of disappointment in her eyes. “But I’m an American’’(p. 60). This quote is important because it shows how Keiko believes even if her parents are Japanese she feels more American then Japanese since she barely spoke Japanese.
The book, Heat written by Mike Lupica, is a novel about a young boy named Michael Arroyo who faces many difficulties throughout the book, all for his right to play his beloved game of baseball. Michael lives with his dad, Papi, and his brother, Carlos. They are all Cubans who came to the United States for a better chance to follow their dreams. Papi always encourages Michael to play baseball and he always has high hopes for Michael’s career in baseball. It is right to believe in Michael so much because later he fulfills his father's dream for him. After Papi dies of heart failure, Michael still continues Papi dream for him, to be the Little League Champion. Throughout the book Michael meets two characters who have significant impacts on him,
People have goals everyday, believe it or not some people think that dreams aren't worth it. I believe that it is worth it to dream because it gives a person a goal, it makes them feel good, and it makes them stronger. I know this from The Pearl, A Cubs video, the Susan Boyle video, and We Beat the streets.
To begin with, Sam Wood is one of the main characters and is racist towards a black man, named Virgil Tibbs. The first racial thought that was made towards Virgil, was “Sam saw that his face lacked the broad nose and thick heavy lips that characterized so many southern laborers” (Ball 15). This proves that Sam categorizes people by their physical features and thinks that all coloured people should have the same physical characteristics. Secondly, while they were exiting through the door of Bill Gillespie’s office, Virgil Tibbs did not take any time to wait for Sam to exit first, which left Sam quite surprised. “Ordinarily he would not have permitted a Negro to proced him through a doorway, but this Negro did not wait for him to go first” (22). This quote makes it clear that Sam believes white people are more superior to coloured people. Finally, Sam was evaluating the thought that it was clear Virgil would have a better chance than Bill Gillespie to solve the homicide because of his forensic scientist background and because Bill Gillespie had no crime scene investigator training. “He wanted the crime solved, but he w...
This paper will consider eye witness testimony and its place in convicting accused criminals. Psychology online (2013) defines “eye witness testimony” as a statement from a person who has witnessed a crime, and is capable of communicating what they have seen, to a court of law under oath. Eye witness testimonies are used to convict accused criminals due to the first hand nature of the eye witnesses’ observations. There are however many faults within this system of identification. Characteristics of the crime is the first issue that will be discussed in this paper, and the flaws that have been identified. The second issue to be discussed will be the stress impact and the inability to correctly identify the accused in a violent or weapon focused crime. The third issue to be discussed is inter racial identification and the problems faced when this becomes a prominent issue. The fourth issue will be time lapse, meaning, the time between the crime and the eye witness making a statement and how the memory can be misconstrued in this time frame. To follow this will be the issue of how much trust jurors-who have no legal training-put on to the eye witness testimony, which may be faltered. This paper references the works of primarily Wells and Olsen (2003) and Rodin (1987) and Schmechel et al. (2006) it will be argued that eye witness testimony is not always accurate, due to many features; inter racial identification, characteristics of the crime, response latency, and line up procedures therefore this paper will confirm that eyewitness testimonies should not be utilised in the criminal ju...
While it may seem that society’s restrictions continually halt the way one progresses in life, the ability to defy the odds and overcome them truly defines a person’s courage. This fact is evident in the novel, All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr, where an orphan named Werner is continuously forced to participate in cruel Nazi practices because his enrollment in the Hitler Youth is the only way he is able to get the proper education to become an engineer. Similarly, in Keeping the Faith, directed by Edward Norton, a local rabbi named Jake is restricted from publically dating his childhood best friend, Anna because of the fact that she is not Jewish. First off, characters originally alter their views and behaviour due to their circumstances,
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry has many interesting characters. In my opinion, the most fascinating character is Ruth because of her many emotions and captivating personality. She goes through extreme emotions in the play such as happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Ruth is very independent, firm, kind, witty, and loving.
Throughout the novel, there are many judgements made based on only appearance. For example when Janie is entering town at the beginning of the story, the ladies on the proch gossip saying things like,
Looks can be a very determining factor, and sometimes people's appearances can affect what she or he can or can not do in society and what they do to fit into it. The play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, is a good example of how this idea is put into play. The main character, Cyrano de Bergerac, is portrayed as a hideous person, because of the size of his nose. As someone who does not fit with in society, yet he changes his morals, attitude, and personality to make up for his grotesque appearance. As the play progresses from act to act we the readers realize that Cyrano is this magnificent character. We begin to understand how his ugliness has shaped his life, how the deformity on his face has forced him to learn new skills and to become a better person.

Lawlessness, no matter the location, is and will always be a danger. In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, written by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford, a professional hunter, falls of a yacht and into the arms of a man-hunting General named Zaroff. In a similar storyline, but in a form of a film, High Noon, written by Carl Foreman, is about a Marshal named William Kane who struggles between two major decisions: staying back in the city and watching the clock tick by till it whistles at noon, or fulfilling the duty of being a good husband to a Quaker named Amy. Both of the brilliant texts have many disparities such as the characters, yet, they share many similitudes such as the setting and the conflict.
Appearances are much more than how something simply looks. An appearance is how something is viewed in various facets, including the physical, intellectual, and emotional traits of the given person. There are also different points of view when discussing appearances. There are the appearances we give ourselves, and the appearances we give to others. Even though these appearances define who we are to the naked eye, they are almost never the complete truth. People characterize us based on what they see, and not necessarily who we actually are. This false sense of truth masks reality, and deceives the beholder.
