The Bean Trees Essay In The Bean Trees by Barbra Kingslover Taylors perception changes more positively on the role of women in society.of the role of women changes throughout the book as she faces different challenges when she leaves home. As Taylor meets people who aren't from a small town, she learns a lot from them. Taylor is a girl from Kentucky that leaves her town to avoid getting pregnant in high school and she ends up driving to Arizona and is given a kid. Taylor goes on to meet people that turn into her family and she is introduced to the real world. Taylor leaves her hometown to not get pregnant like the rest of her high school. Taylor starts motherhood ironically when she tries to get away from it by leaving her home town. Taylor is surprised when she finds out a woman owns a mechanic shop. Taylor talks to the woman and says “back home you would run out of business”(pg 59 The bean trees). Taylor is surprised that a woman owns a mechanic shop because where she's from, women don't own businesses; they just do housework. This leads Taylor to experience different things she doesn't see back in her hometown, like women owning mechanic shops. Taylor is proud of Mattie’s sanctuary and the risks she takes to advertise and keep people safe.”I had no idea how Mattie would know such things but if she said it was so, it was”. 79.
