The process shows that we need to “Demonstrate thorough engagement with the iterative processes of reading, writing, and speaking” (Winek). In this course we had a process for writing, which includes prewriting, drafting, editing, and integrating feedback. These steps made it less complicated to complete my essays.
Throughout the whole semester, the variety of processes helped me better my writing. When I first began writing each of my essays, I would do research that related to the topic I had chosen. I would read through the article I had chosen to see if it had enough evidence to support my topic. Once I was done with all my research it became less complicated for me to begin my essay. Even though I had my ideas on how to write the essay,
it was troubling because I didn't know how to put all the ideas together to make sense. The process I found challenging throughout the semester was when I had to finalize my essay to turnitin. Another thing that was kind of challenging for me was sentence structure in my essays because some of my sentences were run on. The essay I believe I had trouble on starting was the definition essay because I was overthinking it. I wasn't quite sure what was expected, so when I attended office hours it became clear to me and I laughed because it was so simple. The writing process became easier when doing an essay after essay, of course, what was complicated at first for me was doing the research. From the conference feedback forms and revision forms when filling them out made me realize what I needed to do and improve on. Writing my own definition in the journals I had to think how I was going to define them. So those journal entries helped me understand a bit more before starting my definition essay. Writing those two journals expanded my way of thinking and on how words or things can have different meanings. Writing essays have always been my weakness, but after this semester I believe I have improved in my writing and reading skills. Following the processes made it easier to complete the tasks. The research, reading and writing and following the steps for each one made it clear on how to do the work.

Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
At the beginning of the semester, I had a different idea of what is considered as good writing. In my first rough draft for my first essay, “Post-secondary education and cultural backgrounds”, I demonstrated mostly of my preconceived idea of what good writing is suppose to be. I tried to sound intelligent by asking rhetorical questions and using big words improperly. I noticed that there was no harmony and organization on my essay as a whole. I had no idea what MLA was. With the help of the Writing Center and my determination on continually revising my essay, my scattered ideas developed into cohesive statements. I learned the use of topic sentences, thesis, reference page, page number, and other given structures on writing a paper. As I tried to develop my skills to becoming a good writer, my writing and knowledge has slowly grew into the accepted academic text.
As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
“If writing didn 't require thinking then we 'd all be doing it.” (Jeremiah Laabs). Whether a person is aware of it or not, there is a process to writing that everyone goes through. I find it difficult to write essays from time to time, so I follow the writing process. The writing process is an approach to writing that involves pre-writing, drafting, and revising and editing. The writing process helps develop facts and ideas from reading about the topic to writing and editing essays.
A process is used to make a task simpler by dividing the task into parts that can be done individually. When you start writing an essay from beginning from end, you get stuck figuring out how to write introduction and it discourages to finish the essay before you have started. Instead start writing the body paragraphs, conclusion and then write the introduction. The first draft is never perfect visit writing centers for help or ask others to help revise your essay. Also reading your paper out loud gives you a better understanding what the paper sounds like and corrections that need to be made. Often times when we read a paper in our minds we skip over the mistakes or correct mistakes without knowing it. Correcting your essay many times will help complete your ideas in your essay, this helps the reader to be able to follow the ideas in the essay and not get lost. By doing these steps you better understand why you are writing an essay and the next steps to take.
I was never a person that liked to write essays. This semester I really enjoyed writing those essays and specially because I was learning new things while writing them. Some things I could do to improve my essay writing are not to wait till the last three or four days before I turn my essay in to start doing it. Another thing I will do is if I forget how to do something or about some rule in the common errors I made I will just go back to all the lessons I printed out to have as reference. I think those will help me allot. And one last thing I will do to improve my writing is to try my best not to confuse all those words I got confused. I will do my best to learn each word and its rule of where it goes so I won’t have the same mistakes I had this semester.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
My perception of what it takes to be a good writer has drastically changed through the years. What began as a simple interpretation of the text or topic has since developed into a more conceptual, open-minded, and creative way of thinking and responding. Good writing isn’t strictly limited to that, however. It also includes copious amounts of framework, reading, and research. Now, I am no writing expert myself.
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
A mentally disabled but diligent female high school student attends a tutoring session at the learning center to work on a classroom writing assignment. Despite encouragement and prompts from the tutor, the student is unable to write. She states that she hates writing and declares that she will take a zero for the grade rather than complete the assignment.
Honestly, I feel that my writing so far should be much better. I tend to struggle with writing so when I finally get the essay/discussion post written many are still in dire need of assistance with punctuation. But by that point I am ready to just be done with writing and have a bad habit of merely submitting them just to not have to deal with it anymore.
As a college student, I took the first seminar course in order to improve my writing skills. In this semester, we focused on the relationship between human identity and technological process by reading, discussing and writing different papers. Obviously, my writing skills have been improved a lot. In this paper, I will first go through the skills I mastered before college and then discuss the writing skills that I learned from this semester.
Some of you were either gifted with being able to easily write a paper or many of us are the writers who never know where the hell, to start. For the ones that never know where or how to start, we have always depended on teachers to lead the way. I don’t think very many students ever stop to think about how their past instructors have shaped their writing. We don't notice the ongoing cycle of how dreadful writing an essay is until a particular instructor makes you aware of all the bad habits you have assembled. Along the way of accumulating all these bad writing habits there have been teachers who have unmindfully caused this.
