The Case Study of Improving Child Nutrition in the Local Schools
The Health Department has been approached by a small group of fathers who are interested in improving child nutrition in the local schools.
• How will you prepare for your first meeting with the parents?
The first step for my preparation is to gather information from the school and the distract website about the menu and food options that kids have at their school.
I will make sure to listen and write any concern and ideas that they have that might improve their children nutrient at school.
• What data will you collect and from what sources?
I am going to collect the school obesity/physical activity plan from the school district website.
I will collect the breakfast/lunch menu and the snacks and beverages that are sold to student in lines, vending machines, and other venues from the school district website and also by going to school and asking them.
I will collect data about the school obesity rate and physical activity from school website, school administration and teachers.

I wanted to give you guys a more detail explanation about the opportunity at Children's Hospital. AltaMed Body Works Clinic has a 7-week nutrition program for overweight or obese children to attend with their parents. As families are being weight/measured and seen by a pediatrician, we will be preparing our material to teach with Dr. Kreutzer (RD) the nutrition curriculum part of the program. We can teach either the parents or the kids. I personally would prefer the kids curriculum since it's a bit easier, but we can decide that later as a group.

As a mother of three school aged children and majoring in health care management, I would definitely try my best to influence this area. I volunteer in my children’s classrooms and see the growing problem with childhood obesity. This legislation would also mandate increases in the amount of time children are allowed for physical activity in their school day as a lack of physical activity is a huge risk factor for overweight and obesity. Another thought is to designate a school health coordinator who will be responsible for maintaining and continuing the positive work that this study began. Utilizing the success of this program and others like it in this regards will lead to action on all levels of the social ecological framework. Ultimately, a multilevel examination of determinants and interventions needs to be aimed at preventing child overweight and obesity.
How many obese children have you seen today? Obesity is one of the largest health problems Americans are currently facing. It can lead to many baleful complications, including heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, cancer, mobility issues, high blood pressure, bullying, and lack of self-esteem. According to the CDC, about 17% of children and adolescents aged 2-19 are obese, and 30% are overweight. In adults, around 70% are overweight and 30% are obese. Nevertheless, our nation’s public schools are continuously promoting virulent foods through its lunch programs and on-campus advertisements. Although I understand that unhealthy food is cheaper and tastier, we must remember that those foods are causing our nation’s children to become obese. Factors such as cheap unhealthy foods in school lunches, junk food ads in schools, and teachers eating pernicious foods in class are causing more and more children to make the easy choice, the unhealthy choice. Obesity is a growing epidemic in the U.S, one that we need to promptly eradicate.

The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. In some cases, this is incorrect due to the parents and children 's lack of knowledge on what the actual state of optimal health is for children. For example, a hot topic around the world today is the issue of childhood obesity. This topic caught my eye because it is truly beginning to have a negative impact on today’s society and is something that needs to be addressed. It presented some ideas that as an early childhood educator working with children, I could make available to families, such as creating awareness in parents so they are more knowledgeable about how important it is to get involved with their child’s school or Parent Advisory Council to help promote programs such as fundraising for healthy eating events or school lunch. Encourage parents and families to talk to model to their making healthy food choices to their children including making and eating together; To get involved with their child’s daycare provider or other caregivers to ensure healthy food choices are offered, and to encourage children to stay fit with fun activities.
