The Importance of Vaccine Preventable Diseases

Un immunized kids are starting to become a risk factor in our Texas school, to a point where they are starting to exclude students from school activities.

I speak from first hand knowledge, not only am I faced with these problems on a day to day basis, my daughter was diagnosed with pertussis from an un immunized contact person, so I know the importance of immunizations. (tell story about Serenity)

This evening we will discuss:
1. The importance of vaccines.
2. Ways to improve our Immunization rates.
3. Where you can take your child for low-cost or no cost vaccines.

Not only is un immunized children on a dramatic rise in Texas, statistics show that there was 5,465 cases of vaccine preventable diseases reported in Texas during 2004 resulting in 132 deaths

III. SECOND MAJOR IDEA
In 1992 Texas initiated a pilot program called ImmTrac that is a free service of the Texas Department of State Health Services. This secure, confidential registry stores a child’s immunization information electronically in one central system and offers physicians, parents and schools easy access to a child’s immunization history. Immtrac can ensure that children are vaccinated on time and protected from vaccine preventable diseases.

Immtrac has showed significant success by improving our levels of coverage by 10% in each of the vaccine categories.
