HOW DO WE IMPROVE OUR WORKING BRAIN The ability to remember and process information is called Working Memory. The usefulness of this memory cannot be overemphasized because of its innumerable benefits to human success and greatness. Improving our working memory influences and enhances every aspect (school, work, relationship, etc) of human life from childhood to death. Currently, there is no perfect way to improve working memory, but there have been several ways that can help enhance cognitive performance in this area. Though not conclusive, some studies in the past have shown some level of post-training improvement in the cognitive function of the brain, which suggests that brain training could have similar effects too for us in this age. Using medications to improve brain function As strange as it may sound, some medications used to manage psychiatric disorders can help improve the working brain in healthy people. Adderall for example which is a stimulant primarily prescribed for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), have been used for enhancing cognitive performance. The effects it has on the catecholamine system implies that the executive functions of those who consume them would be increased, leading to the improvements of the brain’s ability to process information stored in working memory and also focus the attention on a task at hand. The side effect of these drugs, however, ranges from minor effects like Constipation, insomnia, headache, hair loss, diarrhea etc to long-term effects like heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure) and tachycardia (irregular heart

The process of thinking and problem solving relies heavily on the use of previous experience and memory also makes it possible for us to acquire language and to communicate with others. Memory also plays a basic part in the process of perception, since we can only make sense of our perceptual input by referring to our store of previous experiences.
“Working Memory Training is an evidence-based intervention for improved attention.” Working memory training is designed to help those with specific mind disorders. The main idea behind this program is to use brain training techniques such as monotonous memory trails, to teach people to train their mind to better perform. Working memory training is also considered to be a good alternative to medication supplements for those who cannot take them. For example, say you have just been diagnosed with ADHD and you are prescribed medication from your doctor. Over period of time while taking your medication, you find that the medication helps with your ADHD but it causes you to feel depressed, a common side effect of most brain disorder medications. So instead of continuing the medication, you take on the working memory training program. Though there have been numerous studies proving that working memory training is helpful, there have also been studies that say otherwise. In recent years, these studies have proven that the training does not have as big of an effect on specifics such as attention, reading and language skills as it does with short-term memory. This does not mean that working memory training is useless. Over time, new developments of this program have proven to successfully improve brain function not only with those suffering from ADHD but also indecent educational performance, dyslexia, and several language disorders. With this information, we can only hope to continue furthering our research in order to better help those struggling with brain disorders. This essay will firstly briefly describe the theories and important facts about the original multi-store model of memory (MSM) and the working memory model (WMM).
According to Baddeley and Hitch (1974) what constitutes as working memory can be divided into four distinct components which contribute to the processes of memory. They are the phonological loop, the visual spatial sketchpad, the episodic buffer and the central executive (in Passer, Smith, Holt, Bremner, Vliek, 2009).
The person is consciously processing the information. There are two characteristics to working memory that is important: limited capacity and information is lost over time. Working memory begins at the age of six but becomes more effective over the years. It is important to activate the information you want regularly so one does not lose the information. The next term is long-term memory and that is permanent; it can be of knowledge or events and it has unlimited capacity. Even though you want to remember as much as possible, everything you learn won’t go into your long-term memory. There can be a few issues with long-term memory like initial encoding of the information, storage (getting it into the long-term area), trying to find the right information and trying to retrieve the information. Long-term memory grows with age. Then there is reconstructive memory which is when we recall situations we remember pieces of the event but then make up the rest of it based on what we can infer from our memory.
