According to the Merriam-Webster Online dictionary ("Women Studies", 2013), Women Studies are the multidisciplinary study of the social status and societal contributions of women and the relationship between power and gender. They are based on the principle of the unity of theoretical criticism and practical radical transformation (Pandhe, 1988). As a field in an academic discipline, it owes its origins and existence to the distinctive practice of Women's Movement which gained momentum in the late 1960s and early 1970s (Pandhe, 1988). Most of the research work done in the field of Women Studies was generated by the needs of the movement and was finally meant to lead to social action having a liberating effect on women (Pandhe, 1988).
