The first scene in Macbeth plays a vital role.We as the readers are introduced to the three Witches.The witches were believed to be attendants of the devil who had sold their souls to be given the possession of evil powers.The presence of the witches sets the tone for the rest of the tragic play.

The weird sisters plan to meet Macbeth and then misguide him.We are already introduced to the tragic protagonist Macbeth via the witches.He is the target of the threesome who have almost already seen into his soul.The readers are left bewildered as to why Macbeth has been singled out in this manner?the witches have realized that it will easier to ‘wraught’ with his ’mettle’ as he is the more pliable and weaker victim than Banquo.

Another prominent factor in the scene is the lurking evil and darkness.There is no light present.The images of thunder , lightening , rain , sunset and fog are all associated with darkness.In the play all sinister and dastardly deeds will be commited either in the dark or when there is no light.There are references to a grey cat Greymalkin and a toad Paddock who call the witches.These are the attendant spirits to the devil and to the witches who are at their beck-and-call and need their support to carry out their vile conquests.The toad was believed to be another form of Satin as described by Milton in a ‘ Paradise lost ‘ where the Devil took upon the form of a toad to tempt Eve initially.

The witches deliberately talk in riddles to confuse the readers telling half truths in order to keep the veil on their dark deeds.The witches talk of some battle being lost and won.The line is rather vague as we donot know what battle they are referring to-whether it’s the actual battle in which Macbeth and Duncan’s...

...h craft. In that era a lot of witch hunts were also done when many innocent women also were just killed if they were suspected of being witches. Since the play was written with an eye to please the reigning monarch King James the inclusion of witches was needed as James was a strong believer in witches and also was a scholar.James had also written a book called ‘Daemonologie’ and wanted to know the cause for evil in the world.To satisfy James and fan his pride for his scholarship on the subject Shakespeare inserted the element of witchcraft in his only Scottish play.

This is how the first scene in the play is important and significant.It prepares us for the doom and the reader is left pondering as to how the witches will tamper with Macbeth.The scene is boding and leaves us eager know about the time when Macbeth and the witches cross paths and have an encounter.
