Athletes who perform greatly in the field are good decision makers because of skills coaching. A coach plays a great role in an athlete’s life is great including helping them reach their full potential. The coach guides athletes to achieve great results while at the same time playing the role of a life mentor. A coach is, therefore, a teacher, a mentor a confidant and psychologist hence ensuring improvement in the overall performance of an athlete. There are three determinants of achievement in sports, talent, ability, and skill. Talent is inborn, skills are acquired through endless practice, and ability as a means of evaluating greatness where one delivers skill and talent to the highest level. The three factors are essential for one to become a great athlete because if an athlete lacks ability, they cannot deliver at all, no matter how talented they are. Sports specialization among young people is when a child or teenager trains for and competes in only one sport. They work extremely hard year-round in order to become well-rounded in every aspect of the game. They make sacrifices and put their health in jeopardy in order to become the ultimate participant in their sport. One of the many young athletes who is only participating in and focusing on one sport is fifteen-year-old OJ Mayo from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the young talented athlete who is predicted to be the next LeBron James in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This young athlete provides evidence of striving for perfection in this single sport when reviewing his daily schedule versus that of his siblings. He says, “The other kids go home and sleep. I come back to the gym” (Thompson, 2004). He is obviously putting forth a lot of effort in his sport to become successful at an early age.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How does a coach become successful? I aim to answer all of these questions and more in my paper.
The attribution theory is essential to coaching and understanding our athletes and their motivations. Throughout sports and competitive activities, individuals are determining whether the activity they are doing is a success or a failure. But the real question that needs to be asked is why are they attributing something as a success or a failure. What is guiding them to view something that can be as simple as getting out of bed in the morning as a success or failure? This paper will dive into why the attribution theory is so critical to coaching and how you can use it to guide yourself, your players, and your teams to become as successful as possible.

Talent and skill are oftentimes mistaken and confused in perceptions and conversations. They both relate to the ability of a person to work and perform on a specific task, although the difference between the two is from where the ability originates. Many believe that people are born with a certain talent and that only these selected individuals will be successful. This, however, is not necessarily true, as the concept of talent should be open to different individuals' interpretations. No one is already born a scientist, a dancer or teacher, yet as individuals, we can develop certain skills to fit in different categories. While talent is an undoubted advantage for success in the people holding it, it is not fundamental to be considered flourishing in certain settings. Skills require determination and effort, and being at the disposal of all, can be the winning key to favorable outcomes in life.
Millions of sports fans anxiously anticipate tuning in to view their favorite sporting events each season. Whether it 's the Super Bowl, NBA Championship, or The World Series, fans are treated to a performance by some of the most talented athletes in the world. These athletes have trained vigorously in order to make their dream of playing in their major sports championship a reality. Many of these athletes began developing their skills by playing competitive sports at a young age. In addition to gaining extraordinary skills, these children and others who participate in competitive sports acquire knowledge that is beneficial to everyday life. My knowledge and experiences with competitive sports began at the age of five. Through my exposer with competitive sports, I gained good communication skills, self esteem, and learned the value of work ethics.
