Sociology is the study of the functioning of the human society, but most people relate it to social work. A social worker is someone who just sits behind a desk, talking about welfare,or helping fostered children find a home. In reality it is so much more, it is helping those in need, those without a voice and those who cannot fight for themselves. Sociology does not have to be for those who want to be a social worker. People in careers such as politics, teaching, and counseling, are known to use certain skills that some for studying sociology. The most interesting job that can or could use sociology is Child Protective Services, counseling and detective work. Child Protective Services (CPS) get children out of unsafe environments by investigating their housing situations and their education. CPS know the signs of a child who is in trouble in their home. Most signs are obvious, while other can be difficult. They need to have the necessary skills to be a great CPS personnel such as being attentive to see the signs that a regular person cannot see and being able to see through a child’s eyes. This makes it easier to pick the truth from the lie, to find better lifestyle for the child. Problem solving may be …show more content…
Every home should have the necessary things for a child such as running water, food, and lights. Working in the as a CPS personnel means being able to overcome the emotion of sympathy and do what is best for the children. Many may think the CPS are heartless and cruel to pull a child away from their caring parents. What they do not see is they do everything in order for that child to be successful for the long run. If and when their parents become capable to care for the child, CPS can try and help the children find their way back to the parents. This does not happen often but it is
...are struggling in. They should also keep reports and do some research before placing children in different homes. Failing to follow the service policy can put a child into a lot of danger because you can’t give a child to a person who isn’t supportive at all. Their job is to protect and support families with the issues that they are facing in their everyday lives.
People use to think sociology is something theoretically and cannot put it into practice. The blog of “ Doing Sociology” by peter Kaufman show we what a sociology majors can pursue, and how to apply sociology into our daily lives. In fact, there are a lot of departments and career resources that need sociologist. To make sociology less abstract, we need to be able to apply sociology into our everyday lives. Kaufman’s model of “doing sociology” has four point that will help we adopt sociology to our lives. The four points are:
and agencies designed to meet the physical, intellectual, and social-emotional needs of individuals and families.” . As a Child Protective worker, my responsibilities are to assess safety (immediate),risk (future harm), abuse and maltreatment, make a
The organization’s culture places an emphasis on a family centered framework that believes in eight principles. The first principle is that all children should be able to grow up in a safe and stable home. Secondly, it is implied most parents want to keep their children safe but some parents need to build on their family strengths. Thirdly, all families are different in culture, race and values. Fourth and fifth, when families are involved in CPS, CPS is responsible for finding permanency for the children and family engagement is more likely to occur if the family is involved in the process. Sixth, if parents are not able to protect their children from harm, CPS has the obligation to intervene for the child’s well-being. Next, if children have to be removed from their home, CPS should create and work on a permanency plan. Lastly, the permanency plan should be achieved as soon as possible (US Dept of Health and Human Services, 2013).
Children’s Social Care work with parents and other agencies to assess the stages of child protection procedures, record information and make decisions on taking further action. The police work closely with this agency to act on decisions made such as removing a child or the person responsible for the abuse while gathering evidence and carrying out investigations regarding the matter. Health professionals have a duty to report suspected non-accidental injuries to Children’s Social Care and examine children to give evidence of abuse. The Children Act 2004 requires every local area to have a Local Safeguarding Children Board to oversee the work of agencies involved in child protection, place policies and procedures for people who work with children and conduct serious case reviews when children die as a result of abuse. The NSPCC is the only charitable organisation that has the statutory power to take action when children are at risk of abuse. They provide services to support families and children and two helplines for children in danger and adults who are concerned for a child’s safety. They also raise awareness of abuse, share their expertise with other professionals and work to influence the law and social policy protect children more efficiently. There are also acts in place to protect children such as the Children Act 1989, the United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child 1989, the Education Act 2002 and the Children Act 2004. Legal framework from such acts are provided for Every Child Matters which requires early years practitioners to demonstrate that they provide activities that help children protect themselves. This may be through books and group talks known as “Stranger
It is the CPS duty to protect the child from harm and the caregiver’s duty to report harm (Martin, 2010). While it seems that Martin (2010) feels that substandard care in a child’s home is connected to community and poverty. I feel that they place a part in sexual abuse, but is not the whole picture. There are some underlying mental issues that causes a grown person to want to hurt a child. I will also say that maybe some abuse in the abuser’s life created this problem. I think that whatever the underlying cause is the vulnerability of children helps create this type of abuse. The quiet, fearful child, in my opinion can be easily manipulated of
Investigates and prevent in cases of a child abuse or neglect. They respond to complaints from law enforcement, day care, schools, etc. They work with parents and other social service agencies to keep the child away from harm and hurt. You need to be able to communicate effectivly with the child and their parent to be able to handle hard situations, and take the time out to investigate the home, inspect the living conditions, and sometimes having to remove the child from the situation at hand. This all may involve counseling and educating parents, and help come up with plans so that the child can live a better life. In order to do that you may need to continue to monitor the situation until it is resolved. If that doesn’t work the CPS workers may remove the abused child/children from
Finally, Children Protective Services has let down many children and families. Children who are in the homes of loving, nurturing parents are take away from their secure environments, and are placed into degrading situations. The children who are in desperate need of help do not receive it. Many of the real cases of abuse go unnoticed and unfounded. The system need to distinguish the difference between real child abuse and parenting because there is a child out there who does need help but the workers are too busy focusing their time on cases that are not necessary. If CPS would create a new sstructure and set new standards, many more lives could be saved.
Child welfare system can provide resources such as child care services for single parents who lack education, which limits their employment. Such services can help the family become financially stable, and hopefully get out of living in poverty. Most services provided to families by the child welfare system have really complicated requirements that make it nearly impossible for them to receive all the necessary resources. For example, the child welfare system currently provides the family with a packet of resources, in which the family on their own must contact agency after agency for services, just to be notified that there are fees to receive services or there are long waiting lists. For the most part, families are then discouraged from asking for further assistance. The child welfare system needs to be able to address the underlying issues that disadvantaged families are dealing with, which may be playing a role in the child
This ensures that the practitioner takes necessary steps to protect a child and also promote their welfare. A practitioner will also need to promote good health of children and take appropriate action to prevent the spread of infection when a child is ill. Within the setting practitioners must work effectively to ensure that they manage the children’s behaviour effectively which is relevant to their age and stage of development.
Cory works for Child Protection services on Broad Street in Regina, he also grew up in Regina. His role at CPS is a child protection officer; he works directly with children and is given casework for each child. When a child enters CPS, he is first assessed by a child protection intake officer who makes the decision if CPs should involve them, and if they are going to involve themselves, does it need to be done within 24 hours or within 5 days? It’s based on the severity of the situation on which the child is in. Cory’s job entails casework of children and everything that goes on in the child’s life, such as the parent’s jobs, incomes, the child’s activities, counselling appointments and manage other challenges the child may be facing as they arise. All children in Saskatchewan are mandated by CPS until the age of 16, so Cory deals will all ages of children. The main priority in CPS is child safety, and if the child is safe in the environment they are in. After CPS has been contacted and the intake officers make the decision to intervene immediately or in 5 days, if CPS decides not to intervene, sometimes they can call mobile crisis but other times, they have no resources left to use.
First of all I would like to explain why the child observation is important for social workers. It is important because it focus on the problems that arise when a child‘s situation is not taken seriously and consequently have harsh consequences for both worker and child (Climbié Report, 2002). Observation is something that leads to formation of hypotheses and gives new insights about the child’s world. Child observations assist social workers understand, through assessments, the children’s communication between them and their carer or parents. The aim of the observation is to understand the child and his/her world (Briggs, 1992).
