Paper: How Important is Social Class to A Person’s Success in Life
Social class is an old fashioned way for people to distinguish each other which most people believe the person who stays in upper class will be successful in his/her life. According to the article “Shadowy Lines That Still Divide” by Janny Scott and David Leonhardt, the authors state, 71 percents of people believe they reach the American dream in their lives (8). This sentence illustrates most upper class are satisfy what they have. In the minds of most of majorities, a successful person means wealth and high education while the upper class represents wealth and it can provide opportunity for children to get high education. Thus, the social class is important to a person’s success in life because as you born in upper class which means you are halfway reach to success .
Most of American meritocracies come from upper class, since they are intelligentsia. Upper class enjoys the best resources such as education. According to the statistic, 65 percent of upper class spend enough time with their family (Scott & Leonhard 8). According to the article, “Classes are groups of people of similar economic and social position; people who, for that reason, may share political attitudes, lifestyles consumption patterns, culture interests, and opportunities to get ahead”(Scott & Leonhardt 4-5). Upper class gets in touch more wide and various world that cause them develop in every aspects. According to the graph, 77 percents of people believe that upper class have too much power(Scott & Leonhardt 8). The more power you have, the more opportunities you get. Even those in the so called working class have to make continuous sacrifices and live very differently from those positioned firmly in the middle class. Some people may have decent jobs but the bills and other expenses people may have make it harder on people than those who are in the same class but don’t have to necessarily go through the same thing as others.
