The Importance of Sharing Cultural Knowledge
Understanding academic-level texts requires a certain level of cultural literacy. If a group of people were to read one article about cats and one about the quantum entanglement theory, it is quite clear as to which article would be better comprehended among the group. Ignorance of a particular subject will inevitably lead to confusion and misunderstanding among readers. Best-selling author and educator E.D. Hirsch, Jr. believes that a shared cultural knowledge is crucial to be able to understand advanced, academic-level texts. However, creating this common culture vocabulary will undoubtedly be a challenge. Although it may be impossible for older generations to suddenly gain all the necessary knowledge about the hundreds of cultures in the world, it is certainly not too late for future generations to start developing immense cultural knowledge. It is imperative that schools begin teaching more diverse curriculum in order for students to become culturally literate on an array of topics. Different cultures have different beliefs, and different beliefs lead to disagreements. These disagreements are better known as culture wars. One of the major causes of culture wars is that some people are completely ignorant of other cultures’ beliefs and morals, so they are quick to assume that everything another culture believes is wrong. If people are more exposed to other cultures they could learn to appreciate and respect them, rather than judge them for being dissimilar. By starting to teach children in school about the diversity of the world, a nationwide, shared cultural knowledge will gradually develop. Dream of a world that has only one culture. Since there is only one culture, nothing is different. This would be a splendid way to live life. There would be no issues between people of different cultures. Everyone has their own point of view for things, so it is natural that one race’s views might clash with another’s. All cultures have their own special rituals that might interrupt or annoy people of another culture. My culture shares many similarities with others around the world; most of which have connected more people in recent years than ever before. Cultural gaps, and lack of understanding for peoples’ values and beliefs are significant reasons why cultures fail to understand one another.
The cultural diversity in society, which is reflected in schools, is forcing schools not to solely rely on content-centered curriculum, but to also incorporate student-centered lesson plans based on critique and inquiry. This requires multicultural education to a dominant part of the school system, not just an extra course or unit. Further, it demands that learning itself no longer be seen as obtaining knowledge but rather, education be seen as creating knowledge. Multicultural education should be seen as affirming the diversity of students and communities, promoting the multicultural ideas of the United States, and building the knowledge and behaviors needed for students to be a positive and contributing member of society and the global community as a whole.
Living in a diverse world should be something a person should be proud of. Getting to know a person’s culture and their beliefs should be a wonderful ability. Respecting one another is important, even though a lot of people still disregard that, which should discontinue. We should all start to learn how to make this world a better place,
There are many factors that play a role in the learning process for every human being. Race, religion, language, socioeconomics, gender, family structure, and disabilities can all affect the ways in which we learn. Educators must take special measures in the delivery of classroom instruction to celebrate the learning and cultural differences of each of their students. As communities and schools continue to grow in diversity, teachers are searching for effective educational programs to accommodate the various learning styles of each student while promoting acceptance of cultural differences throughout the classroom. It no longer suffices to plan educational experiences only for middle-or upper class white learners and then expect students of other social classes and cultures to change perspectives on motivation and competition, learning styles, and attitudes and values that their homes and families have instilled in them (Manning & Baruth, 2009).
