Self-determination is an incredibly important element of success. The concept of self-determination embodies an individual's actions in order to successfully achieve economic, social, and personal growth. Self-determination is seen in an individual’s vision, passion, actions, and discipline. Self-determination is a crucial skill to obtain, especially needed to successfully overcome periods of change such as transitioning into adulthood: moving from highschool to college or graduating from college and starting to work. Self-determination is an absolutely crucial skill everyone should understanfd and learn to master.

However, how does someone become self-determined? The development of self-determination is achieved in a supportive social environment. Self-determination is taught by promoting self-advocacy, self-worth, self-confidence, independence, and autonomy. A proper education from teachers and guidance from family members is crucial to someone developing self-determination. At school, you start to be independent and you learn and apply problem solving skills. You also learn to deal with stress. The degree of independence, problems, and stress increase as you transition into college and further into work. In college, one is able to build supportive relationships with teachers and peers, further increasing their self-determination. Moreover, “parental involvement facilitates children's motivation to achieve, internalization of values, and students' academic self-regulation” (Hui and Tsang). Adolescents who are self-determined, experience positive academic outcomes. For example, students who were self-determined received better grades, expressed a higher level of creativity, and showed better learning habits (Hui and Tsang). Also, “higher autonomy in schools is associated with lower dropout rates, lower level of anxiety, more positive coping strategies. Students whose environments are supportive of their needs have a greater tendency to engage in learning” (Hui and Tsang). Self-determination also has positive psychological effects. Higher level of determination are seen in a more positive mental state. High levels of self-determination reflect greater self-control and a substantially greater level of self esteem. On the other hand, lower levels of self-determination leads to depression, anxiety, and procrastination (Nota, Soresi, Ferrari, and Wehmeyer). As stated before, self-determination is a crucial skill to have when transitioning into adulthood. Being self-governed, making choices based on goals and interests, as well as planning according are all task that require self-determination and are pivotal in order to have a positive transition.
