Introduction
Originating from the Arabic language the word salat has various meanings such as connection, prayer, and invocation. However, Salat mostly refers to the five obligatory prayers performed by Muslims during specific times of the day which are: pre-dawn (fajr), noon (dhuhr), mid-afternoon (‘asr), sunset (maghrib), and early night or evening (‘Isha). Salat is the second pillar of Islam and the second most important act after the declaration of faith (shahada) where Muslims bear witness that there is no deity that is worthy to be worshipped except Allah and that Muhammad is the servant and the messenger of Allah. Five times a day millions of Muslims pray facing towards the direction (qibla) of the Ka’aba located in Masjid-Al Haram,

Why is it so fundamental for Muslims to pray five times a day? In a religious context, the word Islam means ‘submission’ to the will of Allah or God and the Muslim is the one who submits and humbles himself in front of his Lord. The Qur’an revealed that God “…did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship [him]” (51:56) (Ali). If the purpose of life is to worship Allah then there must be a way for them to express their humility and acceptance of God’s commands. Salat is how Muslims show both their physical and spiritual submission to Allah. Just like the other acts of worship such as Sawm (Fasting), Hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah), and Zakat (alms-giving), the goal of Salat is to bring the Muslims closer to Allah and also build the character of members of Islamic community. This investigation focuses on the early origins of Salat, the role it plays in Islam, and its significance both in this life and the hereafter using as evidence the Holy book of Islam and the sunnah of Prophet …show more content…
Origins of Salat
The most significant misconception about the origin of salat is that it was established and first introduced by Prophet Muhammad. However, it is believed that the emergence of Salat dates back to the time of previous prophets such as Ibrahim and Isma’il . One commonality between all the messengers and prophets of Islam is that they were all sent by Allah to restore Tawheed in the heart of people, make them submit to Allah, and establish regular prayer. It was Prophet Ibrahim who established the concept of salat and gave this religion the name of Islam. This is proven in the Qur’an when Allah says: “…it is the cult of your father Abraham. It is He Who has named you Muslims, both before and in this (Revelation); that the Messenger may be a witness for you, and ye be witnesses for mankind! So establish regular Prayer, give regular Charity, and hold fast to Allah!” (22:78) (Ali)
All prophets and messengers, from Adam to Muhammad, conveyed the same message which was to worship Allah only through salat. Prophet Ibrahim used to pray regularly and invoked his Lord to make his descendants establish salat as it’s stated in the Qur’an:
O my Lord! Make me one who establishes regular Prayer, and also (raise such) among my offspring O our Lord! And accept Thou my Prayer. (14:40)
Coming close to God through prayer soon became very important because everyone feared his wrath. It was said:
Salat, as mentioned earlier, is the performance of prayer five times a day. The prayer, which includes full prostration, is performed facing Mecca. In the The Meaning of the Glorious Koran, (the earliest source of Islamic writing as dictated to Mohammed), it is written, “Whencesoever thou comest forth (for prayer, O Mohammed) turn thy face toward the Inviolable Place of Worship. Lo! it is the Truth from thy Lord. Allah is not unaware of what ye do (Surah 2:149).” Implicit directions for prayer also display the amount of emphasis on practice. Salat must be performed five times daily, at specific times of the day: early morning, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and evening. Each Friday a congregational service is held at the mosque and every male is required to attend. Before prayer, four ritual aspects are required: ritual purification, proper covering of the body, proper intention, and facing Mecca, or qibla (1).
In the investigation of Islam, the five pillars of Islam provide a glimpse of the life and obligations of the Muslim. The main pillars include confession, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and pilgrimage. This essay will provide a brief overview of the pillars, how prayer is lived out in an individual Muslims life, and how Christians assimilate to Muslim culture in Saudi Arabia.
The religion of Islam dates back to the 7th century CE and the life of its founder, Muhammad of Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. Islam is an Arabic word meaning: making something safe and secure, making something sound and whole, entering into peace and tranquility, and surrendering to something other than oneself. A follower of Islam is called a Muslim. In the religion of Islam, it requires the belief in certain core tenets, which include the articles of faith and the five pillars of worship. These two combined, form the Islamic creed.
Islam and the worship of Allah (god) began with Muhammad and his revelations that lasted for 23 years of his life from (610 C.E.- 623 C.E.). In the Islamic religion it is believed that he was the last prophet sent by Allah (god) and this made all his teachings into to Law and are looked at as the will of God. These messages were given to him through the archangel Gabriel, in a kind of continuation to the Jewish Torah and Christian Bible, which the Qur’an shares some similarities or past “history” with them such as the belief in Abraham and Jesus as a prophet, but in the eye’s of Mohammad the Jews and Christians had fallen astray from the real teaching of god.
Both Islam and Christianity have practices or duties, which are central to the daily routines of life. The five pillars of Islam are the foundation of the way Muslims live. The first pillar of Islam is the Shahadah, the Declaration of Faith. This says; ‘There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’. The second pillar is salah, which says that Muslims should pray five times a day. This applies to all Muslims, except Shi’is are permitted to combine the five prayers into three sessions. The third pillar is zakah, which means giving money to people who are poor or in need. The fourth pillar is sawm, which means fasting. Every year, during the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast during hours of daylight. The fifth pillar is Hajj. This is the pilgrimage to Mekkah, which
Islam is the second biggest religion in the world. Islam has spread from Saudi Arabia to across the globe. Islam formed when the prophet muhammed went to Mt. Hira to pray then Allah(God in arabic) spoke to him and based the whole religion off the five pillars. The 5 pillars are Shahadah which means Profession of faith, Salat daily prayers, Sawm which means fasting, Zakat which is almsgiving, and finally Hajj and it means to pilgrimage. Islam started in the city of Mecca, and the holy book of Islam is the Qur’an.
In addition to the many different ways the followers of Islam spread the religion and expanded their empire, the religion itself was appealing to many people outside of Arabia. The Islamic religion contained many beliefs and practices that were extremely appealing to others. One of these beliefs was that Islam is an uncompromising monotheistic religion, meaning there is only one God. In addition, there was an extremely well and highly developed set of legal codes and a strong sense of community among the followers of Islam. The five pillars were also extremely appealing because they provided the basis for religious unity. The humbleness and prayerfulness of the Islamic people was admirable to those of other faiths.
In all countries throughout the world the sources of Islamic traditions are found in the Qur’an. Similar to the Bible the Qur’an has different chapters to refer to in the holy book; the chapters in the Qur’an are called Surah’s. In the Muslim religion there are 114 Surah’s in the Qur’an that the followers of Islam hold true to their beliefs. According to Charles Shields, a Muslim and Islam follower, the most important Surah of the Qur’an is Al-Fatihah. “ In the name of Allah the most gracious the most merciful. All the praises and thanks are to Allah, the lord of the mankind, Jinn and all that exist. The most gracious the most merciful. The only owner and the only ruling judge on the day of resurrection. You alone we worship, and you alone we ask for help for everything. Guide us to the straight way. The way of those on whom you have bestowed your grace, not the way of those who earn your angry (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as Christians)” (Al-Fatihah, ayat 1-7). In all countries that practice Islam it is essential that when a Muslim makes prayer (Salat) they have to perform Surah Al-Fatihah, if they do not perform that Surah than their prayer (Salat) is invalid to Allah. This belief is not an opinio...
The second of the five pillars is Salat. This is the name for the mandatory prayers which are to be performed five times a day. The prayer is a direct link between the worshipper and God. The prayers contain versus from the Qu’ran but the personal supplication may be said in one’s own language. These prayers are said at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and nightfall.
Each Muslim above the age of puberty is commanded to pray five times a day. Muslims pray five times a day facing the Qibla which means facing Makkah the house of Allah. Prayer is a very important action in all of us as Christians. We should know why we pray and why it is important. We should also know that prayer cant just come from our mouths but from our hearts as well. Our affections cling to self and to worldly objectives; our prayer cannot rise above their level no matter what words we use. In Luke 11:1 it says “ Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” we should be taught to pray either from the church or from the people around us. Taught in a sense of listening, not actually taking lessons on it. We need to pray because prayer is the most important part of the thank...
