Hard classes. New people. Clubs and organizations. School spirit. Greek life. Tiny dorm rooms. This is college. It is a place where many great things and many bad things can happen. Though you shouldn’t be scared. Life happens in ways you would never expect. While in college, everyone tells you to get as much out of it that you can and that these four years (well hopefully four years) will challenge and change you for the better. However, before you start, there’s a few things you should know. These things will help you start your journey through something as crazy and cool as college.
When I was in your position, I had the same questions and doubts that you have now. For a while, I just lived with those and told myself there was nothing I

You cannot just walk in and breeze through it. There will be many roadblocks along the way and you are going to have to actively work through them. When dealing with a roadblock, you must first ask yourself what is the roadblock in particular and how it started. You need to use this information to help determine what to do about the problem and how it will affect me in the long run. If you cannot figure out a solution to your roadblock on your own, your professors and other individuals on campus are here to help you and talk to you about it. A common roadblock for students and especially freshman is doubt about your major or career choice. They may be afraid that what they want to do in life won’t make them any money or that what they want to do now will bore them to death in ten years. I personally have struggled through this dilemma and would like to briefly share it with you. When I came into college, I knew exactly what I wanted to do and no hard class or judgmental person was going to stop me. I was completely confident in being a surgeon. However, when my grades started to drop and self-doubt started to kick in, I wondered if this was right for me. This roadblock made me want to give up even though school had just started. However, I didn’t give up and I put a lot of thought into it. I decided to keep trying with my dreams of being doctor because it is truly important to me. Every one of you incoming freshman will …show more content…
I have heard so many stories of people forgetting their high school friends or going weeks without contacting their families. This is absurd to me because these people are central to my life in college. Luckily my best friend from high school is also going to Georgia Southern, so keeping up with him is not hard. However, if he did not go here, I would still stay in contact because the people in my past remind me of how far I have come. My family’s role in my life is a constant reminder that I have people who will always love and support me. They tell me I can be who I want to be if I just keep trying. Keeping in touch with these people severally boost your confidence and well-being in school. They will stick by your side and push you to be the best you can
Colombo explains that “Beginning college can be disconcerting experience” (Colombo, p.1). That there will be more peer pressure from your peers and an increase expectations that you have never faced during your high school days. “In the dorms you may find yourself among people whose backgrounds make them seem foreign and unapproachable” (Colombo, p.1). Colombo also states “If you commute, you may be struggling against a feeling of isolation that you’ve never faced before” (Colombo, p. 1).
College is around the corner and that means everyone should have their mind set out on which college they want to go to and what major they are interested in. However, they do not necessarily know what they are getting themselves into on how college will really be like. Nor do they know if their academic skills will help them out in the real world. Unfortunately, I am one of those people; not knowing what to expect in the near future and unaware if I am ready to handle myself out in the real world. However, I want to change that and transition my mind from not having a single clue to being prepared on tackling obstacles over the years.
Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.
I currently attend Tennessee State University as a freshman. I plan on majoring in Dental Hygiene. I am the first to graduate and attend college in my family so of course everybody has high expectations from me. My mom and dad sacrificed a lot for me to attend school and get a good education and they taught me that without education you really can’t do much with your life. I want to have a good career and a good degree so I can be successful in life. I want to make my parents happy and very proud of the young lady they have raised. My father’s dream has always been for me to major in Dental Hygiene because of how successful I can be. And my dream has always been to make my dad (my inspiration and my role model) happy. When I started off trying to decide my major I had a very hard time because I honestly didn’t know what I wanted to do. I didn’t want to choose a major that I couldn’t really do much with or find a good job with. I asked my dad for help and he told me that this major would fit me perfectly and we looked up more information about it and we looked up the salary for it too and that’s when I knew I had found my major.
When any adolescent enters High School they are still young and on the search to find themselves. High Schooler’s often make bad decisions, but quickly see that these mistakes there to be learning experiences rather than to dwell on them. Often, for many students, High School does not present an extreme amount of stress, rather it is a a place to learn more about yourself. Once college hits, stress is the only thing on the mind. College students are always worrying about if they did their homework, if they have a big test coming up, if they studied enough, and if they even have enough money to pay their bills. So the key to college is to know that the fundamentals of college are different than high school, be responsible and reliable to yourself, do all your homework, and most importantly be respectful to your peers and teachers
There are many similarities, and differences betweeen high school and college. High School was the best four years of my life. I got in alot of trouble in thoses years, but also had a blast. Now at J.C.C. it is even better than high school, and my eyes are being opened to a whole new world. In Toronto High School you can get away with just about anything. Jefferson Community College is a whole different story. High school begins at eight o'clock, and ends around three. You go to the same seven or eight classes every day. You also see the same people you have grown up with since you were little. You have football season, school dances, after school activities, clubs, boys, plays, and a ton of homework. Also sitting through assemblies, dress codes, and who could forget getting sent to the office for misbehaving.College is a whole new step. You go away to an environment all new to you. You have to leave your friends, and set out to make new relationships to last a lifetime. It is an emotional step alot of kids are not ready for. You no longer have mom and dad to be at your side to help you through your every problem. You now have to become responsible and rely on yourself, and your new friends. You are introduced to new things such as parties, alcohol, drugs, and sex. You also can decide to take the step of joining the Greek Club and pledging to a sorority or fraternity. Your classes in college are based around whatever you are majoring in so you only...
As a new freshman entering this Community College, you will be discovering and experiencing many new things about the world in which you live and yourself. The jump from high school to college can be a very scary but exciting experience. I have some valuable advice for you on how to make this transition smoother and an enjoyable experience rather than a scary and lonely one.
College is hard, scary, and stressful especially with children involved. I think it is a good thing I went to college when I did otherwise, I would be stuck in the same minimum wage job that I have had for the past year. It is going to be hard and stressful but the truth is that were all scared. It is just a matter of pushing myself into getting where I want to be. My main fear with college is mainly flunking out, it is scary but, it is also achievable. I thought to myself, “Hey, if my best friend can go to college then why I can I not”. There was three things that pushed me into going to college. Those are: getting a better job so I can spoil my children, continuing my education, and to be a role model for my children.
College is a life altering experience. It is a place where you leave anything and everything you have ever known, to come to a place where nothing is familiar. The summer before your freshman year of college can be a nerve racking experience. You anxiously wait for the day when the mailman will bring you that envelope that holds your fate. Enclosed in this envelope is the name of your roommate. Your roommate can have the biggest influence on your freshmen year. They can turn into your best friend or your worst enemy. You anticipate the day when you actually get to meet the person you will be living with for the whole year. At Penn State there are no guarantees that you will have anything in common with your roommate at all, and that is a scary thing.
To think that my first semester of college will be over this friday makes me realize how fast time flies. The first few weeks of college were tough, tiring and full of anxiety. Being in a new environment, a different state and not knowing one single person was something that I did not prepare myself for. Throughout all of the tears and the frustrations, I had to constantly remind myself that I am at The University of Akron to gain an education and become a successful individual.
Through these fun and challenging times each one of us has built strong relationships. Whether it was with friends or a teacher, we have developed connections and memories that will be with us forever, even if we lose contact with those individuals. Some students have discovered they have a passion for writing through a creative writing class or want to have a career in business from taking Mr. Ide’s inspirational marketing classes. Others have participated in CLIP or summer school to catch up and make it possible for them to be here today. I went to Heights Elementary and have spent the last 12 years with the same group of people. Attending school with the people I’ve known since elementary and middle school, and making homecoming posters with them for four years in a row, has given me a chance to get to know the people around me better than I ever thought I would.
As underclassmen you come into high school either thinking that the next four years of your schooling will be really easy or really stressful. To tell the truth it can be both, weather you come into high school with a positive or negative attitude. High school is the last place you can get away with some mistakes and try again. The next four years will test your skills and responsibilities. You can learn a lot about yourself in high school, from how you use your time in school to your after school activities you do. What you do from a freshman to a senior will determine what you want and can do for future careers. High school will challenge you in many ways from organization skills to time management skills.
Going to college will be the best time of people’s lives, but getting into college just might be the worst. These topics being discussed are good to talk about for upcoming college kids to help them get through this troubling time and inform them that they have options. Getting into college is so difficult due to the high costs of tuition, selectiveness of the college, and also just finding the best fit college for incoming freshmen.
I can relate to Melanie’s first impression of college being unfamiliar, scary and life changing in college fear factor. When I started my first semester it was a lot different than what I was used to going from a one on one studying experience back to a class room full of students. Melanie states, “Individuals well outside the ‘traditional’ college age range also spoke of the stress of assuming the responsibilities of college” (24). Melanie’s point is that students of all ages experience some anxiety when first attending
Those who value both their family and friendship relationships enjoy greater health and higher happiness. While no one should solely rely on friendships, these do have an impact on a person's well-being. This gives a better understanding and allows a person to thrive both physically and mentally. Just as with family relationships, having good friends can enhance the ability to cope with stress and learn how to grow as a person. College is a time for change. For most people it is a time when they find their way and become more independent. They will seek out new things, make mistakes, and learn how to manage time and energy. When life becomes stressful it will cause the need to rely on friends that are going through the same thing. When meeting back up with old friends, they may seem more mature or completely different. The way college changes friendships will be different for everyone. No two friendships are alike, so separation of going to college will affect everyone differently. Some friends will stay close so there will not be many changes and they will probably still text every day. While others will drift apart and might not even talk at all. College students will make new friends, maybe a new roommate, people in their classes, or in the cafe. There are a lot of opportunities to meet new people. Even with old friends in college, those friendships might change and meeting new people will cause one to grow
