In other words, reading helps to mould a person's character. It is well known that books can be a stimulating agent for building oneself. In this fast growing world and the era of competition, book reading is the only way to save the tees from teenage problems and for this parents and the teachers have to do combined attempts to develop the reading habits in the teens from very beginning which helps the teens from the dangerous problems which they are facing
Pearson UK (n.d.) stated “Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. In fact, reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.”
For me, reading as well as rereading, books such as Junie B Jones, Berenstain Bears, or the Harry Potter series, impacted my life immensely by increasing my vocabulary, developing my vital language skills and many more developmental skills. In the past, being literate meant beating kids in how many books I could read and being able to comprehend difficult vocabulary, but now being literate in the adult world means developing new and creative ideas or being able to prosper an opinion based on facts and previous knowledge.
Donald M. Murray, in this article entitled “Reading as a Reader” is talking about how reading is an unique, an essential, and a necessary aptitude for human beings in their society. While illustrating his point of view, the author stresses on the idea that our attitudes towards reading is directly linked to the systematic approaches we have while facing a article or a book. In this article, he said that: “If we approach a text believing that we are not readers, or that we can’t read, that attitude may make it more difficult for us to understand the challenging text.”(Murray, 2). Throughout those words, Murray emphasizes that we should consider the process of reading as a learning process, and as a way of deepening the capacity we have as readers. We should have an open-mind while engaging with a reading, and understand that it may always not be our fault if it comes that the text we are reading is difficult. In clear, it is all part of the process of improving ourselves. Then, Murray, in his well structured writing, portrays differents types of reading and also gives us some tips on how to approach them.
The type of reading that is on the decline, is that which requires thought, the assimilation and accommodation of ideas, and effort—close reading. This form of reading involves the careful, sustained interpretation of literary text that comes from observing a pieces minute detail. In accordance with the definition of reading provided by the Princeton dictionary, “the cognitive process of understanding a written linguistic message”, the methods used other than closed reading are not truly reading. Many have argued that the creation of new technology has actually enabled more people to read, but when compared with reading’s definition, this is not true. Reading in not mindlessly skimming articles and not knowing what they mean afterwards, but being able to comprehend the material that one has read, including its many facets.
When children are taught to read at an earlier age, their emotional and mental development is positively impacted. The exposure of literature to young children helps them become smarter and allows them to understand more about the world. They learn simple yet valuable lessons that allow them to make wiser decisions and display better behavior around others. Psychologist Raymond Mar held a study in 2010 on children who read books when they are younger. Mar’s results showed that reading boosted their “theory of mind” and understanding of people’s feelings. This shows that children can benefit when properly taught to read books at a younger age. It also aids children in school and increases their intellectual engagement. Kids can develop the skills to question the emotional and mental aspects of books when they start reading at a younger age. Parents will benefit from reading also, it creates a bond with their child that last a lifetime. Reading aloud will introduce children to books and reading so they can eventually do it on their own. Reading to children can improve many aspects of their life.
Reading has been a part of my life from the second I was born. All throughout my childhood, my parents read to me, and I loved it. I grew up going to the library and being read to constantly. Especially in the years before Kindergarten, reading was my favorite thing to do. I grew up loving fairy tales and thriving on the knowledge that I could have any book I wanted, to be read to me that night. Having no siblings, my only examples were my parents, and they read constantly. Without a family that supported my love of reading throughout my childhood, I wouldn’t appreciate it nearly as much as I have and do now.
There are many articles on reading and strategies for teaching reading and reading skills to younger students, while at the same time there is a strong need for this information for adults and those who are in or entering college. In their academic article, Reading and Learning Strategies: Recommendations for the 21st Century, the authors have found that there are several models that will assist this group. The first would be to choose program models that emphasize cognitive development on the part of the learner, while emphasizing their strengths. The next of these models would be to emphasize the transfer and modification of skills across all the academic disciplines. Another model, and one of the most important is to emphasize the students flexible use of any processes that may be used in a strategy.
Before describing the problem, I would like to mention the advantages of reading because if people realize the benefits of reading one book in a month, they begin to develop reading habits. First of all, reading is good for both human psychology and physiology. Psychologist Dr. Kalyoncu and neurologist Dr. Ovak states that reading increases the brain blood flow in addition to speeding up the brain’s metabolism and the electrical activity (64). They also point out that reading delays ageing and diseases such as Alzheimer, which stems from ageing as well. Other major advantages of reading are that our vocabulary gets richer; also we could learn different cultures, different lives and different perceptions by reading. A noted Professor AC Grayling says in a review of A History of Reading, “To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries.” Yes, that’s right. We go on a journey without paying lots of money and carrying heavy suitcases, and we can go wherever we want simply by turning the pages of the book. Furthermore; we could become a knowledgeable and sophisticated person who could talk articulately and think creatively. Despite of all these benefits, reading culture in Turkey still hasn’t settled. Good reading skills are very important in learning languages. Reading improves spelling because as students learn to sound out letters and words, spelling comes easier. It helps to expand the vocabulary, since the best way to acquire a large vocabulary is to read. Students learn new words as they read and put them in their mind for later use. . They also unconsciously absorb the information about things like how to structure the sentences, how words are used in different contexts, and it gives a better understanding of the word usage and definitions than the cold facts of a dictionary. It improves a person’s vocabulary and knowledge without the person even knowing it. Even if students do not understand every word, they will hear new sounds, words and phrases which they can then try out, copying what they have heard. They can comprehend ideas, follow arguments and detect implications. Reading texts also provide good models for English writing. Krashen (2004) found that reading is extremely important in learning English, since it is the only way to “become a good reader, develop a good writing style, an adequate vocabulary, advanced grammar” and the only way to “become a good speller”.
One positive element of reading is that it gives children the opportunity to develop their thoughts on books, which strengthens their cognitive development and encourages deeper thoughts.
