Goals are important for every individual to have in their life. Goals help people get to places in their life and typically, positively impact their life. As an early childhood education major, it is beneficial for me to have professional goals. These goals will impact my own life and the lives of my future students and their families. Every early childhood professional should have their own goals. They can have their own personal goals, but they should also have goals that pertain to their profession. These goals are important to have because often it will relate to advance their knowledge in the field or contributing in a positive way. Goals help people improve who they are and what they do. My goal of working with children is more general right now because I don’t want to be picky about where I end up. I don’t to decide right now that I would never work somewhere and then possibly end up missing out on a great opportunity to be involved with children and their families. Another goal of mine is to be able to positively impact those children that I will be working with. I most likely will be around those children for a majority of the day, so I want to be able to always be there for them. I want to be able to remember that they are most than scores and tests. My goal is to help them become better people and grow into great citizens. Another goal of mine is to help educate their parents too. I want to help their parents become aware of the resources that are available for them. Setting goals for yourself creates an individual growth. In the article, “Why we are looking at the ‘value’ of college all wrong” by Valerie Strauss, Nelson discusses how an independent learner is able to teach themselves and learn from the challenges they tend to face. “The educated graduate is an independent learner…able to direct his or her own learning in accordance with the challenges that life presents in the circumstances of his or her own life.(Strauss 1)” For example, I want to become Registered Nurse; therefore, I write that down as one of my goals. However, I would then have to write everything else in order to become a Registered Nurse. Having a goal set that I want to become a RN, I now have something to strive at and to motivate myself to reach that goal. Therefore, creating goals helps establish what direction I am trying to go in, and also allows me to figure out how to solve a problem. Another example is if I failed a test, I will try to examine the errors within my work; however, I will then create a goal for myself to make sure I do better on test the next time. Finding the errors and creating goals to fix the errors makes me an independent learner. I am taking the charge that I want to do better; therefore, I am going to create a goal to help me succeed. Back in my teenage days, I was once told by my teacher saying that “I believe no one can teach you how to act, but schools do give you an environment to make mistakes, to learn techniques and to learn professionalism”. Looking back at those words really gave me the inspiration to become a professional teacher in the kindergarten to teach, to learn new things, gaining new experiences and knowledge as well as being a professional. Early childhood education is teaching imparted to children of up to about eight years either formally or informally.
