Population health, what is it? The term is exactly what it sounds like, the health (more so health status at outcomes) of the population, whether it be by city, race, or age. Population health works to identify and remedy health determinants that affect different populations. These determinants can be social, economic, physical and individual/biological. The study of population health will then research the different types of health determinants and identify past, current and possible future health outcomes to improve the overall quality of health and healthcare. Population health is a new research area that has just recently started to gain some speed. As a nation, the United States is working towards the triple aim, improving care quality/outcomes, …show more content…
The VHA has seen a rise in veterans who aren’t receiving the appropriate care. This may be due to a number of reasons, some of which being long wait times, distance from care centers (access), or the affordability of care. Working to reform healthcare, the VA needs to implement both short and long-term solutions, thus the implementation of population health. Population health will allow the VHA to identify what health disparities are occurring in different populations by gathering patient information at their visits. By gathering data, both patient information such as BMI and location information, the VHA will be able to start identifying trends and reoccurring issues by analyzing the information. As the VA Case Study points out, population health can be used to identify food disparities, which can then provide insight on why certain populations may have higher obesity …show more content…
As a field, healthcare is currently working to build larger datasets, interoperability and user interfaces. These technologies alone can improve the information and process of gathering datasets. Just thinking back to the case studies completed this semester, even if full interoperability isn’t reached, data mining, federated databases, and data harmonizing allow for researchers to pull information from different sources without compromising the security and privacy of patients. This would require standards, foundational framework, and user participating resulting in uploaded datasets that can then be used for research in different ways. Lastly, the data that has been used for existing studies has been conducted in highly populated areas, not providing much information on rural areas, or areas in which access to healthcare is not as easily available. In order to truly work towards the overall health of our population, underserved populations need to be analyzed so that hopefully through population health objectives they can receive optimal access and
Introduction “Health informatics is the science that underlies the academic investigation and practical application of computing and communications technology to healthcare, health education and biomedical research” (UofV, 2012). This broad area of inquiry incorporates the design and optimization of information systems that support clinical practice, public health and research; understanding and optimizing the way in which biomedical data and information systems are used for decision-making; and using communications and computing technology to better educate healthcare providers, researchers and consumers. Although there are many benefits of bringing in electronic health systems there are glaring issues that associate with these systems. The
Population Health Data Population health data is an important component of the Meaningful Use Program. The program requires healthcare providers to collect and report data on a variety of measures related to population health, such as
Health informatics is best described as the point where information science, medicine, and healthcare all meet. It encompasses the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and the use of information in health and biomedicine. Health informatics incorporates tools such as: computers (hardware and softwar...
Diagnosing and investigating health problems and health hazards in the community. Informing, educating and empowering the people about health issues. Mobilizing community partnerships to identify and solve health problems. Health assessments also develop policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts. They also enforce laws and regulations that help protect health and ensure safety (Thivierge, 2016). Assessments link people to needed personal health services and assure the provision of health care when otherwise unavailable. Public health assessments can help to assure the public of the competency of the public health and personal health care workforce. These assessments evaluate effectiveness, accessibility and quality of personal and population-based health services (Thivierge,
Inside any type of community there are many indicators of health, but now I am going to focus only in five of them. The proper good health of communities it is a very strong matter for governments and society in general. This indicators are important because gives us objectives, data, and resources to guide us in what are the mains community problems when we talk about health. The five indicators that I am going to discuss are: access to health services, physical activities, nutrition and weight status, sexual transmitted diseases, and immunization and infectious diseases. The government program that control and give us all this information is Healthy People 2020.
The United States Department of Health and Human Services created the initiative Healthy People, which uses “science-based benchmarks” (“Healthy People 2020”, 2017) every decade, to set targeted goals. Healthy People’s goals focus on the promotion of society’s health, as well as the prevention of diseases through preventative care and immunizations. By becoming healthier as a society, the cost of healthcare decreases for the nation. Goals are reassessed and analyzed every few years to decipher the nation’s progress towards the set targets, access to healthcare, extending the life expectancy, and decreasing the disparities to zero. Access to care components are health insurance coverage, available services, timeliness, and the effect on
Healthy People are a nationwide program set by the United States Department of Health and Human Services with the objectives to promote health and prevent disease. The Healthy People program was first initiated in 1979, followed by Healthy People 1990, 2000 and 2010 with the same goals and objectives to promote health and prevent diseases. Due to the accomplishments that has been achieved in the previous years under this program, the Healthy People 2020 expanded or rather broadened their goals and objectives beyond disease prevention, health promotion and reducing health disparities, but to also eliminate healthcare disparities that has plagued this nation by the year 2020. The governing body, the United States Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for coordinating this program; track the progress of these objectives so as to improve the health of the population. Among the various goals set by this body, only three will be discussed in this paper to gain more insight as to what it entails. These include health equity to improve the health of all groups; social and physical environments that promote good health; and to promote quality of life, healthy development and healthy behavior across life stages.
This public health issue does not only effect individuals but the national as a whole in regards to the health care system costs. Obesity in children "costs the health care system $14 billion per year, much which comes from public funds" (Glanz, 2008). Also, obesity is expected to cause 112,000 deaths per year in the United States(Gollust, 2014). In addition, many changes seen in the health care sy...

Improving population health necessitates a variety of the contributions from health entities. These health entities can be state, local governments, hospitals, health centers, and community organizations. Unfortunately, these contributions and services are not equally distributed throughout the population. Lack of a supermarket in a neighborhood limits residents’ access to healthy food and other resources. Furthermore, ethnic minority and/or low-income communities are burdened with several health disparities such as greater risk for diseases, or limited access to healthcare services (Jackson, 2014). The National Cancer Institute reported that individuals from medically underserved population are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage diseases because they have inadequate resources to education, or health insurance. When an individual does not have adequate access to healthcare services, healthy disparity grows larger in the overall health of a
To better understand the roles needed to enhance the public health infrastructure; one must first know the purpose of a health informatician. An informatician is a person who studies or work in the field of informatics. According to the American Medical Informatics Association Inc., “Public Health Informatics is the application of informatics in areas of public health, including surveillance, prevention, preparedness, and health promotion. Public health informatics and the related population informatics, work on information and technology issues from the perspective of groups of individuals” (2016). In order to build a solid infrastructure
Health care and research are no longer two different paths, but instead because the emphasis on reducing cost and increasing quality outcomes they are converging to make a LHCS. With the introduction of LHCS’s, research and treatment will converge into a new way of managing patient data. Expansion of technology and increased patient involvement in their health care will continue to create the need to reassess what privacy and confidentiality look like to the patient, researcher, practitioner, health plan and other business
The human right to health means that everyone has the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, which includes access to all medical services, sanitation, adequate food, healthy working conditions, and a clean environment. (“What is the Human Right to Health and Health Care”, n.d.). Health should be a human right and should have access to all people. It will also show that all human beings are treated equally. Many people ask this question is Health a human right? Should people have given access to human right? I believe that health should be a human right because it provides quality of life, encourage equity, provide prevention and awareness and eliminate discrimination among people.
Public Health is the science of preventing disease and promoting health through many different ideas and functions by informing society and different community-based organizations. The idea behind Public Health is to protect and serve; it helps improve the lives of countless individuals through promoting a healthier lifestyle, education, research, prevention, detection, and response management. From the beginning, the idea of Public Health has become a stepping-stone that is essential to the longevity of humans and the environment. As society progresses and new advents are created or modified, Public Health
