This theory was first discovered by Alfred Wegener in 1912, he noticed that the coast lines of the west coast in Africa and the east coast of southern America seem to match up like a jigsaw puzzle. Further in his discoveries and in examining the globe, it revealed that all the earths’ continents had at one time been connected in a supercontinent called Pangaea, which is a Greek word were pan “entire” + Gaia “earth”. The Pangaea started at the South Pole and the earth’s rotation eventually caused it to break up, and this was according to Wegener’s theory. Throughout his research traces of fossil evidence were found in support of his theory, in addition to that he came up with ideas that as to how continental drift worked in the building of the world’s mountain ranges. The Pangaea looks like the diagram below: Most scientists today have a better understanding of the make-up of the Earth's tectonic plates. There are three main driving forces for the movement of the Earth's tectonic plates. They are mantle convection, gravity and the Earth's rotation. The mantle convection involves the large convection currents of molten material in the Earth's upper mantle. Seismic studies show that the mid-oceanic ridges experience an elevated number of earthquakes. All these observations indicate intense geological activity at the mid-oceanic ridges. Periodically, the Earth's magnetic field reverses. New rock formed from magma records the orientation of Earth's magnetic field at the time the magma cools. Study of the sea floor with magnetometers revealed "stripes" of alternating magnetisation parallel to the mid-oceanic ridges.

The traditional theory about the Earth’s core suggest that the core of the Earth is a solid nickel and iron sphere surrounded by a fluid metallic magma. The rotation of the Earth is believed to create massive columns of magma to swirl in the core. These columns are believed to produce the Earth’s magnetic field. This theory is based on the assumption that the Earth’s core is cooling and will eventually cool completely and cease to produce energy and a magnetic field. However, this theory does not answer many ongoing mysteries about the Earth, such as why the Earth’s magnetic field periodically shuts down, and questions about the energy production of the Earth. It was apparent that a new theory was needed to explain the mystery of the Earth’s core.
