I think it is important for each person have a personal set of ethics that they follow. These ethics can be important in the workplace, but can also be important in your own day to day life. I feel the ethical code I follow is relevant to both. I do not feel I would act a way in my work place that I would not act in my personal life, and vice versa. Some of the things that are in my own personal code of ethics is honesty. They say, “honesty is the best policy” and that is something I really believe. I have hired some of my friends for the company I work, and it has put me in a tough position. I feel that it is important for me to be in a position that I have the privilege to do the hiring for my company, but I have learned my lesson. I once hired one of my good friends because after being friends with her for over ten years I knew she had a passion for clinical work, and working with patients. I could hire and train her before I realized the mistake I made. Though she was my friend, and good at what she did she was not a reliable employee. She was constantly late, and was constantly giving excuses for absences. I was faced with a tough decision on what would be the right thing to do. Even though she was my friend it was important to keep my company in mind. If I were to turn the other shoulder on all her issues I would not be treating my other employees fair. I knew she needed to be held to the same standards that everyone else was. I also found it was not fair to my clients if I had an employee that would constantly be late when they are our customers and number our one priority. In the end I was forced to let my friend go even though I feared it would wreck my friendship. In the end, she understood the position I was in, and was apologetic for putting me in the position she had.
