Personal Appearance How do people normally distinguish or evaluate a person who they met for the first time? Most of them have criteria for judging a person with the appearance of the person such as height, weight, figure, looks, etc., and the way of the judgement might depend on the individual decisions. Judging others with the appearance could be wrong decisions for the ethical problems, or the appearance does not always show the real characteristics of a person. Moreover, we even have some artificial operations to become more beautiful or attractive of late. Anyway, if we exclude considering these problems, we can say it is almost impossible to change the physical characteristics except weight, clothing, hair color or style, etc. Nevertheless, …show more content…
The easiest reason to explain the changings is having high status or enough money as one wants. These factors seem more like influencing receivers of impressions; for example, Wearing formal clothes is the simplest way to change the personal evaluation, so people sometimes try to wear better clothes to pretend to be a career or rich as a vanity. People cannot help counting the authority of the person unconsciously when they evaluate the person even if they try to disregard it. Moreover, having connections with people who also has a kind of authority in society is another reason of the impressive changings. Some people mention that the average of the five people around you makes the capacity of yourself. Following this rule, people unconsciously try to improve or corrupt themselves into the average of group around you. Therefore, if a person having some relationships with sophisticated people, he or she will necessarily be polished up, and the appearance could be improved as …show more content…
Whatever the factors of the changings are, the most fundamental portion of improving self must be having confidence, and the confidence could be coming from both of internal and external factors. For example, people can have some confidence with lots of successes and failures through their life and with comprehending the methods of managing their emotions. Furthermore, having a career or being wealthy can give more confidence to the person; worthful relationships can be another reason for feeling reasonable confidence. Thus, with confidence, a person tend to be steady or reliable, and people around the individual can trust him or her

The way our culture has a tendency to view other individuals by there appearance will probably never change. In some way everyone has it set in his or her mind what makes a person "perfect". These characteristics include personal appearance, wealth and intelligence. We do not always get the chance to get to know a person, but rather make assumptions. Two poems, which reveal different perceptions of someone, include Richard Cory and The Barbie Doll.
You can’t judge a person accurately based on their visual aspect alone. In the book Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, a man named Amadou Diallo is killed by the police due to bad judgment on his appearance. Diallo is approached by the police at midnight; Diallo is sitting on a porch, looking up a down the street. The police found this subspecies and one police officer think Diallo looks like a push in burglar that has been around. The police approach Diallo and this scares Diallo, he is an immigrant with not very good English; Diallo runs from the police to his home as he tries to enter the building, he reaches in his pocket and an officer yells “gun” and they unload their guns on Diallo. The police subsequently found he was reaching for his wallet. The police were in the wrong for chasing Diallo, they had no
To begin, one of the major reasons that make people who they are is self-image.
Don’t judge a book by its cover. Meeting someone for the first time is much different than knowing them for a while. Firstly, people tend to notice appearance before all other characteristics even become a thought. Today, appearance plays a major role in the way people perceive us. One’s image, nowadays, is becoming increasingly more important to others, rather than personality or intelligence. This may be the case because modern society is greatly influenced by one’s beauty. Style and facial structure are the first things a majority of people take note upon when encountering others. This “silent judgement” of others becomes a main factor into why people, especially women, put so much thought into their
Appearance tends to mask what a person’s true personality really is. That is what is first noticed about a person upon meeting, but it cannot always be trusted. For one example: serial killers. Ted Bundy was known as “dashingly handsome” (Simon 23), but he was also capable of abducting and murdering twenty-four women and committing nightmarish necrophilic acts with their bodies. Society likes to think that if someone seems friendly they are much more likely to be just that, while people who look evil at first glance are interpreted to be cruel or evil. In NPR, Philip Zimbardo talks about his mock prison and how he carefully selected people who were classified as normal. He made the guards in charge of what happened that at the prison, and they would punish them according to how they saw fit. Zimbardo stated that he conducted this experiment because “that line between good and evil, which privileged people like to think is fixed and impermeable. With them on the good side and others on the bad side, [he] knew that line was movable and it was permeable.”(NPR) This was proven in the experiment; the guards were cruel and humiliated the ‘prisoners’... some of which may have been their own classmates. One of the cruelest acts these ‘guards’ committed was when it was another prisoner’s birthday. The pris...
The first impression you have when meeting someone is their appearance, which makes it easy to judge people based on how they
First impressions are created by a composite of signals given off by a new experience (Flora, 2004). The judgment of these impressions depends on the observer and the person being observed (Flora, 2004). When you meet someone for the first time it takes about three seconds to be evaluated by the observer (Mind Tools, 1996-2011,). During this time the person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your demeanor, and how you dress (Mind Tools, 2996-2011,). Impressions are important to us because they are impossible to be reserved and the set the tone for all the relationships that follow (Mind Tools, 1996-2011).
Social surroundings affect the awareness of the self, and differences in the environment such as age, health, and socioeconomic status promote specific behaviors directed by personal interest and bias (Orth, Trzesniewski, & Robins, 2010). As the self is concerned with its outside presentation, it adapts in a variety of situations (Myers, 2010).
Physical appearance affects the personal development of individuals. An attractive physical appearance can attract lot of people. It makes them sociable and individuals are more courteous of them. For examples film stars have elegant looks. (Patzer, 2006).
Taylor, Pepau, & Sears (2000) explain that first impressions are extremely important because they are the initial idea that an individual forms about another individual and determine whether they decide to pursue any type of relationship. People tend to form impressions of each other relatively quickly and use minimal information such as the gender of the o...
First impressions from the social perspective is the issue at hand, when viewing the importance of first impressions, and then taking in account the environment that one is in, then lastly viewing the important role that first impressions play throughout the course of a relationship such a friendship. The importance of first impressions is essential to the development of relationships be it for a friendship or just merely business acquaintances, the role of first impressions is resounded throughout the course of that relationships. How you are perceived has a very basic bearing as to how you are treated. Your outward appearance plays a pivotal role in the compiling of a first impression, when you are viewed by others, a snap decision is made about you that people will hold in their minds whether subconsciously, or conscientiously that first moment that they laid eyes on you. Also the way that you portray yourself comes into play at this point, your social skills are the main focus of the first impression after the mental image of you is implanted in the person’s mind. Your social skills would reflect how you wish to present yourself to the people that you are meeting, if you wish to get along then you take a route that would help you get along in your company of the people that you are meeting.
In this essay, I will compare people that are obsessed with physical appearance and appearances. It is not strange for individuals to worry about physical appearance. In fact, we could argue that we are living in a culture that weighs the most up-to-date trends or newest fashions more heavily than more pressing issues that affects society. As a result, many people become obsessed with their physical appearance in order to keep up with trends and fashions.
“No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change, become a better version of yourself.” - Madonna. When you read this quote, you think of one word, “Self-improvement.” Just with this one topic, you may ponder and ask yourself, “Who needs Self-improvement?” ,“ When do we need to start changing and How do we begin?”,” What will we get from it?” , and the most important question of all, “Why do we need self-improvement?” Self improvement comes from experiences. Experiences that were either blessings, mistakes, regrets, and overall a lesson each time. Self-improvement is a wake up call but will we ever take the chance to self-improve or just let it pass it by?
How do you judge if someone is beautiful for the first time you see them? By physical appearance is the most popular answer you may find. To the majority of people, beauty is solely depended on how a person look like on the outside. However, some might argue that inner beauty has to do more than outer appearance. It is difficult to fully define beauty because everyone has their own views about beauty. In my view, beauty has to deal with one’s self as the only rival.
