Participation in sport
Sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Everybody has done sport before, therefore different people have different opinions towards sport. In the case of students, many pupils think that participation in sport may improve their academic performance but others may think that participation in sport may distract them from their school work. In this essay, I will demonstrate that participation in sport will improve academic performance and have positive impact for pupils’ future life. Firstly I will discuss on the importance of sport for pupils, secondly the benefit of participation in sport and how it improve academic achievement will be explained. Thirdly I will elaborate more on how participation in sport may improve social skills.

Sports activities and interests provide many positive opportunities for children. We live in a competitive society therefore we must teach our children to function in competition and how to both win and lose as good sportsman. Children must learn that winning and losing are both temporary, and that they can't give up or quit. Learning to become a team player is also important for children who may prefer to be the Centre of attention. (Rimm’s,S. 2008). Participate in sport teaches children to learn mistakes from losing. Losing in competition can be seen as an opportunity to improve ourselves because pupils may find their weaknesses and try to overcome their weaknesses. Pupils can build confidence from participation of sport. Children need to begin involvement in less competitive sports at first which they can achieve improvement compared to past accomplishment to measure their own growth. This will help pupils to build their confidence
Sports are a crucial part of an individual 's character. Counter arguments made against having sports at schools are getting more and more public. The arguments make people, think again about having students play sports. Sports are useful because they give players skills they can use on and off the field: strength, leadership, and confidence.
While this is not completely true, sports develop people in many ways still, some people say that “sports make me what I am today.” While it is impossible to prove exactly the way each individual takes in sports, it is seen that overall it has some positive effect. Sports are a tool of development and instead of it being a choice between sports and academics, the real answer is both and that they work together to constantly develop quality generations of people. Though problems exist, the true qualities of sports maintain the role they have in developing young ones.

Participating in a sport at an early age can be essential to the overall growth process during a child’s upbringing. Whether the participation is through some sort of organized league or just getting together amongst friends and playing, the lessons learned from this can help teach these kids and provide a positive message to them as they develop. There is a certain point, however, when organized sports can hinder progress, which is when adults get too involved and forget about the underlying reason to why they are helping. While adult involvement is necessary, adult involvement can sometimes send the wrong message to children when they try to make participation become more than just about fun and learning. According to Coakley (2009), “organized sports are worth the effort put forth by adults, as long as they do what is in the best interest of their children and put that thought ahead of their own agenda” (Coakley, p. 151). This is a valid argument because once adults put themselves in front of the children and their values, it needs to be re-evaluated as to why they first got involved in the beginning. Partaking in organized sport and activity from a young age can be beneficial to the overall development of children, as long as decisions actions are made in the best interest of the children and not stemming from ulterior motives of adults.
There are some negative factors which lead to a debate. Including, are some negatives aspects about sixth graders having sports because they are newbie to middle school and they may need to adapt to the new environment around them, but shouldn’t they be prepared for the upcoming years? Likewise, because they are new people in a new school it may distract them in class to only think about the sport, but it may not. Another reason, the enjoyment of a sport can lead to the increase of stress, anxiety, and lost amusement of the activity. My natural highs are sports, music, and spending time with my family. I play soccer and run cross country and track, and these sports help push me to work harder, mentally and physically. All sports are difficult and very competitive, but when you practice and train with determination it will prepare you for your games or races. Sports also surrounds you with many supportive people. You will have coaches that will teach you ways on how to become a better athlete and teammates that will urge you with encouragement. My cross country coach told me that long distance running requires a lot of mental toughness, and when your body is giving up, your brain needs to remind yourself that you need to finish your race. Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. Many children that are actively involved in sports are looking to have fun and ensure a sense of belonging with peers. The youth of a community are able to gain new friendships in an exciting and pleasurable atmosphere, in the mean time improving skills and enjoying an active lifestyle. Children have the need to feel wanted and appreciated by others, whether it being a teammate, a coach, a friend, or family members. A positive atmosphere is needed for a child have a successful experience in a sport or activity. Without all these attributes a child may feel neglected and believe they have little or no value to a team. Over a course of time children drop out of an activity because there is no excitement left in the sport. This is because sports now focus on competition and winning rather than enjoyment of an activity. “[Throughout] childhood, boys overwhelmingly identify athletic ability as a determinant of social status among their peers, while girls tend to focus on appearance for peer acceptance.” (Adler, Kless, & Adler, 1992, p.170) The sport then becomes more stressful and uninteresting to youth members, as there is now pressure to be the best. Youth find it easier to give up on a sport rather than to try. The negativity that a sport projects can cause a child to no longer resume participating in other dynamic activities, children will feel unsuccessful and incompetent with all other activities. The majority of children and youth drop out of active sports and recreation because of a loss of fun, lack of success and/or excessive pressure from parents and coaches.
In today’s society, having a good education ensures a stable and prosperous future. Much pressure is inflicted upon students in order to have excellent grades, thus resulting in less time for extracurricular activities, such as sport. However, does consistent physical activity ensure an improved academic performance among peers at Marianopolis? Research has shown that being involved in fitness does improve grades. People who, in school, do not participate in extracurricular affairs tend to obtain lower grades than people who participate in sports. This subject is particularly interesting for students. It encourages them to practice more sports so that their grades could go up. Indeed, we believe that physical activity does in fact have a positive consequence on academic performance. In fact, research studies show a lot of correlation between physical activity and good grades at school. To that effect, a very interesting study by Professor Eric DeMeulenaere proves that students who participate in an extracurricular activity such as sports increase his or her chance for greater academic success. It has also been proven, that confidence plays a significant part in student’s academic standing. According to DeMeulenaere (2010), confidence can greatly encourage teenagers to participate in a sports team. Therefore, their academic performance will rise. Over the last few decades there can be seen a major shift in female participation within sports and physical activity. Many have the mentality that due to making immense headway recently, means that females can cease to worry about their ability to participate, however I do not agree with this. Despite a noticeable shift in female participation over the last few decades, women continue to face adversity through trying to prove the legitimacy of female athletes and sports, a lack of shift in gender ideology, and being seen as equals to males within the world or sports and physical activity in general.
