From a very young age, my parents instilled in me the habit of practicing good personal hygiene. They always told me in order to be my best self I had to ensure to care for my health through preventative methods. Unfortunately, many underprivileged families are not as fortunate to receive the same support and guidance as I have. Thus, when I started at the University of Florida, what I wanted to do became clear: to help disadvantaged communities in the healthcare field; more specifically, I focused my time in helping underserved communities understand the importance of preventative oral hygiene. And so, this neglected issue is what fueled my passion to pursue the craft of dentistry. While beginning my journey at the University of Florida, …show more content…
My favorite organization to work for was Project Downtown because it gave me the opportunity to provide hot meals to help the less fortunate. Being able to prepare, cook, and serve hot meals for this service showed me the deeper issues within these populations. A major one being the lack of understanding about how proper dental hygiene could improve their lives. This further drove my intense passion to become a dentist because I am fortunate enough to understand that deleterious oral hygiene practices can lead to larger health issues. With the rest of my time left at UF, I was inspired to do as much as I could involving dentistry. Therefore, I shadowed at the Shands Hospital dental clinics where I had the opportunity to appreciate the importance of strong bedside manners, technique, and first handedly being able to see the lasting impact a dentist can have on a patient. Towards the end of my sophomore year, I further went on to fuel my passion for the art of dentistry by becoming a co-founder of Delta Delta Sigma Pre-Dental Honor Society at the University of Florida. This organization allowed me to share my passion and create a prestigious community of prospective dental students. With this opportunity, I also was able to educate children at local schools about the importance of good dental health care. I had the honor of preparing volunteer services and socials for my peers involving some of my passions, such as soap carving, making dental goodie bags, and
What I am looking for in my career as a dentist is embodied in the National Health Service Corps’ (NHSC) mission to serve the community through unification between healthcare providers and patients within the community. It’s uplifting to know that the NHSC Scholarship Program exists to promote awareness about the underserved population. I believe the NHSC Scholarship Program serves as the perfect platform upon which to start my career and will steer me in the right direction in fulfilling my career goals. I look forward to making use of all the valuable tools that NHSC provides, including resources and experience, so I can learn how to best ...
In the Dental Hygiene field, many challenges come about every day and during different situations. Every day there are new challenges and unusual situations that occur in the dental field, but one challenge that continues to come about and has been a big dispute over the years is the ability to provide beneficial information about oral health care for the underprivileged. For the individuals that are not fortunate enough to pay to have services done in the dental office, lack the knowledge of how important good oral health care is. They do not receive the one on one conversations explaining the significance of taking care of your teeth and gums that the patients who can afford to make appointments and receive essential services do. That
My college plans include attending a two-year college and then pursing a degree in dental hygiene. I believe that I will have a great opportunity to give back to my community with my chosen career. As a dental hygienist, there would be many ways to help young and old alike. The time that I would volunteer would enable me to become more involved in the life of our community.
I am fortunate that my experiences have made me aware of these things so that when I do return to these communities as a dentist, I can not only better serve my patients as a provider, but I can also be a leading advocate for the change that is so desperately needed by the individuals in these communities. As I continue along my career path in dentistry, I intend to keep volunteering in dental clinics in underserved communities as well as participating in formal organizations such as Saving Smiles to more effectively address these issues as well as enhance my understanding of the dental field. Perhaps while I serve in these communities, I can inspire and support future health professionals that will continue to advance the incredible changes that our health fields are currently
I can remember being a little boy sitting at the piano in church, listening to the preacher talk of how Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, which symbolizes the idea that we are here to serve. That message profoundly resonated with me throughout life. It was not until I began accompanying my grandmother to her multiple dental visits that I was able to see how I could put this calling of service into action. I saw firsthand the significant positive impact my grandmother’s dentist was able to make in her life, which encouraged me to want to learn about the field of dentistry. I then started researching dental health and learning of the importance of oral healthcare and how it affects the entire body. I then began to learn of how patient access to proper dental care was limited because of several factors such as, financial barriers, transportation, and dental fear, especially in the underserved minority communities. Given the shortage of black dentists, I realized I could make a positive difference by being an inspiration to those in the community, as well as serve in a professional career that would provide needed healthcare to the community. This is when I began to develop such a strong passion for

As I started my new journey of becoming a dental hygienist, I came into the program with no background of dental. I came into this program with an open mind and willing to embrace new concepts as well as develop new skills. During my time at the Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene (CADH), I learned that as a dental hygienist that I am committed to promoting and helping each individual achieve their optimal oral health goals. In support of my client’s goals, I may assume any or all of the roles included in the dental hygiene scope of practice. My goal throughout this program was to help my clients achieve their optimal oral health goals through education, health promotion and providing preventive and clinical therapy.
My interest in the dental industry happened by total happenstance. As a successful cosmetologist, I wasn 't planning on being in this industry nor did I have any interest dentistry initially. By someone 's advice I decided to take a chance on it. Upon my visit to a ten week dental assisting program, I met with an admissions counselor. She, also a cosmetologist, mentioned that she noticed a lot cosmetologists transitioning over into dentistry. That sparked an interest in me to look into other more reputable schools. I thought about the two industries and how much they have in common. Things like dentistry being skill-based and having an aspect of art. There is definitely a certain level of hand skills that you have to have, as well as working with people and bringing up someone’s self-esteem. Correcting smiles and treating ailments that prevent people from eating and smiling is my motivation for dentistry. Upon enrolling at Texas
I decided to do my research report on dentistry because it is a perfect blend of science and art. It is a science in that you must fully comprehend on the different types of diagnostic and procedures you are doing. It is an art in that you are constantly working with your hands to create a beautiful smile. The impact you make on helping a person achieve an impeccable smile is not one to compare with materialistic things like money or cars. People often mistake dentist as only doing practices when in fact they could do more, like research. I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to interview Dr. Sarah Pham, DDS, a close family friend who practices dentistry in her own private office in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Pham was
Introduction: In Canada, general dental health is not part Canada’s national system of health insurance (Medicare) (1) except for some dental surgical procedures that are performed at hospitals. Since Oral health does not come under the Health Act about ninety-five percent of the oral health care services are offered on a fee-for-service basis. Oral health care is under provincial or territorial jurisdiction like other health care services and publically financed dental care programs provide the remaining five percent of oral health care services (2). Thus, majority of Canadians receive oral health via privately owned dental clinics. Privately owned dental care gives these services providers control over dental service charges, types of available treatment for the patients and number of follow-up appointment for treatments or routine care. Service users pay for the dental expenses from their own pockets or utilize insurance coverage (1).
