A basketball coach is responsible for more than just instructing the game of basketball. In my opinion, a coach’s success is determined by factors more important than the number under the win column. His or her program must contain a set of goals, core values, and philosophy that the entire program lives and breathes by. For me, as a coach, my goals will go beyond just winning, but how I impact lives, teach lessons, and for my players to improve and learn every day. I will emphasize a variety of traits my players will be held accountable for on the court, as well as off the court. The most important key to my program will be our core values. The core values for my team will extend outside of basketball and will allow my players, my staff, and …show more content…
For me, my goals will be the following: impact the lives of my players positively, teach my players life lessons, make the sport of basketball fun, and for my players to improve and learn every day. As a coach, my players will be around me day in and day out. I will be a leader, and an away-from-home father figure. Therefore, my goal will to be to impact the lives of my players in a way that will impact their lives, positively, outside of basketball. To accomplish this goal, I will teach the valuable lessons basketball applies to life: family (teamwork), responsibility, always give 100%, and to be coachable. Through the expression of teamwork, I hope to show my team how important it is to communicate, to rely on one another, and work together, in a sense of unity, like a family should. I plan to emphasize the importance of being on time, being in position, being a good role model, and all of the other responsibilities that come with the game of basketball. I want to show my players that hard work always pays off, and to always give your all. Lastly, my goal is to show my players the importance of being coachable. Being coachable means to be able and willing to take criticism, to listen to those challenging you to be better, and applying that constructive criticism to better yourself as well as your team. …show more content…
Like my goals and core values, when my team plays on the hardwood, we will have a great sense of unity. I will show importance to communicating on offense and defense, making the extra pass, and play as a unit. It is crucial that all players understand their assignments, as well as, the assignments of their teammates to the right and left of them. A team that works together is a tough team to beat. I will also emphasize gritty-in-your-face defense. I would love to run a tough man defense and switch into a trapping-zone throughout the game. I will strongly reiterate the importance of rebounding. Every time the ball is the air, my players must have a body on their man. With great defense and rebounding we will be able to create turnovers, reduce second chance points, and turn defense into offense by running the floor in transition. I prefer pushing the ball up the floor, however, in circumstances where we will play half-court offense, ball movement will be key. While facing man-to-man defenses, I will implement an offense with multiple off-ball and on-ball screens, allowing a free-flowing offense. On the other hand, when it comes to zone defenses, we will adjust accordingly. Whether we’re up against a 2-3, 1-3-1, 1-2-2, or a 2-1-2 zone defense, ball movement is crucial, our sets will emphasize
In the book, "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, he talks about the importance of a teacher and coach as a role model for kids. He talks about his successes he had in coaching, the lessons he has learned, and the ones he has taught. In the book, you will get to walk through his life from when he was a little kid and first fell in love with basketball to when he retired from active coaching at UCLA in 1975. He also talks about his "Pyramid of Success" and the traits that every player should have.

At every level in life people use goal setting to chase and achieve a desired solution. John Swales tells us that, “a discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals.” (220) Goals are a worldwide starting point for a lot of different things that does not exclude basketball. Personally
“Be more concerned with you character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” These words of John Wooden are just a few out of many wise quotes millions of people, not just athletes, are inspired by today and likely will continue to be inspired by for a very long time. Basketball fans and experts consider John Wooden as one of, if not, the greatest coaches of all time. Much of his success is a result of his beliefs and coaching system. Knowing the background of Coach Wooden’s playing and coaching career plays a significant role in understanding how he practiced his beliefs with his teams and how his philosophy and success intertwined to set a precedent for the remainder of collegiate basketball.
Our defensive involves all five players to play together: talking on defense, seeing the ball, and moving as the ball moves” (Coaching Basketball). After playing great defense, they can reward themselves on offense. Coach K tends to run a motion offense. Most of the time Duke’s motion offense has three guards on the perimeter, at the three-point line, and two post in the key. Motion is all about spacing and cutting. “The combination of the spacing and cutting through the middle continually opens up the driving lanes” (Kelbick). Opening up the driving lanes allows for a player to drive into the basket and kick the ball back out if necessary, creating multiple scoring opportunities. Duke is extremely successful with this offense. For instance, the 2017-2018 basketball season they are averaging ninety-two points each game (Kelbick). When Coach K’s defense and offense come together, it is outstanding to
As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. A quality coach can build a player up while a bad coach can tear them down. My goal as a coach was to always leave the player striving to be the best they could be. A good coach
From most of the questions I asked, they were a few of the basic things I would need in order to be a great coach. One of the main questions was taking criticism from fans. The fans are always just fans. Which means they know nothing about the amount of work your team puts in or know anything about what the team may be going through so just let them be. The most hurdle one will have to overcome is to telling a player he/she is not good enough for the
The gym is full of people; the stands are so full that they overflow onto the edge of the court and out the doorway. The shrieks and screeches cry out from the crowd’s cheers. The ball crashes through the net, as they jump popcorn flies. The home team hit a three-point shot; they are winning with only a few seconds left. In these few seconds, the coach looks around. He realizes why he does what he does. At this point, none of the labor, time, and effort matters. The only thing that matters is the win, seeing his team succeed; watching a team grow is unlike any other feeling. In order to understand that feeling, one first has to appreciate the game: the rules and regulations, the legends that have played and coached, the development of the game,
Throughout the book “Leading with the Heart,” I read about prime examples of the following leadership theories: transformational leadership, trait theory, behavioral theory, and situational leadership. He recommended that leaders begin with the trait theory when beginning the selection process when starting his or her organization. In chapter one and as well as chapter two, Coach K refers to coachable players. Meaning, players or members that do not mind being taught and learning; willing to take a back seat to someone else in charge. Establish right away in the first meeting the only rule for the team: “Don’t do anything that’s detrimental to yourself, because if it is detrimental to you, it will be detrimental to our program (Krzyzewski, 2000, p.4). He reiterates that leaders must be very selective in this process, because the people you select represent you as the leader, and your company. In some cases leaders must sacrifice some skill and talent for people who have outstanding character. “Character and respect will outlast talent when talent can’t see past themselves.” Krzyzewski mentions that he will sign a kid who has the character of a leader and train them to gain the skill necessary down the road. I believe that this is why the Duke Men’s basketball program is very successful because he picks
As a college basketball player, I learned that being an effective leader did not mean that I had to be a constant bundle of energy. Rather, I realized over time it is more important to understand your teammates and what makes them tick, and to translate that knowledge into separate leadership styles to match each individual. This is crucial when working with an extremely diverse group of attitudes, personalities, and mindsets. I believe people would describe my style as steady, positive, and upbeat – opposite of my head coach in many ways. Countless times I would pull a teammate aside who had been berated and explain in a constructive
As a coach you do fail sometimes and that's what is difficult but Michael Jordan once said, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeeded.” I believe that this goes for coaching as well because you are going to fail over and over again and you will soon see that those failures are actually your accomplishments. No one said life was easy but coaching can be easy and it’s a way to connect with players and others and bring out the best in people and show that people can work together and accomplish many things no matter how difficult or hard it is and it can be fun and thrilling at the same
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching.
Sports are often identified to have positive influences on many individuals. The sports industry is growing worldwide, especially the basketball industry, which is regarded in second place behind football. The global prevalence of basketball is unquestionable, especially among the young. Basketball is a dynamic team sport that involves a pattern of alternating, active, and skilled movement activities. There are compound demands that require a mixture of individual skills, team plays, strategies, and motivational aspects.
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. After reading various articles this leads me to the question, what is a coach? How do coaches differ from one another? In addition are we forgetting the importance of not only coaching but the sports psychology aspect of coaching overall? Regardless of what you may have read or heard I believe not only do all coaches have their own coaching style but every coaching technique and style is different. Coaching styles and positive psychology are two techniques that can provide
My personal philosophy is: I am a coach because of my love for the game and my wanting to teach this passion to others. I believe that playing a sport will not only prepare a child to win, but also for life and the challenges that come with it. I will strive to help every athlete to compete to the best of their ability, while ensuring that are learning skills that will later on better them in their everyday lives.
