Importance Of Freedom In Fahrenheit 451

Do you consider your life full of freedom?Perhaps you overlooked some freedoms and took them for granted. Freedom is defined as having the power or right to speak, think, or act without hindrance or restraint. There are many examples of freedom being demanded. Even America has had its share of wars for freedom from the Revolutionary war to the Civil war. Freedom is never given, but demanded.

One may claim that freedom was bestowed upon us upon the day of birth with freedom of thought. Now this was given to all humans for humans all have consciousness. While this may be true, what is this freedom of thought useful for if you cannot act upon said thought? With the novel Fahrenheit 451, Faber informs Montag that, he could have spoken up, but did

not because no one else would(Bradbury,110). Faber demonstrated his freedom to think, but could not act because he was not free from fear and oppression. Faber was scared of the punishments and could have defended innocents,but instead did nothing and grunt. What is the point of thought if he couldn’t act without any fear? This was not freedom because he couldn’t demand that those claimed guilty were innocent. He was never given the chance to act without consequence which is why freedom must be demanded.
Some people were not born with the freedom of being a member of society so they had to demand it.The African Americans up until 1963 had not been treated as members of society, but as a rapists, murderers,and even as slaves even though most whites abused the blacks. In the “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. Martin Luther King says even after Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation, blacks were still mistreated despite the document stating they were free(MLK,48). It was proven that even with that document along with the Bill of Rights and the constitution that they were still not free from discrimination.When King had to speak out at the Lincoln memorial about the mistreatment of blacks it proved he was demanding their freedom. Their freedom was never given in the till the protesters demanded it. King also states that America would be in unrest unless the black man was granted rights(MLK,49). It meant that protests and demands would not stop unless they were granted equality by ending segregation. This whole situation shows that in the eyes of African Americans that they were not truly free. Freedom was never given and had to be demanded even after the blacks were “freed” as slaves.
Clothes help us define who we are displays our personality.

Women in Iran don’t have this luxury.They never got the choice to wear what they wanted to because religious customs were enforced into the law. In “Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return”, Satrapi states, Little details made a big difference in the fight against the rule(Satrapi,84). When some of the women defied the laws set by the government, they discreetly had demanded their freedom.Makeup or colored clothing displayed their demand. They wanted to express themselves so they rebelled with these little actions risking arrest. Their choice of clothes was never given to them so they demanded the right by rebelling. After years of not being able to express themselves they felt as though they were representing the community with the same clothes, but they wanted their own. Azar Nafisi says in “Reading Lolita in Tehran”,” Does she realize how dangerous she can be when every stray gesture is a disturbance to public safety?”(Nafisi,83). The author emphasizes that many actions and clothing are banned so there is opportunity to rebel. Rebelling is demanding for it to be changed. Clothing and movements can be an act that represents the demand. This granted them the ability to rebel and

demand.
Freedom must always require a desire and demand. As the innovators of tomorrow we must keep that in mind and think to the future and consider the possibilities if there could be equal freedom for all. Fight for freedom no matter the cost because there will always be a cost.
