CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Introduction
English has come to be the international language and the language of global communication. In the Globalisation English has been made a compulsory ingredient of a successful personality as it is an important tool generally used in international communications all over the world.
Now-a-days, the Indian students who go to schools and colleges are not ready to use English for efficient communication. The main reason for this is that the teaching of English is not focused on imparting communication skills to the students. Both at school and college levels, English is treated as a content-oriented subject and not a skill-based language.

It is also aimed to identify what type of language needs required to the Engineering students in order to comprehend the nature of Englis for Science and Technology.
1.3. The Status of English in India English is considered associate official language in India and it is also the medium of instruction in the Indian education system. According to the constitution of India, English is a second language. India is one of the former British colonies and it is a multi-lingual country so that English is still used for communication among people having different mother tongues. English is widely used for educational purposes in public schools and institutions providing higher education, at conferences, meetings, private offices and big hotels. In advertisements, English is generally used and most of the magazines published in English. Most people do not have any difficulty in understanding English. The layman can understand English and answer occasionally but not fluently. In India the people’s attitude towards English is very positive. Even the people from rural areas send their children to English medium schools by paying heavy fees. They feel that the English school has a good status in

Proposed Research: Teaching/Learning English for Science and Technology The present study attempts to assess the needs of students in learning English as part of the B.E./B.Tech. Course. The needs assessment would be based on the perception of the needs by the students of professional engineers, by the teachers of English and by the teachers of subjects other than English in the colleges of Engineering and Technology. The views of these different groups would be taken into consideration and interpreted by the researcher.
The syllabus would be designed on the basis of learning activities that are required by the students. The students and the teachers would be asked to give their opinions on the classroom methodology, internal assessment, evaluation pattern, etc. Taking the opinions of students and teachers into consideration, suggestions would be given on classroom methodology, the kind of exercises to be included in the instructional materials, internal assessment, evaluation pattern, etc. Some teaching strategies would be proposed which would result in a better learning experience and would benefit the learners in achieving the skills required to study their specialist
An ancient Chinese proverb once said that “Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere”. Learning a new second language can be one of the best treasures one can ever acquire. English is known to be one of the world’s most widely used languages. As most of us know, the English language is spoken as a native language by over three hundred million people across the globe. It is the official language of many familiar countries such as the United States, Australia, Canada, Britain and many more.
In India, English has been in use for more than four centuries. Its presence was established by traders of the East India Company so it was first the language of the early merchants, missioners and settlers. English became the official and academic language of India by the early twentieth century. The rising of the nationalist movement in the 1920's that attempted to introduce Hindi as the National language of India brought some anti-English sentiment, especially in the non-Hindi-speaking states, but they would even present their resistance primarily in English. It was decided then to temporarily maintain English for official purposes. Once independence was gained and the British were gone, English continued to be widely used, and in fact, the new constitution makers deliberated and wrote the Indian Constitution in the English language.
In “English Is a Crazy Language” by Richard Lederer, he states that English is the most spoken language of the world. English is spoken by various people in the many fields. We use English from readi...
English has a subsidiary official language status in India, whereby it is the most important language for national, political and commercial communication, as well as in education. With more than 400 million speakers, Hindi is also one of the most widely spoken language and a primary tongue for most of India.
What is specifies with respect to objective, content, learning activities and learner and teacher roles suggest the function for materials. The teaching and learning materials contribute considerably in acquiring speaking, listening, reading or writing skills. The instructional materials further specify subject matter, content and also define the learning objectives of the day that collectively constitute the goals of the syllabus. Some authentic materials turn the learning in ESL classroom into competency based, content-based, task-based and cooperative and some are designed to replace the teacher, so that learning can take place independently. Some materials direct various interactional patterns in the classroom whereas there are also materials that require specially trained teacher with near-native competence in the English language especially with respect to certain English language units such as accent and
A language with rather humble roots, one that has been twisted and bent, one that has taken and borrowed from other languages, and one that has been the subject of much debate as to the correctness of certain usages, today English is the language that the world uses to communicate. The world uses English for a variety of reasons from commerce and trade, to political decisions, to technology and science, and beyond. The entire world uses English to get business done. Thus it truly has become the lingua franca for the world.
India is a country with a long history in English speaking. But, the story of how English came to India is still contested a issue and an ideological debate in
This essay investigates the ways in which the English-medium education can be perceived as a solution or a problem in UK educational setting, in the specific case where English is not the dominant language of the pupils’ homes and community, and outside the UK, with particular reference to India’s educational setting. First of all, in order to proceed with the analysis, it is important here to highlight the meaning of the term English-medium education. The term refers to the use of English as the medium of instruction, the language used to teach all the schooling subjects, such mathematics, philosophy or art. The term is opposed to the ‘English language’ where the language is taught as a subject and where the attention is focused in its grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and literature. English is the medium of education in countries where the first language is English like UK, USA, New Zeeland and Australia. In addition, English-medium is used in other countries where English is not the mother tongue of the population and where more than one official language is spoken by the people...
English is an important language that is should be mastered by people around the world. It is used as a common language or lingua franca which is a language used for communication between people whose first language differ (Holmes, 1992). Increasingly, English is used for many printed information in our daily life. A great deal of the world’s scientific, commercial, economic, and technological information is written and published in English. That is the reason why students of elementary school up to university learn English as second language (ESL) or foreign language (EFL) nowadays.
After the independence, India became a nation state and it was planned that English would no longer be used as the language of administration, but they did not know which language would replace it. Their first choice was Hindi which is the most common spoken language in India, but after a violent protest the option was put down. After the violent protest English was then kept as the language of administration. Choosing a single national language for more than 900 million people with over 1000 languages was very difficult.
English is in India today, a symbol of people’s aspirations for quality in education and a fuller participation in national and international life. Its colonial origins now forgotten or irrelevant, its initial role in independent India, tailored to higher education (as a “library language”, a “window on the world”), now felt to be insufficiently inclusive socially and linguistically the current status of English stems from its overwhelming presence on the world stage and the reflection of this in the national arena. Even though there are advantages as well as disadvantages, the need for international language for communication, politics, economics and security is necessary and English is the best “language candidate” for that function. English is a language spread all over the world and it is used by millions and millions of speakers. According to my opinion, people should use English as a tool to communicate with all cultures but every country must keep their culture and language is a great part of it. In conclusion, language defines identity of a country and everyone should keep their language and explore others.
Just a few centuries ago, English was spoken by elite sections and rich people in India. Today there are more non-native speakers than native users of English all over the world. English is nowadays official language in over 60 countries. At the time Indian independence, English was the language which was for only administration. India, after becoming independent in 1947, was left with a colonial language, in this case English, as the language of government. Kachru (1986: 111) rightly says that “English functions in the Indian socio-cultural context to perform roles relevant and appropriate to the social, educational and administrative network of India.” Since it is international language, in the present days, there are many different types
"English is considered to be a 'global language '. Account for the dominance of English today, and discuss what the future of the English language might be."
English is an international language of communication (Nunan, 2003). So that English is a necessary basic skill for human. For instance, we meet lots of people who came from different countries in our daily life. Since our mother language is different, we can use English to be a lingua franca to communicate with them and try to understand their culture easily.
