There is a saying that typically goes, you do not know the value of something until it is gone. When I lost dance from my life for only nine months, it felt like a piece of me was gone. I think this is the first and most important thing to know before I begin this essay because it is why I do what I do and why I love what I do. In this essay I will be addressing my dance history, my life with dance, my goals for this year, and other information. I have been dancing for my entire life. I danced at two studios in my hometown. First, I danced at The Dance Academy of Cedar Rapids. I spent the majority of my dance training here. I studied ballet, pointe, modern, tap, lyrical, jazz, and hip hop. This event was probably the most traumatic experience I have faced. I was out of dance for nine months. I could not compete my entire junior year and felt like I had nothing. However, it only strengthened my passion for dance and further made me know that I wanted to continue it for the rest of my life. Then later in my senior year, I tore my meniscus as well. This injury took me out of two competitions of our season and I was out for a month. It is hard to bounce back quickly from injuries and it is even harder to have to watch from the sidelines. Obviously, I will always have fears of being reinjured but thankfully, I feel confident in my body and my own strength. My hobbies include choreographing, teaching, babysitting, reading, cooking, and being active. I have always thoroughly enjoyed creating my own work. This summer I choreographed two solos for dancers at my studio and also got to teach a jazz class for six-year old children. I love children and babysitting gives me so much joy. Reading is also very important to me. I always have a book that I am reading or that is sitting next to my bed. I also love to cook. My favorite thing to cook is pasta or any desserts. I love cooking because it often times brings me closer to my

At a young age, I discovered my passion for the arts division. My parents put me in studio dance lessons at the age of four. I have competed and participated in different dance teams and placed at the state level in high school. Dance is a huge part of my life, and even though I am no longer a member of a dance team, I still move to the beat of the music when I’m having a rough day. Dance is not my only escape from a stressful day, music is something that I require in my daily routine because it’s my relaxing and focusing time. After dancing over thirteen years at Annabel Timm’s School of Ballet, I was given the opportunity to help teach a hip-hop class for kids in elementary school. Every Wednesday night, I would meet fifteen little girls at the studio and teach them a new dance to perform in front of their parents. After only a few lessons, each girl became such an important part in my life. During class I would answer their questions about technique and different fundamentals of dance, but when class was over I answered questions about their homework and talked them through all of their problems pertaining home and school. I realized I wasn’t just a dance assistant to them, but I was a mentor.
As a child I've always loved ballet from afar; there was just a grace about ballerinas that I too wanted to have. It took me a while to understand that dancing makes me feel amazing. Dancing would prove to be my pinnacle form of expression and the ultimate way to embrace freedom with all of me. Thus, taking this ballet class seemed like the smartest way to pleasantly incorporate dance into my busy economics ruled schedule. I thought I would be nervous on the first day, but I would find myself excited and eager.
We had spent weeks on learning many routines. I was in the team group dance, I had a solo, and I was in another group dance, but with the older kids. I pushed myself so hard. I was determined to not mess up, and do really well. If the routine got messed up, I felt as if it’d be my fault. Especially since I wasn’t as old as the other girls and guys. Soon enough, I had much bigger things to worry about. I was about to go on stage. I had a massive amount of butterflies in my tummy. “Breathe. You can do this Winter-Lee. Just feel the rhythm, and let go.” I got onto the stage and I lost myself into the dance, and became less worried about what people in the audience would think. After my solo dance, I got a standing ovation. I have never felt so out there, from who I thought I was. I cried tears of joy because I conquered my stage freight with an act of bravery and confidence. I was so ecstatic, I couldn’t wait until the group number. When it came to the group number, we did really well. We are were in sync not only with our bodies and minds, but with our soul as well. I am very thankful for my experiences in dance. I am not as shy as I once was. I think dancing changed me, and made a big impact on my life.
Dance is easily the reason why I should stop functioning and breathing, yet it is the exact reason why I do. I never seem to be good enough to keep dancing, yet every time I step on that stage, I somehow become so much more talented than I could ever imagine. It is so easy to get lost in the swarm of emotions in dance, time is no object when the music is perfect and everything feels just right. Time is so easily lost when I would sit on my bedroom floor and cry because I am just not good enough to pull this dance off. Ever since I was young I have always loved to dance. Dance is a very social activity that also requires physical strength and endurance. I always feel happier when I dance because it’s a great way to boost endorphins and lower stress levels. Dance has also enabled me to grow as a person both physically and emotionally. I have been dancing competitively for six years now. Throughout those years I have had amazing opportunities to meet so many inspiring people and make lifelong friends. One of my favorite parts of dance is definitely being part of a team and going to competitions, it’s so much fun! At competitions, I always get the feeling that all of my hard work has paid off. Even though it is a competition the atmosphere is still outstanding as I am surrounded by enthusiastic people who all love the same things as me.
I admire when people find a passion that is personal to them. So when I see their eyes spark, it makes me grateful that my talent has helped create who I am. For years now I have loved the artistry of dance. When I was ten I went to The Nutcracker with my family, and when I saw the elegant ballerinas leap and turn while glimmering in the lights it motivated me to be just like them. Years later, there has never been a day that I haven't danced, whether it is in my room, in the studio, or on stage. There are variations of dance I study in which are lyrical, ballet, jazz, and hip hop. I cherish the couple of minutes I am able to portray my passion to the judges for my love of dance. My journey in athletics was brought to an abrupt halt when I was injured playing soccer in 8th grade. The soccer game had just started I was playing goalie a player of the opposing team slide illegally into me which caused a severe laceration just below my knee. Over the course of the next several days the doctors fought to save my right leg and a Vascular Plastic Surgeon performed a major surgery reconstructing my right knee. The morning after I woke up from surgery I thought I had lost my leg due to the excruciating pain. My leg was saved and the surgery on my knee had left me with over 600 stitches.
Up until sophomore year of Highschool I felt that my defining title besides being a student, was being a dancer, a ballet dancer more specifically. I had hours long classes multiple times a week. Weekends would always have at least one day blocked off, dedicated to a long rehearsal and the trip there and back. Each year, I had to buy more and more pairs of pointe shoes, as they exhausted themselves with increasing speed. Stress and anxiety was produced from my inability to do a double pirouette of to extend my leg high enough. My life outside of school, family and friends revolved around ballet.
Learning, growing, experiencing; involved. Throughout my four years at North Fort Myers High School, I have grown into the person I am today. Through these experiences and memories, these outcomes have affected my life in an astonishing way. Because of these morals, my academic drive, and personal goals will only grow at the University of South Florida.

1. As a choreographer I have gotten the chance to look at dance from a completely new perspective and it has affected my thoughts about different aspects of dance in the following ways. Dance training is super important to prepare you for choreography. Some moves are taught in training that are difficult to learn and need lots of practice. It is difficult to teach these moves in a choreography class because you often only have enough time to choreograph. It is also important as a choreographer to have lots of dance training because the more training you have, the bigger your dance vocabulary will be for you to pull moves from. This makes choreography less work because you don’t have to make up your own moves, just take from what you have already

As a child I always wanted to be in the spotlight. I was always the ham in family pictures, the one who had to excel past my brother, and be in the know of everything. When I was about twelve years old, I realized that entertaining people was what I was all about. Since I wasn’t any good at telling the jokes around the campfire or singing acappella, I thought about trying my dance skills. I liked dancing and I have always enjoyed music videos like Janet Jackson’s “Miss you much”, so I thought why not? What did I have to lose? With the support of my parents, particularly my mom, I went for the gusto.
