Courage is important is a very important aspect of our daily lives. Without courage we wouldn’t have been able to accomplish so many things, for example, we wouldn’t have gone into outer space or declared our independence from England. The three main types of courage are: social/moral, physical, and intellectual/emotional courage. Social/moral courage is when you do something brave, knowing that there’ll be social consequences, for example, standing up to a bully. This book showed many different types of courage the most common of which in my opinion being social/moral courage. This book was mostly about a boy named Jesse who befriends the new girl that nobody likes and their adventures together. Facing the Lion was mostly about a boy named Joseph who grew up in Kenya, in his village there was a rule saying that at least one child per family had to go to school. After Joseph’s older brother ran away from school Joseph lied about his age so he could take his place and Joseph ended up loving school and did very well. I choose this quote because I think that it is a very good example of social/moral courage. One of the reasons that Joseph standing up to Addison was so courageous was because leading up to the moment of the fight Addison had been picking on Joseph for months and Joseph had become afraid of him so it took a lot of courage for him to make the first move and pin Addison. I think that the reason that Joseph finally stood up to Addison was because he was so fed up with Addison making fun of him and nobody doing anything about it that he finally just snapped. I also think that if the circumstances had been any different and it was the first time Addison had challenged him to a fight and made fun of him then Joseph wouldn’t have done anything. Some other courageous moments in Facing the Lion was when he decided he was going to go to college in the US, when he faced the lion, and when he was the first person in his tribe to stay in school and go to
