For the UCDC summer 2014 program, I worked as a business intern at National Education Association (NEA). NEA is the largest professional association as well as the largest labor union in the United States. Members include teachers, professors, school bus drivers, and people working in the US educational system. The organization has more than 3 million members and the association operates on membership payments.
Since I am majoring in economics and accounting, my main interest while finding a summer internship was to acquire corporate experience related to the field of accounting and to learn more about the business aspect of how an organization operates. After I received an internship interview and offer with Ms. Northcutt, the intern coordinator

All of my assignments and reporting vastly required the use of various software systems as well as basic computer skills in order to successfully complete the assignments. I used Microsoft Excel to keep record of data and I think that my Excel skills have greatly improved to a whole other level through the work I have completed on the software throughout my internship. I also got a chance to learn more about other different programs such as PeopleSoft, an accounting program, and ImageNOW, a program used for keeping …show more content…
One of the main reasons being that I have gained valuable experience of purchasing and contracting tasks, which are skills needed in any business setting. Although my internship was not directly related to the field of accounting, I gained the experience necessary to be able to someday start my own business. I also grew a lot from this internship because not only was I able to improve my social skills, but also learn more about different cultures. The American culture is relatively new to me and getting to learn more about the American culture was a much appreciated experience.
I realized that one of the advantages of interning in Washington, DC is that the city has a lot of people from different backgrounds. The NEA as an organization had around 20 interns just for the summer of 2014, and we all came from different backgrounds. By spending time with the other interns after work hours, I have developed a really close friendship with the other interns and have learned how to engage with different types of people. I have developed a sense of awareness of the different surrounding cultures and at the same time, was also able to improve my social
My internship began with a short orientation of KPMG’s office located in the Wells Fargo Building of downtown Minneapolis. After some introductions and a few training sessions that outlined what was expected of us in terms of the rules and laws we were required to follow including disclosure of client and firm information and independence affidavits, for example, we were briefed on our trip to Orlando for National Internship Training which would take place the following work day. Training for Partnership-focused federal tax interns would last a whole week filled with events and educational seminars that would introduce us to tax fundamentals and software tutorials that would be helpful during our time with KPMG. National Internship Training would be the primary training session for every KPMG intern in the nation, hosting thousands of interns assigned to all pillars of accounting (audit, tax, and advisory). During meals and events the interns had opportunities to meet interns from around the country helping to expand our professional and social networks, which I found to be one ...
The summer intern applicant is required to have a well rounded academic background with course work in finance in order to understand the managers or trainees whom will be training him/her.
The new skills the DC program can provide can be crucial to a career move in the future. Further, I believe that having an internship in DC on a resume can really aid in making oneself stand out. I think that doing the DC internship can help me reach my full potential before I graduate. Moreover, I truly believe that the DC internship can help me demonstrate to future employers, professors, or mentors that I have the right intention in mind. My intention before entering the “real world” is to demonstrate that I have a good work ethic and that it is very important to me what I have to offer to the world.
This past semester I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to intern at the Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services, a company that is commonly referred to as “MiHIN”. At MiHIN, I was in the Finance and Accounting department where I worked along side three other full-time employees. The four months I spent at MiHIN were extremely beneficial because I was able to develop skills that are applicable to my future career aspirations, as well as, gain a better understanding of careers in finance and accounting.

In the hospital, I've got to be in touch with real patients and I even got to treat them. I would ask the patients how they are doing and give them some water if they needed it. The staff also gave me a green light and allowed me to talk to patients and connect to them freely. When you talk to the patients, you can really learn a lot from them. .This experience benefited me because I was exposed to the real world and real world problems. The hospital experience also opened my heart as some of the patients were in terrible condition. It made me realize how fortunate I am and also made me grateful for all the blessings in my life. I can only thank God for that. Another benefit that I got from my internship was having the chance to develop cooperation skills with colleagues. I cooperated with the doctors and hospital staff to get jobs done. They have given me important tasks which I completed. They also give me 100% responsibility when working in the
Volunteerism, civic engagement and advocacy are the driving forces for creating change and making a positive impact in your community and society at large. While gaining internship and job experience can lead to community impact and social change, it’s important for us to remember that before we start advocating for change and informing others about issues we care about, we need to fully understand the complexity and depth of the social, environmental, or economic issue we are passionate about.
All business schools should have an internship program. The benefits that the internship program can give to its students are outstanding. In particular, it was helpful to here from individuals on the panel that were graduates from our program. Elizabeth Cowart, a LPC at Transitions of Augusta, informed my classmates and I about about her personal internship experiences. She noted four key things (1) the importance of getting as much hands-on experience as possible (2) taking a mental note of the what you like and dislike at each internship site (3) using weekly supervision hours to discuss your areas of strengths and weaknesses and (4) remembering to always maintain a professional image. In addition, she also gave a brief overview of opportunities (e.g., adolescent group therapy, child and parent therapy, disability evaluations, etc.) that interns might have at Transitions of
Throughout my internship, I was well trained and did receive a fruitful experience. The real working environment prepared me for future employment after my graduation. However, I did encounter some problems, which I gradually managed to deal with. Whatever happens, productivity increases by keeping a positive attitude.
I started as an absolute beginner and when I learned more about the job I started thoroughly enjoying it. The work was aimed at identifying threats and assessing the damage they were likely to cause, tagging and eliminating them. To execute my job responsibilities well, I started learning fundamentals of Linux. Within a week, I developed a strong grasp on the basic commands that could be used on the terminal. I started using another Linux distribution, Kali Linux. Thus, I learned a lot about cyber security and ethical hacking. Deeply intrigued with these fields, I undertook in-depth research on them. The internship was useful to learn how real
The reason I decided to pursue a career in accounting is because I have always been interested in the business world and accounting is considered a basic tool of business. I have worked for small and large business firms; also in private and public sectors which helped me develop a strong linking with the industry as a whole and solidified my interest in accounting.
