We don’t often think of an adventure as therapeutic, but often times that’s exactly what we seek in them. We want a little slice of peace, a pause from our problems. To pursue adventure is to pursue that old thing that was around before there were jobs and social roles. It is exploration, the walk. Sometimes, even if we map it out, our adventure has no goals. It can be just a simple walk, the rest from pressure that movement gives us. We can travel around the world, or we can travel to work or the store. You’re daily commute is different every time even if you follow the same path every time.

I was inspired to give some tips on how to walk away your problems when I saw a trailer for the movie, Wild. In it, Reese Witherspoon’s character walks a thousand miles in the wilderness. It seems that she has a lot of problems in the film, so I’m not saying your walk has to be such an extreme adventure, but you do have to start walking. Here are some tips on how to have that walk be therapeutic:

Keep your attention to what’s going on beyond ground level. Don’t get me wrong, there are so many interesting things happening on the ground, but they are best appreciated when you squat down and really investigate them. With your attention elsewhere, you may step in something yucky like a puddle or dog poop. That’s okay, don’t let a little dog dodo ruin your day. It’ll come off with a hose, stick, or if you walk some more. It’s just an event along your trip, not a reason for ending your nice walk and make cleaning your shoes a top priority (unless it smells that
