According to Tom Freston, American businessman and author, "A career path is rarely a path at all. A more interesting life is usual a more crooked, winding path of missteps, luck and vigorous work. It is almost always a clumsy balance between the things you try to make happen and the things that happen to you."
My pharmacy career started when I began working as a pharmacy technician at Rite Aid Pharmacy under the tutelage of a wonderful Pharmacist, who is unrivaled in his profession. When I began college, it was demanding juggling work and school, however, I persevered at work having believed that the more “hands-on experience” I received, the more beneficial it would be in the long run. I was tenacious in my determination to be steps ahead of the other pharmacy students in my classes.

The pharmacy was quite active and located near a major hospital. I assisted customers from all walks of life, handled rejected insurance claims, filled many prescriptions and detected prescription fraud. Reflecting upon my three years there, I take pride in knowing that I handled the workload extremely well with grace and efficiency. Working in that busy store was the best “hands on” experience; having acquired the greatest knowledge and training that a young student of pharmacy could have endeavored.
With practically a drugstore on every corner, pharmacists play such a significant role in the healthcare field. They have countless responsibilities, including checking for drug interactions, answering queries about medications and the effects thereof, and operating above and beyond to ensure the health and well-being of their patients.
There is no doubt that the physician is significant, however, the pharmacist is invaluable for their ability to detect doctor’s occasional medication dosage, or instructional inaccuracies, which I have experienced first hand at
Pharmacists and technicians provide patients with safe and accurate medication in a timely manner. This is not a task for pharmacists or technicians alone; it is a task that requires both personnel in order to be accomplished.
Pharmacists have a very tedious job because it requires a lot of attention to detail. Pharmacists dispense drugs and provide information to the patients about medication. Not only do they provide information to patients about side effects, but also they inform physicians of the ever-changing selection of drugs and dosage. Weighing, measuring, mixing drugs, finding the identity and purity, and strength of medications is also an important part of the job. Pharmacists must be sure not to dispense drugs that will have a negative reaction to the other medications that the patient may already be taking. Pharmacists work in clean, well-lighted, and well-ventilated areas. They work with dangerous materials and sterile pharmaceutical products, which require them to wear gloves and masks. Many full time, salaried pharmacists work at least about forty hours per week. Community pharmacists research and dispense information and help for diabetes, asthma, smoking cessation, and high blood pressure....

I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Being part of this program gives one the opportunity to gain an excellent experience in working and collaborating with various health care providers in the ward. But more importantly, it facilitates a practical environment in dealing more closely with patients. Hence, it helps to provide the ultimate health care services to patients. Also, it permits me to carry on gaining different knowledge, skills, and values in addition to those I have already developed during my undergraduate studies. My interest in being a clinical pharmacist was first aroused during my SPEP rotation in the hospital setting where I was really impressed with the role of clinical pharmacists who provide a consistent process of patient care with healthcare teams to maintain the appropriateness, effectiveness and safety of the medication use. Unlike a pharmacist, a clinical pharmacist has a more diversified responsibilities and closeness to direct patient care. Moreover, provides
“Don’t you worry, I’ll make sure we will get everything sorted out for you,” spoked the pharmacist to an overwhelmed patient. This was my first day shadowing a pharmacist at the UC Davis Medical Center during my winter break from college. I witnessed my shadowing pharmacist patiently consulted this patient on multiple medications, ensuring he followed the instructions with his take home prescriptions before discharging from the hospital. Over the course of this shadowing experience, I observed how pharmacists collaborated with doctors to provide the best pharmaceutical care and helped facilitate smooth discharge process. I was amazed at their extensive knowledge of not just pharmaceutical drugs but also on different disease states, social
Pharmacists have training and expertise in medication therapy as well as patient care capabilities to assess and respond to patients’ health care and drug-related needs. Pharmacists are important members of the health care team. Pharmacists are well accepted by general people as healthcare personnel who provide knowledge about medication to patient (Perepelkin, 2011) but they also acquire knowledge and training to asses and respond to patients’ healthcare and drug related need. So prescribing is a logical extended role of pharmacist. It is assumed that medicine and dentistry professions dominate the prescribing activity but some other health care professionals such as optometrists, podiatrists, midwives, and nurse practitioners have been granted prescribing rights (Sketris, 2009). It is suitable for pharmacist to expand their professional role by adopting prescribing because they have skill and knowledge to initiate, monitor and adjust drug therapy and develop patient-centered care. As a result to an expanded scope of pharmacy practice, pharmacists in several Canadian, American, and British jurisdictions can prescribe medications (Tonna, Stewart & McCaig, 2008).
Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. Out of the many careers that one would opt to pursue, Pharmacy has stood out as the career that will enable me serve the society more directly and have a real impact in the quality of peoples’ lives by touching their health. In addition, I love a career that is challenging and one that I will be involved in even in old age. In this case, Pharmacy offers me this opportunity. My interest in Pharmacy has also developed from my personal health experiences and becoming aware of its expansiveness. Every time I have had to take medicine to cure an illness, I have become more interested to know how drugs are made and how the drug components work in the human body to alleviate pain and restore health. I desire to pursue a career in Pharmacy so as to gain practical experience in these aspects of research.
Ultimately I decided that a career in Pharmacy was perhaps the best way for me to utilize my talents, while at the same time meet my passionate desire to make the world a better place. What better way to help people than to give them medicine? From that point onward my decisions have been geared towards achieving my goal of becoming a Pharmacist. I realized that going to college for 7 or 8 years to achieve my dream was going to be a very expensive proposition. So I took as many AP and community college classes as possible to lessen the financial burden on myself and my parents. Luckily one of the colleges that had a Pharmacy School that I applied to also offered me a
When you ask people what you think when word “pharmacist” come to your mind? They often say pharmacist have to deal with variety of legal drugs. From my personal opinion, when I hear the word “Pharmacist”, I think of helping others. This inspiration came from my Health Science class I took in twelve grade. Until senior year of my high school, I did not know what I wanted to be. But it all changed, after my first shadowing experience at pharmacist station. There I learn about what exactly the pharmacist career is about, what are some of the equipments used in the field and how I can contribute the knowledge I receive here to help others.
The importance of the becoming a pharmacist should not be about what the career can give a person in monetary value or the amount of accolades one receives. Instead, the career should be about saving and improving human lives and serving the public. Pharmacists keep people healthy, make them feel better, and try to help the public live longer and happier lives as long as possible. From small infant children to the elderly, everyone needs pharmaceutical care. Sometimes it can be a matter of life and death if medication is not available to the public. Pharmacy as a career would be a wise decision if a person could withstand the amount of education the profession entails.

Through the blessing of having two parents as practicing pharmacists, I decided early on that I would pursue the career of pharmacy and attempt to help patients like my parents had done before me.
During my senior year in high school, I started an internship at Walgreens Pharmacy in Brownsville, Texas. This was a unique opportunity for me to find out if I would like to have a career as a pharmacist. So far, not only have I learned about my interest in pharmacy, but I have also learned from Dr. Leonard, one of the pharmacists at Walgreens. Even though I have made many mistakes as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee, Dr. Leonard always motivated me to do better the next time and stay positive. He always has a smile when he is working and looks forward to helping others. As a result of his qualities, Dr. Leonard assists everyone work easier together because there are never arguments. Firstly, the main role of a pharmacist is to dispense medicines to their patients according to the prescription given. Before this, they have to ensure that they delivering the right drug, the strength and dosage of the medicine are appropriate, as well as ensuring the medication is safety and can work effectively in the human body. They can also give advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle, conduct health and wellness screenings, provide immunizations, and oversee the medications given to their patients. Furthermore, a pharmacist must pay close attention to the prescription they fill and give to their patients. They should be sure the prescription won’t interact negatively with other drugs a patient is taking, or any past or previous medical conditions the patient has. Next, they will instruct the patient on how and when to take the prescribed medicine, any potential side effects, and answer any additional question the patient may have. Other than dealing with prescriptions, pharmacists will complete insurance forms and communicate with insurance companies to ensure patients obtain the medicines they need. Lastly, pharmacists will oversee the work of their pharmacy technicians and any interns they may have. A prescription may be filled by a pharmacy technician, but must be checked by the pharmacist before being given to a patient. Pharmacists’ tasks may also vary depending on where they work. For example, clinical pharmacists working is hospitals or clinical setting will sped less time dispensing prescriptions, and more time going on rotations, overseeing the dosage and timing of medications to patients, and conducting medical tests. On the other hand,
