Slavery is not a forgotten tragedy of the past. It still happens to this very hour, but people refuse to believe the worst. Although it’s a misfortune and is morally wrong, by no means should we dismiss the fact this this world is not perfect. Earlier this month CNN reported that migrants and refugees (both men and women) are stuck in Libya being sold into slavery or prostitution against their will. Italy helped with Libyan Coast Guards to smuggle vessels of migrants to Europe. The vulnerable population was up to about 400,000 to 1 million migrants. The buyers of the slaves sell them to slavery when the warehouse overflow run out of money to pay smugglers.
Once CNN camera footage of a human auction in Libya was released on the
news, there was an overall concerned reaction from international Organizations who wanted to provide transportation to help send them back to their home countries. This uprise caught many people’s attention especially celebrities. Because most celebrities are wealthy they can choose to aid others in need. A specific celebrity is a former soccer player Samuel Eto’o, with intentions to provide, chartered a plane to fly migrants back home. He refused to accept the claim he he made Wednesday and toold his countrymen to “use this time to prevent other brothers from being deprived of their dignity.” With an opinionated more than a factual approach, Donald Trump’s careless and apathetic concern towards the situation in Libya draws me to the conclusion that he needs to be better at his job as a president. While being in such a dominant and powerful position, one should not post on social media that CNN International is reporting “Fake News” and they “represent our nation to the WORLD very poorly” There are many ways to help Libya as a whole and the individuals being forced into slavery. By supporting the International Organization of Migrants, they can be protected in the country. You could help right now by donating anti-slavery organizations, like Free the Slaves, End Slavery Now, and the Polaris Project.
Saiba Haque Word Count: 1347 HUMANITIES 8 RECONSTRUCTION UNIT ESSAY Slavery was a problem that had been solved by the end of the Civil War. Slavery abused black people and forced them to work. The Northerners didn’t like this and constantly criticized Southerners, causing a fight. On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Lincoln to free all the slaves in the border states. “
As victim count continues to rise, its difficult to see how such great numbers of men, women and children are bought and sold every year. Trafficking can be found in many forms, including: prostitution, slavery, or forced labor (Harf and Lombardi, 2014). It wasn’t until the 1980’s that international human trafficking became globally noticed. With the lack of government intervention and control in several nations, and the free trade market, slavery once again became a profitable industry (Harf and Lombardi, 2014). As previously mentioned, easier movement across nations borders is one of the outcomes of globalization. It is also what makes human trafficking so easy today. It is estimated that about 20.9 million people are victims across the entire globe (United Nations Publications, 2012); trafficking accounts for 32 billion dollars in generated profit globally (Brewer, n.d). 58 percent of all human trafficking was for the purpose of sexual exploitation, and of this 55-60 percent are women (United Nations Publications,
The film “Slavery by another name" is a one and a half hour documentary produced by Catherine Allan and directed by Sam Pollard, and it was first showcased by Sundance Film Festival in 2012. The film is based on Douglas Blackmonbook Slavery by Another Name, and the plot of the film revolves around the history and life of African Americans after Emancipation Proclamation; which was effected by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, for the purpose of ending slavery of African Americans in the U.S. The film reveals very brutal stories of how slavery of African Americans persisted in through forced labor and cruelty; especially in the American south which continued until the beginning of World War II. The film brings to light one of my upbringing
In Colonial America indentured slavery happen gradually. The colony of Virginia was one place the “terrible transformation” took place. There were Africans and poor whites that came from English working class, black and whites worked side by side in the fields. They were all indentured servants as servants they were fed and housed. After their time was served, they were given “freedom dues,” with that came a piece of land and supplies. Black and whites became free. The English would not enslave non-Christians slaves; they could be set freed by converting to Christianity (PBS Online, nd).
Abolitionism in the US was the movement before and during the Civil War to end slavery. Abolitionism was a successful attempt to end people trading slaves and to free them. Most abolitionists thought that keeping slaves and torturing them was a sin and was wrong, because some masters didn't treat them as humans should be treated. Many different important figures helped this movement such as speakers like Frederick Douglass, Wendell Phillips, and Lucy Stone. William Garrison also was a big activist, Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation, Dred Scott and his famous court case, and former slave, Harriet Tubman also creating the Underground Railroad. Women were involved in the movement too, from the beginning to end. They joined as organizers and
With little awareness and some sensitivity to the situation, some genuine perseverance slaves can be reused (Bales et al., 2009 Soodalter, 2009). This is not wishful thinking, it happens with enough frequency to account for about one-third of all slaves rescued in the last few years. There are concerned citizens out there that are involved in these rescues who often are called Good Samaritans. The only thing that differentiates them from the public is that they have recognized that someone needs help and have taken action. The question is what makes a Good Samaritan? At the most basic level it is the openness to the possibility that something seems not quite right (Bales et al., 2009 Soodalter, 2009). People look deeply into America’s clumsy response to modern slavery shows that some basic ideas still need serious thought. Human trafficking cases are difficult and unresolved in that it is hard to determine who is and who is not trafficking the victims (Bales et al., 2009 Soodalter,
Slavery was one of the main reasons why America was divided because the north allowed African Americans to be “free” and have equal rights compared to the south, who were born into slavery. It started to become threating to the south since the power would be unbalance when Missouri was issued to be a free state in 1819 but then wasn’t passed by congress. Year later the Missouri compromise was in placed because it would eventually led to evenly balance the power between the free and slave state which would made Missouri a slave state and Maine(part of Massachusetts) into a free state; also, slavery would be excluded above the latitude of 36, 30. When slavery started to become problematic, the idea became an issue for the northern churches and
Every day women, children, and even men are kidnapped, taken from their families, and forced into free labor and sexual exploitation. According to a new report from the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, as many as 9,298 cases of human trafficking have been reported in the past five years, but these are only the instances in which it has been reported. Furthermore, the report also shows that from December 7th, 2007 to December 31st, 2012, cases of human trafficking were reported in all 50 states. Just how many more are under the radar? One of the definitions given for slavery is the state or condition of being a slave; a civil relationship whereby one person has absolute power over another and controls his life, liberty, and fortune.
As Abraham Lincoln once said, “Those who deny freedom from others, deserve it not for themselves.” However, his statement was directed to the slavery that took place in the 1800s. That slavery involved African Americans that did not have any say in whether they would work or not. They were born into slavery, and they were sold from slave owner to slave owner. This is referred to as olden-day slavery. People today seem oblivious to the fact that slavery still exists today just because the way slavery used to be is not common anymore, just in racial or religious parts of Africa (Meyer, page 8). Modern-day slavery, however, is considered to be so secretive and so “under the radar” that most first-world countries have no idea what is going on
Majority of human trafficking are worldwide which involves the transportation of victims from Africa, South and Eastern Asia, Central and South America, Russia and other developing countries to developed countries in Asia, the Middle East, North America and central and southeastern countries of the European continent. It is the Asia-Pacific region where a majority of the world’s forced laborers come from followed by Africa. The Asia-Pacific region contributes 56% or 11.7 million victims, while Africa accounts 18% or 3.7 million victims of human trafficking. The meltdown of the global economy in the recent times has given rise to an increase in contemporary slavery. About 26 percent of modern slaves are children below the age of 18 years, out of which girls are the victims of child prostitution and
Indentured slaves, were people who’s hopes and dreams which were to go to the new land and live a free life. Were brutally shattered by the cold reality, that they weren’t. Every day reminded that they were nothing. These people were some of the most abused people in America. But through them, we shaped history.
Thousands of foreigners are smuggled across national borders as forced labour in factories, farms, and brothels. Many are forced to become victims of human trafficking through force or the false promise of the American dream. The threat of human trafficking presently is that it deprives people of their human rights, it is a global health risk, and fuels the growth of organized crimes, such as sex crimes. Within this paper I will discuss my research on human trafficking and the victims’ deprivation of human rights. In order to so, I will synthesize three relevant sources on this topic, discuss additional questions that should be addressed when further researching this issue from a peace studies perspective, and outline a specific proposal for future research.

The word “slavery” brings back horrific memories of human beings. Bought and sold as property, and dehumanized with the risk and implementation of violence, at times nearly inhumane. The majority of people in the United States assumes and assures that slavery was eliminated during the nineteenth century with the Emancipation Proclamation. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth; rather, slavery and the global slave trade continue to thrive till this day. In fact, it is likely that more individuals are becoming victims of human trafficking across borders against their will compared to the vast number of slaves that we know in earlier times. Slavery is no longer about legal ownership asserted, but instead legal ownership avoided, the thought provoking idea that with old slavery, slaves were maintained, compared to modern day slavery in which slaves are nearly disposable, under the same institutionalized systems in which violence and economic control over the disadvantaged is the common way of life. Modern day slavery is insidious to the public but still detrimental if not more than old American slavery.
The first most profitable criminal enterprise in the world is cross border organized crime. This is an estimated $2.1 trillion dollar a year industry. Perhaps surprising, the second most profitable criminal enterprise in the world is human exploitation (Roman 2). This is an estimated $32-$115 billion dollar a year industry. In layman’s terms, human exploitation is simply slavery. Slavery is a huge problem in the world currently, but it is not a new one. It has been around since Biblical times. People from all over the world can be shipped into the United States, even right into the ports of Wilmington, North Carolina. Not only can women be shipped here, but women from our community can be trafficked as well. The community does not realize how
