In The Iliad by Homer it foretells a story of a war that took place for nine years and shows how selfish acts can lead to unforgettable outcomes. The book is written and told based off of the muse’s inspiration to Homer the narrator of the story. In this book Homer describes the muses story based on his point of view as he was not there to live the event. Homer tells the story in a poetic manner so that it can be memorable and easy to understand. He uses the inspiration of the muse and his personality to embody these characters as he tells the story. To keep the audience intrigued by the story Homer utilizes common human faults and aspects such as, a person selfish acts, violence and death, and sorrow and sympathy for the story to come alive. …show more content…

The Iliad starts off with a vengeful father wanting to have his daughter back and in result bringing plagues and diseases to the camp. In order for this to have stopped Agamemnon had to give up his prize possession and take Achilles prize as his own. Homer points out how Achilles a main character in the book is prideful, selfish, and vengeful by stating, “But now he seized Briseis ' heavenly charms, And of my valour 's prize defrauds my arms, Defrauds the votes of all the Grecian train;63 And service, faith, and justice, plead in vain.” (Homer 25) This is Achilles speaking to his mother Thetis, saying he has done so much for Agamemnon and he goes to embarrass me like this and take my prize position I think not. This goes to show a selfish act, although he might have won Briseis, Achilles needed to realize that in order to save the country this is what needed to be done. Achilles selfish act resulted him in being vengeful as well because now he does not want to continue the war which results in many fatalities throughout the book. In doing so, the audience can understand the characters pain and growth to certain situations. In many stories at times the narrator wants to build up the conflicts so that the audience can see the character in a true life state showing their compassion to certain outcomes. In The Iliad, Homer describes how Achilles suffers his friends death, “He, deeply groaning—"To this cureless grief, Not even the Thunderer 's favour brings relief. Patroclus—Ah!—say, goddess, can I boast A pleasure now? revenge itself is lost;”(Homer 232) by doing so Homer emphasizes Achilles regret for sending Patroclus to fight instead of himself. Now, broken down over his friend’s death brings a climatic seen in the story because Achilles is known for vengeance. This goes to show that when someone is deep in pain that sometimes the person will do anything to revenge the fallen. Homer also introduces a side of Achilles that audience probably wouldn’t have thought could’ve happen. In the remorse for Hector’s death, Priam, Hectors father begs and pleads for his son back, “These words soft pity in the chief inspire, Touch 'd with the dear remembrance of his sire. The old man 's cheek he gently turn 'd away. Now each by turns indulged the gush of woe; And now the mingled tides together flow: A father one, and one a son deplore: and now his friend.
