Human ignorance plays a huge role in a tragedy. Without ignorance everyone
would know what is happening and the problem would never occur. This is especially
relevant with Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet". There are many cases within the
play that show that the characters are ignorant of what is happening somewhere else. The
characters either does not know that something is occurring or the character does not
have the whole truth. That is what makes the whole story interesting.
One example of ignorance in Romeo and Juliet is the scene where Tybalt notices
Romeo and a Capulet party. To be prejudice a person must be ignorant. Tybalt thinks to
himself that since Romeo is a Montague he will cause trouble. A few quotes from the
play will prove that Tybalt is ignorant.
Tybalt: 'Tis he that villain Romeo.
Tybalt: It fits when such a villain is a guest. I'll not endure him.
Tybalt: Why, uncle, 'tis a shame.
All of these lines are said to Tybalt's uncle, Lord Capulet, by Tyblat. Right from the start
Tybalt says that Romeo is a villain, a trouble maker. He states that he will not stand for
such a horrible person to be at the party. Tybalt feels that it is a shame.
Being ignorant also means to not know the whole truth. The scene where Juliet
takes the magic drug and dies is an example of this. When the nurse goes to wake Juliet
the next morning she is shocked to find Juliet dead on the day she was suppose to marry
Paris. What the rest of the Capulets do not know is that Juliet will awake later at her
grave. Here are a few lines from the play that show that they do not know that Juliet will
awake.
Lady Capulet: O me, O me! My child, my only life! Revive, look up, or I will die
with thee! Help, help! Call help.
Nurse: She's dead, deceased; she's dead! Alack the day!
Those lines would not be said if they knew that she would awake later.
One major scene which is filled with ignorance is the last one. This scene is
where Romeo seeks his dead love. When Romeo sees Juliet dead he instantly falls apart
emotionally. Romeo ends up killing himself a moment before Juliet wakes up. When
Juliet wakes up and finds Romeo dead she kills herself. The result of the ignorance of the
two lovers is that they die. If Romeo received Friar Laurence's message first he would
have known the whole truth.
Juliet strategizes her disastrous plan and worries, “How if, when I am laid into the tomb, I wake before the time that Romeo come to redeem me?” (Lines 30-32 of Act Four, Scene Three). Juliet is desperate to see Romeo, ergo she plans to fake her death. Her thoughts of Romeo finding her lifeless foreshadows their future. Romeo is deprived of the news of Juliet’s real state of health, therefore he says, “Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight. O mischief, thou art swift to enter the thoughts of desperate men!” (Lines 34-36 of Act Five, Scene One). Once again, Romeo’s perception is only focused on Juliet. His mental instability leads him to think Paris is in the way obtaining true happiness, thus he slays him. Romeo acquires poison, stands beside Juliet, and states, “Here’s to my love! (Drinks.) O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.” (Lines 119-120 of Act Five, Scene Three). Romeo observes Juliet’s body and determines that he should die beside her. Juliet wakes to his lifeless body, and determines she should commit suicide, as well. Romeo’s foolish decisions lead to the death of himself and
When asked by Benvolio to make peace in the streets, Tybalt bluntly responds,” talk of peace, I hate the word. As I hate hell all Montagues.” This is the attitude of Tybalt throughout the play. He believes he is doing all for the best and uses violence as his tool. He gets angry at the ball with Romeo being there, “villain as a guest,” and believes it best to defend his family’s honor by later taking revenge. When Tybalt finds Romeo, he thinks it best to fight him and when he ends up killing Mercutio he believes he has done his duty by causing Romeo the same hurt he has brought Tybalt, “the injuries that thou hast done me.”
Tybalt Capulet’s hot-headedness can be shown through the words, actions, and thoughts that occur throughout the play. In act three, scene one, Tybalt states “Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries that thou hast done me; therefore turn and draw.” He says this speaking to the enemy son of the Montague family, Romeo, even though Romeo has done nothing to harm Tybalt. This proves Tybalt's unforgivingness and habit of finding any excuse to fight. In act one, scene five, Tybalt vows that “Patience perforce with willful choler meeting makes my flesh tremble in their different greeting. I will withdraw; but this intrusion shall, now seeming sweet, convert to bitter gall.” This is another example of Tybalt's unforgivingness, but also his tendency to hold grudges that are the cause of many of his unreasonable fights.
Romeo's immense love for Juliet will eventually lead to the fall of himself. Death lingers throughout the play between Romeo and his love, Juliet. In conclusion, when Juliet is thinking about Romeo she says, "Give me Romeo; and when he shall die / Take him and cut him out in little stars, / And he will make the face of heaven so fine / That all the world will be in love with night," (lll,ii,21-25). This suggests that in the play Romeo will end up dying and Juliet will be there to see it. Juliet prophesizes over many topics in the play and in the end they become true.

and Juliet died at the end of the play and also both parents of the
As already shown, both Romeo and Juliet are horrified to discover that they were family enemies. Despite of this, they both choose to devote their love for eachother. Given this point, it is unrequited love that brings Romeo and Juliet together. But this also means that they would have to get over the fact that their families hate each other. This eventually leads them to forgiving the rival family for all the hateful acts that have occurred against one another. This is not the only forgiveness that is experienced in this play. Tybalt is a Montague with a fiery attitude. After catching Romeo at a party he was not supposed to be at, Tybalt had it out for Romeo. Just after Romeo and Juliet’s wedding, Tybalt comes looking for him wanting to fight. Romeo does not want to fight because he now loves Tybalt since he is family to him, but neither Tybalt or anyone else knows this reason. Quickly Mercutio steps in and tells Tybalt that he will fight him in honour of Romeo. Sadly this leads to the death of Mercutio. Romeo is angry and in need of revenge, which creates an intense fight between Tybalt and Romeo. Romeo wins this battle, killing Tybalt. He leaves in a hurry, only to discover that he would be banished from Verona. The death of Tybalt is absolutely devastating to Juliet. Her cousin was murdered by her husband. But she did not hesitate to forgive Romeo, she did so right away. She knew that Romeo had a reason for this incident and decides to

The major climax of the play comes when the friar gives Juliet a potion that will make it seem as though she has died, when in fact she is alive the whole time. While in Mantua, Romeo mistakenly hears that Juliet has actually died and he goes to lay by her side. Just as he takes a vile of poison and dies Juliet awakens to find her love lying dead at her side. She cannot fathom living in a world without Romeo so she takes his sword and ends her own life.
