In Fahrenheit 451 Montag, challenges his society inwardly. He ponders the different aspects of life while talking to Clarise, who indirectly influences him to rebel. At first, Montag stows away books due to his curiosity; however, after meeting Clarisse he begins to read them. Clarrise is a young girl who outwardly does not conform to the government; she greatly influences Montag's shift as a character into becoming more intelligent and understanding of the brainwashing the government enforces. Ray Bradbury utilizes Montag as a character and his reluctance to conform internally in order to address issues in the society regarding ignorance. He realizes the effect technology has on their relationship. How obsessed Mildred is with technology. How she loves the parlor family more than she loves Montag. They are both so caught up in technology that they can’t even remember when they met, bringing more tension. When Millie prioritizes her show over Montag, he gives her a reality check and says “Millie? Does the white clown love you” (Bradbury 77). When she doesn’t respond, he then asks “does your “family” love you?”, referring to the parlor family who isn’t real. Montag realizes the sad reality of his relationship, Millie cares more about the parlor family than she does about him. Painfully, Montag becomes more distant from Mildred.
