Kurt Cobain once said, “punk is musical freedom. It’s saying, doing and playing what you want.” (Hiebert). Iggy Pop did exactly this. Many people have even dubbed him, the Godfather of Punk. Growing up in Michigan, Iggy was in many bands, before sticking with the Stooges. After seeing a Doors concert, he decided to form the Stooges, as a serious attempt at music. With a whole catalog of music, not really received commercially, but well received among future musicians, he helped get the ball rolling on many music movements. Before he was Iggy Pop, he was James Osterberg. Born on April 21, 1947, he grew up in a trailer park in Ypsilanti, Michigan. As a teen, he played drums for a band called the Iguanas. James formed many bands throughout the 60’s, changing styles as much as he formed bands. After attending the University of Michigan, for a few years, he …show more content…
dropped out and moved to Chicago. In 1967, James came back to the University of Michigan to see the Doors perform. “So, here’s this guy, out of his head on acid, dressed in leather with his hair all oiled and curled. The stage was tiny and it was really low. It got confrontational. I found it really interesting. I loved the performance but the music sounded terrible because they didn’t have the sound system together. They had a really unique style and it wasn’t easy for them to sound good live, at first. Part of me was like, ‘Wow, this is great. He’s really pissing people off and he’s lurching around making these guys angry.’... It was sort of the case of, ‘Hey, I can do that.’ There really was some of that in there.” (Wright). If it wasn’t for that concert, Iggy Pop would have never existed. With the inspiration of the concert, James set off to make a sound for himself.
James formed the Psychedelic Stooges, taking the stage name and persona of Iggy Stooge. He took the name Iggy from his early band, the Iguanas. The Psychedelic Stooges played their debut show on Halloween of 1967. “Iggy contorted his shirtless torso, let out primal screams, rubbed peanut butter and raw steaks over his body, gouged his skin with broken glass, and dove into the crowd (a full two decades before stage diving became the norm) while the Stooges played raw, basic, hard rock & roll. Some thought the band was the embodiment and the future of rock; others were appalled.” (RollingStone). Two years later, the Stooges, after dropping psychedelic from their name, released their first self-titled album. They did this with the help of John Cale, from the Velvet Underground, as their producer. The Stooges went on to release their second album, Fun House, the following year. With David Bowie as their producer, the Stooges released Raw Power in 1973. These albums would go on to inspire many musicians and help create many music
scenes. Listening to Iggy and the Stooges is one thing, but seeing them is unbelieveable. Iggy Pop is known for his wild stage antics. Often he played shows shirtless and covered in blood. He sometimes cut himself on stage. Iggy was also the inventor of the stage dive. Iggy would swing from ropes, and even flash and fight members of the audience. When asked if he planned out all his crazy acts, in an interview, this is what he had to say, “Some of them I just do by the moment because I just want to do it right then and there. If I am on a twelve-foot stage and the barrier is eight feet away, and has spikes on it, and the people on the other side are all crazy, then I don’t stage dive at all. We have one particular song that we do, it’s ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ and because it is our oldest, and most very, very memorable number, I do it. I also do it on that song because I push so hard on the first two verses that I can’t think of anything to do by the time the guitar solo comes around. When the guitar solo comes, I tend to do a stage dive to go with the solo.” (Wright). If you saw Iggy live, you would see a display of pure, raw, unfiltered emotions. Iggy Pop’s dissent caused musical revolutions. Iggy’s wild antics and abrasive music helped influence the punk music scene of the 70’s and 80’s and even the grunge scene of the 90’s. Although the Stooges albums weren’t commercial successes, they served as building blocks for the hard, abrasive punk sound. “Punk rock is a word used by dilettantes and heartless manipulators about music that takes up the energies, and the bodies, and the hearts, and the souls, and the time, and the minds of young men who give what they have to it… What sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise is in fact the brilliant music of a genius- myself. And that music is so powerful that it’s quite beyond my control, and when I’m in the grips of it I don’t feel pleasure and I don’t feel pain, either physically or emotionally.” (Heibert). Many musicians, from the Sex Pistols to Nirvana, cite Iggy as their influence. Without Iggy Pop, rock and roll would be completely different. Iggy Pop pushed music and performing to it’s limits, in a time where rock and roll was still new, inspiring many young musicians to go out and create. When he was young, iggy played in many bands, trying to figure out a sound of his own. His life and career were forever changed after the Doors performance. After releasing a few albums, they became the inspirations for punks to look towards. Iggy Pop changed the history of rock and roll forever.

Growing up I remember my mom turning the music up whenever she heard a good song. The only genre, she listened to was country so I grew up loving country music. I now turn the music up whenever I hear a song Luke Bryan wrote because his music is so good. Growing up Luke Bryan was a normal child, but over the 20 or more years, so many devastating things have happened to his family that are hard for Bryan and his family to get over.

Billy Joel was born on May 9, 1949 in Bronx, New York. He moved at the age of four to a small town on Long Island. This is where at the ripe age of four he discovered the art of music. Originally a classical music fan, Billy Joel honed his skills with classical piano training. This undoubtedly has had a major influence on his life and certainly his music. Growing up Joel was a big fan of such greats as Ray Charles, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Otis Reading. He was greatly persuaded into a career of music when he saw the Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. Amusingly Joel's first band was inspired by the uncanny opportunity to meet girls. The band was called The Echoes, but this was not the best of times for Joel because his parents were involved in a messy divorce, which included serious financial shortcomings. Joel even began working professional music gigs at night to help support his mother. Joel's schoolwork suffered a little and he began missing school way too often. He was subsequently not allowed to graduate with his high school class due to the number of absences. After high school Joel immediately joined a very popular band called The Hassels for which he recorded two albums with. Within two years Joel was on to a new band which he named Attila, and featured heavy metal drummer Jon Small who he played with during his time with The Hassels. Despite the previous release of two albums Joel still needed to bring in more money so he worked many music related jobs and gigs. He even wrote a rock and roll criticism piece in a weekly column for a magazine.

The subject of this writing, is on a man who changed music; a man on the level of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison. This individual is Kurt Donald Cobain from the revolutionary grunge/rock band, Nirvana. While some people would never consider Cobain to hold a major role in the shaping of our music and culture today, they haven’t taken the time to look around. Many people overlook the fact that music played a huge role in the lives of Americans during the 90’s. Someday history books will probably
Did you know that Ozzy Osbourne came over sex, drug, and alcohol addiction. He did this by getting help from a lot of people.
The American rock band Nirvana impacted American culture and society by paving the way for the punk rock subculture into mainstream corporate America. Punk rock music stems from the rock genre but has its own agenda. The crux of punk rock is that it is a movement of the counterculture against the norms of society. Punk rock in itself is made up of a subculture of people who rejected the tameness of rock and roll music during the 1970s. (Masar, 2006, p. 8). The music stresses anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian ideas in its lyrics as well as scorns political idealism in American society. Before Nirvana unintentionally made punk rock a multi-million dollar commercialized genre of music, underground rock paved the way for the punk rock genre by creating core values that punk rockers drew upon.
Imagine working your whole life and being so dirt poor you struggle to live in a cruddy apartment. Depending on how rich you started out being, and how popular you became, that’s how it was in the sixties and still is today (although it’s a little better) in the music industry. Iggy Pop is a musician and song writer from the sixties. He was the lead vocalist in The Stooges band and has done solo work recently, as well as been a radio jockey for the past few years, having his own air time with the Iggy Confidential. He is from Michigan, but he works in London now. Jim Osterberg, more commonly known as Iggy Pop, was asked to do a speech at the John Peel Lecture in 2014; in his speech there, he used flashbacks and allusions to get his message across: Capitalist societies, like here in the USA, hurt and continue to hurt the musicians and song writers in the music industry.
Pop music began to take on a serious art form. Rock stars influenced fashion in a way like never before. The Beatles began the British invasion with pop culture. They were fashion icons and many copied their long hair. Others copied the rebellious look of Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones). Rock stars began speaking on behalf of the younger generation and the media was all over them. By the end of the sixties, pop music was the main force in fashion. In Europe and America, "underground" music played a big part, with underground magazines, festivals, and groups during 1966-67. Drugs such as marijuana and hallucinogens like LSD were more widely used outside of a small circle of musicians and artists. Sounds of blues, jazz, rock, electronic, Indian, and classical had inspiration in psychedelic music. Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix were leaders of this long hair, drugs, and music scene. Other music such as be-bop jazz with the beatniks, the sounds of soul that flowed from the record company Motown, and folk for hippies also inspired the way of fashion.
While on their tour there they saw Damned and The Clash on the Fourth of July. The Sex Pistols had started before, but their music was based on The Ramones sound. Some of the better-known punk groups that followed - The Sex Pistols, The Clash, ect. would be the first ones to say that without The Ramones, the whole punk movement would never have happened, commented Spin magazine editor-in-chief Alan Light.... ...
