I chose to be a chef because cooking is something I love to do. When I’m cooking I feel so free. Another reason why I chose to be a chef is because a lot of my family members are great cooks. My dad is my role model in the kitchen because whatever he know about cooking he teaches me. A lot of what he learned came from my grandma who happens to be 92 years old. When I cook I like being creative I like making dishes that everyone can’t make. I love cooking exotic dishes that make people wonder what I put in my dish to make it so magnificent. As a chef in training I feel the need to learn as much as I can. The more you know the better you’ll be at what you do in life. Cooking has been around since the beginning of times. My first ever hearing of the cooking of food is the 1st Thanksgiving when the Native Americans and Pilgrims ate together. If you think about it cooking may have first started when fire was discovered. Food is necessary for the body to survive so I’m pretty sure that they would find a way to cook food. Food has become a major part of the world. Different types of foods have made their way to America. I feel as long as you have people to feed food will be needed. I often just think how food came from something so simple to a dying need. It’s truly amazing to be a person that satisfies the hunger of another person by just mixing certain ingredients to satisfy taste. If it’s good then they will want more of what you have. The requirements of becoming a chef aren’t very difficult. You do have to have some training that will help you out. They have certificate programs that last a couple months and some earn 2yr. associate or 4yr. bachelor. Also hands-on training, in-class instruction in kitchen is needed. Food plays very vital role in maintaining proper health and also helps in prevention and cure of diseases. Good nutritive food makes health, but at the same time bad or unhealthy food gives rise to several diseases. Certain foods are also very good in helping your brain function properly. Previously to coming to Johnson and Wales I had an extremely limited pool of chefs that I have met and/or worked with. In my opinion the majority of these chefs did not have passion for what they do. After years in the industry, the struggles of life weather away their passion. However, once I arrived at Johnson and Wales I discovered chefs that weren’t just dispassionate husks of their former selves. The majority of the chefs here are focused on their passion and how they can achieve a little more every day. This has formed two kinds of chef’s in my mind; those who have lost focus on what is important, and those intrinsically motivated to work
Now that I have told you what has led me to this decision I would like to tell you exactly why I have chosen to become a teacher. I want to become a teacher not because of the salary nor because I want weekends and holidays off; rather, I want to become a teacher because I truly have a passion for making a difference in others lives. There are so many reasons I love to cook, cooking is one of those things that just comes naturally for me, and I think I inherited, because I can cook almost anything and nail it on the first try, much like my grandmother.
