Reading poetry, not only evokes feelings, it also triggers memories and past experiences. “The reader is paying attention to the images, feelings, attitudes, associations that the words evoke in him” (Rosenblatt, 34) We create our own meaning from a literary work of art when we relate to it; when we can bring our own personal experiences to the table. It’s all about the relationship between the reader and the literary work of art. This is why the reader response criticism is so effective in order to interpret literary works of arts. It allows the reader to experience the work in whole different level. After all, “The poem is what the reader lives through under the guidance of the text and experiences as relevant to the text.” (38)

This is a non-traditional love poem. Neruda’s poem portrays the reality of love; it’s not always perfect or meant to be. More importantly, one must put himself/herself together and move on if necessary. From the start we notice the speakers speaking to us. “The reader finds it necessary to construct the ‘speaker’—the voice, the persona, the tone –as part of what he decodes from the text” (36) We may assume a man is our speaker, who expresses his love for a woman in a realistic way. The man uses metaphors and imagery to express his love for her. However, he lets her know that if she thinks about forgetting him, he will forget her first. However, the stanza starts off with “You know how this is: (3)” this means that the reader will feel related to the message about to be said. Then we experience the first imagery, “if I look/ at the crystal moon, at the red branch/of the SLOW autumn at my WINDOW” (4-6). As readers, we can imagine the speaker looking out his window in an autumn night thinking about his love. We can notice that the most simple things, such as nature, bring back the memory of his loved one. “if I touch/near the fire/the impalpable ash /or the WRINKLED body of the log,/everything carries me to you, (7-11)” These descriptions add to the imagery of the setting. We may picture the author sitting in his living room next to a fireplace. This type of setting feels like home; like the speaker is comfortable enough and at a relaxing place reflecting. The reader also perceives their passionate love. The speaker mentions touching the ashes near the fire. This may portray the risk of experiencing a passionate love; there is the possibility of getting hurt. As readers, we may understand his point if we draw back from our own past love experiences. There’s another imagery in the metaphor at the end of the stanza. “as if everything that exists,/aromas, light, metals,/were little boats/that sail/toward those isles of yours that wait for me. (12-16)” The speaker describes the senses of smell, sight, and touch as

Poetry is something that is to be read delicately and cautiously if one wanted to find meaning through the words. Readers have to be gentle and patiently ponder about what they are reading in order to find any significance in the poem. If someone is not patient with reading, they will not feel impacted by poetry and will not want to read it. In Billy Collins’, “Introduction to Poetry,” he uses figurative language to help readers see that the way to enjoy and understand poetry is by reading between the lines and being patient with how each individual relates to the readings.

In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like “ Theme for English B” and “Let American be American Again.”
Poetry is a versatile avenue from which waves or ripples can be made potentially. A writer of poetry has the ability to make their readers feel a while wide array of emotions and situations synonymous with the human condition. I, at first, was completely turned off to the idea of poetry at first because all I was exposed to early on by way of poetry were bland professions of love or lust or seemingly simple poems I was forced to process down to a fine word paste. Edgar Allan Poe was interesting, but it was a tad bit dry to me. But, after reading poems the Harlem Renaissance gave me a bit of hope for poetry. To me, the poetry written during that time period has a certain allure to it. They have serious depth and meaning that I, myself and empathize

New Criticism attracts many readers to its methodologies by enticing them with clearly laid out steps to follow in order to criticize any work of literature. It dismisses the use of all outside sources, asserting that the only way to truly analyze a poem efficiently is to focus purely on the words in the poem. For this interpretation I followed all the steps necessary in order to properly analyze the poem. I came to a consensus on both the tension, and the resolving of it.
Neruda begins his sonnet in a most unusual manner. He states in the first few lines ways in which he does not love his companion. He does not love her as if she were “the salt-rose, topaz, or arrow of carnations.” These are all examples of beautiful things that are to be admired. Each one is a bright and colorful breed of rose. The poem is not implying that this person is unattractive. Rather, it is simply stating the unimportance of her appearance in relation to his love for her. The beauty within her soul charms him. The narrator is completely captivated with this person. Neruda uses emotions to portray love in his poem. “Sonnet XVII” does not describe a love for someone who has done kind things or someone who has been there emotionally, mentally, and physically for another. It describes a love that is illogically based on intense affection alone.
My first and immediate explanation for the poem was an address from one lover to a loved one, where distance became a factor in their relationship. The lover has it far worse than the desired partner and the solitude builds nothing but longing for this person at a time when his love is the greatest. He says " What have I to say to you when we shall meet?... I am alone" with my head knocked against the sky”. He further asks, “How can I tell if I shall ever love you again as I do now?” There is uncertainty because he is wondering over the next encounter with his loved one. He says, “I lie here thinking of you” and is compelling when he wants the loved one to see him in the 5th stanza and what love is doing to his state of mind. He is hopeless and expresses it by asking questions he is unsure of, conveying his troubled state. Williams enforces imagery along with sound effects to demonstrate the despair of the man in a realm that is almost dreamlike with purple skies,spoiled colors, and birds. Stating he is alone and that his head collides with the sky may underline the man’s confusion. He also uses imagery in the “stain of love as it eats into the leaves”, and saffron horned branches, vivid and easy-to-imagine images that captivate the reader. The line stating “a smooth purple sky” and this stain which is “spoiling the colours of the whole world” easily formulate a very distinct picture. Through consonance words like “eats” and “smears with saffron” become fiercer in the eyes of this lover as they cancel out a “smooth sky”.
In the poem “A song of Despair” Pablo Neruda chronicles the reminiscence of a love between two characters, with the perspective of the speaker being shown in which the changes in their relationship from once fruitful to a now broken and finished past was shown. From this Neruda attempts to showcase the significance of contrasting imagery to demonstrate the Speaker’s various emotions felt throughout experience. This contrasting imagery specifically develops the reader’s understanding of abandonment, sadness, change, and memory. The significant features Neruda uses to accomplish this include: similes, nautical imagery, floral imagery, and apostrophe.
When reading or listening to poetry, the main objective for me is to feel moved. Happiness, longing, sadness are some of the feelings that can be achieved just by listening to others’ words. It is within these words that creates another world, or separates us from our own. Words all have a certain kind of attachment to them, so if used properly an author can stimulate a reader beyond belief.
