How would you like it if school started at nine? School should start at nine because it would give students more time to sleep, get ready, eat breakfast, and get on school on time. People may disagree because it would make students get out later and they would not be able to pick up their kids.They are incorrect because there are buses to take kids home, other students may be able to take them home, and most adults are off of work by the dismissal time. Furthermore many students do after school activities which may take up atleast and hour. First, many teenagers like to stay up late at night and do not get enough sleep for their bodies. As a result, teenagers would be more likely to not pay attention in class and get bad grades. Over half of the students do not get at least 8 hours of sleep. Meanwhile, a quarter of the students will fall asleep during class. Students also fall asleep while doing homework and oversleep resulting in them getting late to school. As a result of not getting enough sleep students that drive would have a higher risk of getting in a car accident. Teenagers that have barely gotten their drivers license would not have enough experience driving. Some students may have trouble balancing out their priorities. Many students think that their after school activities may be more important than their education. In that case, many adolescents decide to put homework last and end up not doing it. On the other hand, many students have trouble doing activities and getting school work done by the same day. School starting at nine would let students get homework done, have time for after school activities, and even get sleep. In addition, teachers would be able to grade papers and also get enough sleep. Why Schools Should Continue Starting at Eight Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.

Although this seems like a logical belief, it is not always the case. Students may have to nap to compensate for energy expended throughout the day. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, therefore, they would have a larger window of time to spend with their family after school, even with a later start time. Another opposing argument is that students would have less time to participate in extracurricular activities, but resolving that issue is simple. Messing with these sleep cycles in the long run and lead to sleep disorders. Research done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests teenagers 13-18 years old should regularly sleep 8-10 hours each night for a healthy sleep. The teens who do not get a good amount of sleep are more likely to suffer from mental conditions, smoking, illicit drugs, and alcohol use. ¨Not getting enough sleep is common among high school students and is associated with several health risks including being overweight, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, and using drugs, as well as poor academic performance.¨ (¨Schools Start Too Early¨). On an NBC news story, Hilton Head Island High School moved its start time and benefits were noticeable. Students had higher test score averages and grades improved throughout the school.A study done in 2008 published in the journal of clinical sleep, found car accident rates fell by 16.5% when students were more aware on the road, not having to wake up before 7 am.
I completely agree school work and cell phones have a major impact on the amount of sleep teenagers get. The amount of sleep teenagers are lacking is leading to depression, anxiety, and in some cases, suicide in high school and college students. There are many dangers caused by the lack of sleep in young adults. Also, sleep is a major part of growing a healthy body and performing your best at school and/or work.
Everyone has always hated getting up super early to go to school. As children get older they move to different schools, from elementary to middle to high school, and the start times get earlier. In elementary school it was never a problem getting up but getting older, it always got harder to get up and the days were always longer. Schools start so early in the morning that it is hard to focus and students tend to miss more of their earlier classes and attend all of their later classes. Schools everywhere should start later because it would benefit the students and teachers.
One drawback to later start times is the fact that school would end later. Since schools that start later still have the same number of hours in a day, they would in turn end later in the afternoon. In Dr. Michael Breus’ blog post, “Teens Need More Sleep Than You Think,” he states that teenagers are “wolves” or the chronotype that centers around going to sleep late. A chronotype is the time a person’s internal clock is set to at a given time in their life. Teenagers are a part of the chronotype that goes to bed later and wakes up later. Teenagers naturally go to bed at around 11:00 pm and need between eight and ten hours of sleep every night because of their chronotype. This means that going to school as early as 7:00, and waking up at 5:30, could lead to getting up to two and a half fewer hours of sleep than needed. This can have many harmful side effects. Also, it is simply hard to accomplish simple tasks early in the morning for both sleep deprived people, but also the wolf chronotype. Tasks that can be harder earlier in the morning can be as simple as speaking to other people or getting dressed, not to mention doing school work or driving. In fact, according to Dr. Robert Daniel Vorona from the Eastern Virginia Medical School, starting highs schools earlier can lead to an increase in driving related accidents. I’m pretty sure most people hate getting up super early in the morning to get to school. Am I right? Well I think it’s the worst. In my opinion, I think school should start later because it is better for a person's health and it’s better for students learning. One other reason why school should start later is because a lack of sleep has serious consequences. High schools should start no earlier than 8:30.

We are all used to the argument that people make that school should start at a later hour. Of course a lot of people want to sleep in, catch a few more Z’s. It sounds tempting. However, in the end pushing school to a later start time would cause more harm than good. I know all about the so called perfect all american family. Mom gets up early and makes breakfast for kids. She sends them off to school with a smile making sure they don’t forget their homework. Well let’s just say that not all of us live the all american dream. My mom has to be to work by 5 am. That means I am left to get my little sister ready to school, try and make breakfast, make sure the doors are all locked and somehow get to school on time. This doesn’t always work. Yesterday was my 5th tardy of the year. Starting school even a half hour later could make life a lot easier for some of us who are really trying.

Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
Teens should not have to struggle in school due to the lack of sleep early school start times cause. It is apparent that the lack of sleep is detrimental to the success of students. School all over the country have seen how the lack of sleep impacts the performance of students. Therefore, schools, primarily those that involve teens, should have school start later to help the students, schools, and society.
