Identity in E.L. Doctorow's Ragtime
Written almost thirty years ago, describing an age far removed from its own, E.L. Doctorow's novel Ragtime nevertheless explores issues of identity and ethnicity that still face America in spite of its lofty ideals of individualism and diversity. It displays for the reader a rich and hypnotic portrayal of the soul of immigrant America, yet still fails to avoid ethnic bias in certain subtle ways. Whether the lapses into feelings of cultural superiority originate from the purposeful portrayal of the characters Doctorow created or without the author's conscious prior awareness, a careful reading of the text will reveal them. In this way, these same assumptions and prejudices test our own. As Ragtime delineates between ethnic identities that are understood to be like children or animals and noble races that are simply misunderstood, it holds a clear mirror up to the reader's own assumptions of identity and ethnicity.
Within the first five pages of the novel, Ragtime sets the ethnic tone that saturates its narrative: that of two tragically misunderstood cultures in American life, the Negro and the "immigrant" (a term used to specifically describe immigrants of a European or Eastern European ethnic identity). The only time Asians or indigenous communities like the Inuit are mentioned in the novel is with a sternly derogatory tone, and as a fringe element or prop supporting the larger discourse, that of select minorities in their struggle for livelihood and equality in America. This parallels a destructive and subtle tendency by Western cultures to build up a false representation of other cultures and let that representational model have the final say on the sentiments and judgments involved. They remain largely voiceless because they lack the translators or noble heroes that writers such as Doctorow have graciously provided for Eastern European and African Americans. America has consistently continued in this voiceless discourse, described succinctly in a quote from Karl Marx's essay mentioning Asian culture: "They cannot represent themselves. They must be represented" (Said 1).

Did the five-generation family known as the Grayson’s chronicled in detail by Claudio Saunt in his non-fiction book, Black, White, and Indian: Race and the Unmaking of an American deny their common origins to conform to “America’s racial hierarchy?” Furthermore, use “America’s racial hierarchy as a survival strategy?” I do not agree with Saunt’s argument whole-heartedly. They feel the need to embody and assimilate to whiteness because the white race has a voice and is seen, rather than silenced and unseen, in society. They are privileged with the freedom of not having to cope with the notion of being marked, silent, and unseen in society. Internal conflict caused by culture is a concept that Edward Hall explores in his book “Beyond Culture”. In this examination of intercultural interactions, Hall argues that people are born into the cultural prison of one’s primary culture. He then goes on to claim that from people can only be free of this prison and experiencing being lost in another (Hall). For Coates, this cultural prison is the permeating fear resulting from the blackness of his body. His internal conflict is therefore created when seeing the world of white, suburban culture. Because this world of pot-roasts and ice cream Sundays seems impossibly distant from the world of fear for his black body, Coates comes to feel the contrast of cultures. He tells his son, “I knew my portion of the American galaxy, where bodies were enslaved by tenacious gravity, was black and that the other, liberated portion was not” (21). As a result of the shocking divide, Coates comprehends the burden of his race. Coates therefore feels “a cosmic injustice, a profound cruelty, which infused an biding, irrepressible desire to unshackle my body and achieve the velocity of escape (21). The quality of life between the culture belonging to Coates’s skin in contrast to the culture of suburban America creates for Coates a sense of otherness between himself and the rest of the world. Throughout their history in America, Asian immigrants have struggled in many different ways to encourage this country to accept and respect the diversity of its citizens. Through efforts in labor strikes and military aid such as that in World War II, the American society has gradually moved to accept racial minorities. Asian today have much more freedom than when they first began traveling across the Pacific. However, many still find that they are unjustly viewed by society and treated as “strangers from a different shore” (474).
In the first Chapter of the book ‘A Different Mirror’ by (Takaki, 1993) the author embarks on a descriptive narrative that tries to elaborate the concept of a multiracial America. The chapter begins with the author taking a taxi ride in which he is subjected to racial discrimination. The taxi driver questions the author’s origin owing to the fact that his English is perfect and eloquent. This incident prompts a discussion that transpires throughout the chapter as the author tries to explain to his audience that America is a multiracial country with different ethnic groups that moved from their homelands to settle in the United States. The chapter discusses the settlement of various racial groups such as; English immigrants, African Americans, Asian Americans, Chicanos and the Irish.
The authoritarian parenting style is the stricter style. Parents who use this method have strict limits set and show little or no love. The most common reason for parents using this method is that they don't want their children being failures. So, parents as such will shame and blames, punish, and tease their child. As sick as this sounds studies show parents using this method are usually successful. When a child is punished or blamed he or she is said to learn what not to do, feel guilty, and avoid from making such mistakes again. Punishments include spankings, timeouts, and taking something of value from the child. Parents who use this method demand respect, allow no questioning or arguing, and want full compliance. Utilitarianism is a difficult topic to fathom, for it requires a large amount of questions and self-evaluation. In order to understand utilitarianism, think of bad versus bad. A principle stating that when one is faced with two difficult decisions, which choice would be less harmful for all of those involved? John Stuart Mill and Bernard Williams describe utilitarianism as pain versus pleasure or the lesser of two evils approach, and how that approach ties into ones ultimate choice. Utilitarianism is not about the pursuit of happiness, rather, it is really about picking which evil is the best evil.
Darling and Steinberg (1993) have defined parenting styles as “a constellation of attitudes toward the child that are communicated to the child and that taken together, create an emotional climate in which the parent’s behaviors are expressed” (p. 488). In order to fully understand how these parenting practice influence behaviors and habits on academic performance or achievement you must understand the differences between the practices. In a more concise explanation, authoritarian practices are parents who are extremely strict, admire obedience, and discourage communication between the parent-child and express low levels of warmth. Authoritative practices are parents who have rules and boundaries, open communication between themselves and the child and have an equal balance of warmth for the child. Permissive practices are parents who are warm and loving, however have no rules and boundaries, in other words, these parent have no limits or expectations for their child. Authoritarian parenting style consists of strict rules. Rules are set in place with the expectation that children will follow them. If said rules are not followed, the child receives a punishment without an explanation. According to Baumrind, authoritarian parents “are obedience-and status-oriented, and expect their orders to be obeyed without explanation” (1991).
However, in this type of parenting style, authoritative parents are more responsive to their child, more willing to listen to questions and more forgiving rather than punishing when their child fail to meet expectations. These parents are more supportive, rather than punitive, also, they focus on making their child confident and socially responsible.(Baumrind, 1966). In authoritarian parenting style, children are expected to follow the strict rules and regulation established by the parents. The parents are too demanding and directive but not really responsive towards their children. They are also status-orientated and children are expected to obey their rules without any explanations (Baumrind, 1991). Then, there is the permissive parenting style in which the parents rarely discipline their child because they have low expectations of maturity and self-regulation. Permissive parent is more responsive, non-traditional and lenient towards their child. They are nurturing and very open with their child (Baumrind, 1991). Lastly, neglectful parenting style is those parents who have both low demandingness and responsiveness towards their children. These parents are generally detached from their child’s life and in some cases; they may even reject or neglect their child’s needs (Maccoby & Martin,
