I am applying for the Gilman Scholarship in order to participate in the Kennesaw State University ISEP program to Milan, Italy. Currently I am working on a Bachelors of Arts degree in International Affairs with a concentration in Economics, Business, and Policy. One of my goals is to become an ambassador as well as work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Italy. The ISEP Undergraduate Education program at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is my program of choice. Throughout my educational career I have developed a passion to help other countries in the development of programs that will not only enrich the local economy but to also make them a competitive force in the global market. It was through research that allowed me to figure …show more content…
Besides, being a historic city Milan is Italy's richest, most populated and most economically active region within the country. For this reason, I choose Milan because through my research I was able to recognize that throughout its 2,000-year history, this city has been the driving force for expanding social, economic, cultural and political events. In addition to my academic and cultural interest, I find the Italian culture captivating. I love so many things of Italian society, the art and architecture, tradition, linguistics, music, fashion, food, and multicultural people. Italians are known as people whom are driven with great passion, energy, calmness, optimism, and a celebration of their past and present. Italians live "la vita bella" (the beautiful life) which is an easy-going and positive outlook on how to go about daily life. Unlike, the American culture the beautiful life doesn't mean the luxurious life -- it means a relaxed, family-centric lifestyle. Such example, of living in a family-centric lifestyle is one of the many cultural and traditional aspects that I want to fully grasp and comprehend as an individual. As an International Affairs major it is absolutely pertinent that my educational understanding is composed of various cultural and academic experiences that will mold me to be …show more content…
Even though I receive financial aid there has been college expenses that have not been covered by financial aid. Yes, I am aware that my life is not a phenomenal and that most students find themselves in the same predicament. But, I cannot speak for others. In fact, the only true that I can tell is my own. My challenges, frustrations, victories and failures have all led me to this place of growth. Prior, to applying for this study abroad program I had previously applied to another study abroad program but due to the lack of finances, class requirements, and personal problems I was not able to attend the program. Considering the challenges I’ve had to encounter, I got back on track in my academics and decided not to allow the lack of funds to stop me in continuing my pursuit to my goals. Receiving the Gilman scholarship would a stepping-stone to make it possible for me to pay for the program cost. My trip would be a real example of the endless opportunities education can give
IMSA’s opportunities are one of the main reasons I am applying. As I want to pursue a career in the medical field, especially in sports medicine. I believe that IMSA’s opportunities will help me achieve these goals of mine through the community and the overall culture at IMSA, and I believe I can contribute to IMSA’s environment by involving myself in the extensive extracurricular activities IMSA has.
In my junior year of high school, I joined the leadership program called ASB, also known as associated student body. I had the honor and role of being the school’s unofficial videographer to promote events with videos and short films posted on our social media sites because of my passion for video editing and artistic abilities. I also became responsible as being chairman for one of our committees to organize special recognition events for our senior athletes. ASB made my work stressful and challenging, but it was a good way to connect with others.
Unfortunately, my family and I fall into an area of the middle class that prohibits us from receiving need-based aid. Although I have graciously been awarded the Elizabeth Ann Seton Scholarship, without some additional form of aid, a Seton Hill education may be prohibitively expensive. My fourth year’s tuition alone would cost $37,520 with my current scholarship, and I would still have to pay for living expenses. Once my undergraduate and fifth years’ expenses are included, I will be over $150,000 in debt when I graduate. As a student who has worked exceedingly hard in the classroom and as a leader for four years, this amount of financial burden feels like a punishment. If I do not receive the Seton Scholar Award, I am not confident that I can attend Seton Hill and make the impacts I have described in this
Life in Italy is much different than life in the United States. Italians live at a much slower pace, than American’s and they have a desire to enjoy life instead of rushing through it as many American lifestyles exhibit (Zimmermann, K. (2015). The extended family is very important in Italy, whereas in the United States, the focus tends to be on the nuclear family, which includes mom, dad, and children (Zimmermann, 2015). The differences in Italian culture and American culture are vast and varied, but with a few comparable components to demonstrate similarities.
Over the past ten years, I have had the opportunity to travel extensively around the United States and Canada with my family so traveling abroad to Italy seemed like a natural adventure. I anticipated that my journey to Italy to be very similar to my previous experiences, with the addition of seeing some of the most beautiful landmarks and paintings in the world. When I arrived, I discovered an entirely different culture and attitude towards Americans. Conversation was difficult and I felt out-of-place. Italians were able to tell me apart even before I said a word. Anti-American graffiti were written on the stone walls of Rome which made me feel very unwelcomed.
Last but not least, the Italian-American’s contributed greatly to America’s past and left quite an imprint on our ‘melting pot’ culture. The Italian-Americans came to America following a dream; whether it be temporarily ‘escaping’ South Italy or a lifelong aspirations toward music. There perseverance and bravery left an impact stronger than words can express which assisted our future successes. Slowly yet steadily, Italians rose up the social ladder, opening up like a blossoming flower to their fellow Americans. Establishing their roots, then blossoming into a beautiful flower, revealing all beyond everyone’s expectations. Today, Italians have surpassed all the other ethnic groups in average job income and job prestigious, a true example of hard work paying off. As for, “Chi la dura la vince,”-He who perseveres wins at last...
I have thus far endured through having a severe eye condition, not being able to have the kind of financial support I need from my family and being limited from getting a support from the US government because I am not a citizen or legal resident. But, I have also made both social contributions and academical achievements that have brought purpose to the cause of the hardships in my life. And after being though it all and coming out with a more precise strive for a better future, I face, yet again another hindrance to my plan to study Biochemistry and influence as many lives as I can in a positive way. And, since I need a support in order to reach my goal, that is why I need the Esperanza Scholarship.

According to statistics, youth whose parents have not attended a post secondary are 19.8% less likely to attend university than those whose parents have. They also show a 12.8% gap between youth whose parents are in the bottom third of income distribution as opposed to those with higher incomes. On top of this, there's a 14.6% difference between youth from rural areas compared to population centres and a 7.5% gap between youth with one parent and youth with two. And yet, against all odds, I am writing to you today in the hopes of funding my education. I exhibit a majority of the characteristics you are looking for, such as leadership, financial need, a solid career plan and 2 and a half years of work experience. These are just some of the qualities that qualify me for the Harrison McCain scholarship.
My decision to become a doctor did not come in a moment of blinding revelation, but as
Therefore, Antonio sets the rest of the mood of the novel by changing the focus from just immigration to internally as well (North versus South). He uses something empowering to the Roman people against them, comparable to racism. He enforces the point that even fellow Italians possess distaste between each other and compartmentalize misconstrued labels on them. This novel presents different viewpoints of life in Italy and how each one has reasoning’s for the ideas of other people with none, except for Amedeo, ready to conform together and help each other. The novel’s purpose is to allow for new Cornell students to see culture from different points of view and to understand
Since the beginning of my academic endeavors, I have long cherished a dream to be a member of the social science research community, which gives our society progressive insights into human ecology. I began my undergraduate studies at Ramapo College of New Jersey with a passion for ecological justice and with the intention of majoring in environmental studies. Ramapo College’s progressive liberal arts foundation provided me with ample room to explore the multifarious array of social science courses. As I took more social science courses, however, my understanding of human social groups underwent a metamorphosis. As a result, I decided to pursue a degree in Social Science, with minors in the two fields I felt most passionately interested in, Women’s Studies and African American Studies.
Right next to food, family is the most important thing in Italian culture. My mother was born and raised in Naples, Italy and lived with her mother and three siblings after her father passed away when she was only six years old. My mother and my grandmother had a very close bond, the same bond my mother and I share now. My grandmother was a very hands on type of mom my mother tells me. Like most mothers, her children were her pride and joy. My mother’s most vivid memories of her childhood involve my grandmother teaching her how to make tiramisu and lasagna. Practices my mother has now passed onto me. Aside from the cooking lessons, my mother also taught me what it means to be a women. Being independent, never giving up, and working for what
Almost every inhabitant of the Colombian Amazon has an interesting story to tell about their home, which is one of the most amazing places in the world. The Amazon provides survival experiences, exotic food, extreme recreation, and a unique livelihood to all those who have lived there. However, the character and future of many have also been shaped by a context of poverty, harsh violence, restricted opportunities, geographical disparities and gender inequity. Their best memories are overshadowed by the consequences of many social, political and economic conflicts such as the coca cultivation, the armed conflict, the failure of social claims, the ineffective measures adopted by the Government, and recently, the collapse of financial pyramids.
There are many reasons why I would like to visit Italy. First of all, I am really interested in Italy’s ancient history and architectural heritage. Rome, the capital city of Italy is one of the most significant cities in history ruled by the famous Roman kings such as Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Vespasian and many more. I have heard and learnt the history of the Roman Empire since I was young and it made me want to visit Italy. I have also watched many Roman historic movies and it motivated my desire to visit the...
