The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the IOM joined together created to improve Future of nursing.
There are numerous report recommendations of Future of nursing by IOM. According to recommendation 4 nurses with degree increase 80% by 2020. Author fits in the number 4 recommendation. BSN program takes nurses more in-depth in their training which allows nurses to have a broader understanding in the field, and ultimately in what would be the desired patient outcome, safety. Doing BSN author improved her critical thinking and leadership roles and able to implement in her present work place. Recommendation 5 is Double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020. This will be challenging for the author to achieve it. She encourages her colleagues those who have the degree to go for masters and doctorial nursing. Author herself thinking of doing her masters in nursing after the BSN program. Eventually she wants to enroll in DNP program. Because author interested in direct patient care and if she chooses DNP program, she will be competent in teaching and clinical practice. Ever expanding clinical practice opportunities will enable nurse educators both to teach and to keep up-to-date of advances in nursing practice. Recommendation 6- lifelong learning for nurses is very essential in today’s health system. As the healthcare system incorporates with many complex patient’s nurses need to learn new changes and technology to improve better patient’s outcome. As she lives in Canada doing BSN helped her to get the nursing registration (Entry level). She was applying for the new job opportunities and she felt doing BSN helped her to find the job more easily. Increasing the level of education definitely promote her to improving developing her leadership, clinical skills and knowledge to enhance the patient care and safety. There are many studies (Aiken ) found in between certain years that the hospital that employed more BSN-prepared nurses experienced reduced mortality than hospitals that did not add more BSN-prepared nurses (RWJF, 2014). So the connection between nurse education and patient outcomes was so evident. So author think completing BSN is the great opportunity for her to find the job in hospitals. The IOM report had four key messages needed for advancing the future of nursing. “Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training; achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression; be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, …and; effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure” (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The report also included eight recommendations needed to facilitate the necessary changes to in the nursing profession so meet to demands of the healthcare reform.
The national shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) has helped generate formidable interest in the nursing profession among people entering the workforce and those pursuing a career change. According to a report issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service in 2002, the national population is continuing to grow and age and medical services continue to advance, so the need for nurses will continue to increase. They report from 2000 to 2020 the predicted shortage of nurses is expected to grow to 29 percent, compared to a 6 percent shortage in 2000. With the projected supply, demand, and shortage of registered nurses and nursing salaries ever-increasing, the nursing profession can offer countless opportunities. But first one must determine which educational path to pursue, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in nursing (ADN). Most will initially be educated at the associate degree level, even though the American Organization of Nursing Executives (AONE) has recommended a baccalaureate level as a minimal for entry-level nurses. With the expanding number of RN to BSN programs available there is always the option to further one’s education at a later date. The benefits for acquiring a BSN over an ADN include a better knowledge for evidence-based practice, an increased advantage for promotion, and the necessary gateway for higher education.

I am delighted in my career as a professional nurse and seeking the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) gives me the opportunity to expand my knowledge base in order to practice at a higher level, and obtain the terminal degree in my profession. My goal is to become an adult nurse practitioner, with primary focus to improve the practice of nursing. The Doctor of Nursing Practice will equip me with knowledge and skills needed to understand and appreciate research and facilitate the process of putting evidence into practice, with the overall goal of achieving improve patient safety, satisfaction and outcomes. The Doctor of Nursing Practice will enable me to assume more leadership role, in practice and in research. I should be able to participate in research and formulate nursing models guided by evidence based practice models of care. Having practiced as a professional nurse for five years, obtaining the Doctor of Nursing Practice gives me the opportunity to foster my professional growth and development.

Nursing, as a crucial part of the health care system, keeps evolving while dealing with an increasingly complex clinical situation that involves quality of patient care. Therefore, to successfully handle these scenarios, nursing needs to become more advanced, clinically and academically. A DNP degree is needed in this situation because according to Dunbar- Jacob, Navito & Khalil (2013), a DNP degree is considered to have more impact on nursing than a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree due to the advanced clinical education a DNP provides (p. 425). Hence, the DNP degree has an enormous impact in nursing practice especially in terms of improving clinical care, promoting leadership roles, and improving educational status.
This paper focuses on providing a summary of the efforts of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine research which influenced the IOM report, “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” The importance of the IOM “Future of Nursing” report related to the nursing practice, nursing education and nursing workforce development will be stated. The role of state-based action coalitions and how they advance goals of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action will be described. A summary on will be provided of two (2) initiatives that are spearheaded by Florida state’s Action Coalition with an explanation of ways in which the initiatives advance the nursing profession. Existing barriers to advancement currently in Florida and ways in which nursing advocates may overcome these barriers will be discussed.

This was no easy task as nurses work in such diverse settings such as outpatient areas, acute care settings, the community, and long term settings to name a few. Couple this with the fact that nurses have a variety of educational avenues such as the associates, diploma, or bachelor’s degree open to them to achieve the status of registered nurse (Institute of Medicine, 2010). All of this considered, the committee did design four key messages regarding the future of nursing as key in the transformation of health care as evidenced in their "Future of Nursing" report.
