The informal expectations between classmates, clients and society will give assurance that practicing an activity will help me progress towards professionalism. As a student in a doctor of physical therapist degree the formal and informal aspect of professionalism will allow me to maintain the highest standards of excellence when practicing medicine. Being able to maintain a high level of professionalism as a student will specify the importance in a patient’s interest, and quick responsive to health needs. The Guide outlines behaviors accepted for physical therapists critical in all settings of practice. These “core values” outlined include: “accountability, altruism, compassion/caring, excellence, professional duty, and social responsibility”. 3 In order to follow the core values of professionalism, physical therapists and physical therapy students must take responsibility for their actions in both clinical and classroom settings. A professional must be knowledgeable in their profession, committed to improvement of one’s knowledge and skills, service oriented, covenantal relationships to patients/patrons, creative, innovative, ethical, accountable and a leader. These competencies are essential for a professional to perform and excel in their profession.
In a highly respected profession such as nursing, professionalism is an important element to staying employed and setting one’s self apart from the rest of the applicants when competing for a potential job. By definition professionalism are the qualities and traits that describe a professional. While knowledge is crucial in any profession, according to an article published by the University of Kansas (2012), “all medical professionals must strive to retain those humanistic qualities integrity, respect, and compassion that constitute the essence of professionalism.” Whether you work in a hospital or administration these three qualities encompass the core of nursing and exemplify what it means to be a professional.
From interviews to the end of my education in a Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program, professors will notice and watch our professionalism develop throughout. In the context of being a student in this program, professionalism entails the attributes employers look for in new hires and who patients seek to find the best care. Although there are many characteristics that highlight professionalism, I will focus on the qualities I embody, how they apply in a Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program, and how my experiences in a Physical Therapy clinic have shaped my perspective of professionalism.
Professionalism is defined as the accrued knowledge and behavior possessed by individuals in order to obtain successful goals and attributes for their organization, facility or work environment (McDonagh, 2008). Being professional while at work let others know that you are reliable, respectful, and competent at what you do. Professionalism in a medical office is very important, it means putting patient needs as top priority. Professionalism in a medical office is taking responsibility of your patients, committing to patient confidentiality, and having patient-centered care for the patients.
Physical Therapy is not for just anyone. It takes a certain personality and demeanor in order to be a successful Physical Therapist. One word that can encompass the personality and demeanor of a Physical Therapist is professionalism. I already knew the basis of what professionalism was, but in this class, it went details, examples, and scenarios, instead of just the broad description. Before this class, I knew that professionalism was providing children the best quality education, and to continue learning. An education is a foundation for many people lives. Having an education will develop social interactions, help students become more creative, it aids us to contribute to the economy and prepare us for of career. A physical therapist must be able to handle the school work that is given to them. When applying to a DPT program your minimum prerequisite GPA must be 3.0, which I exceed. You must also take the GRE and have at least average score of one-hundred fifty. This will also look very good when applying to a DPT program. Then you must have observation hours. Some school may accept fifty hours, and other may take one-hundred and more. So far I have been able to complete over sixty hours of observation. I have been able to Prepare the treatment room for patient by following prescribed procedures and protocols. I also help treat patients by applying heat packs, assisting patients into a whirlpool, monitoring their motion, measuring mobility, performing prescribed exercises and strengthening techniques as an example. All of these assets I learned from my observation gives me an advantage on to become a successful physical therapist. In addition, to become a successful physical therapist you must have the proper resume as well. In every career, you have to provide your profession with a resume which must contain every feature about yourself to show why your a better fit than the rest. Your resume
As the field continues to progress students must have the keenness and the drive to keep going. Obtaining a doctorate in physical therapy will not be easy. Focusing all three years is mandatory to be able to learn all of the information that is taught. Having these attributes explained are crucial for physical therapist. One must be able to show kindness and have effective communication with patients. My personal experiences in the field of physical therapy have allowed me to better myself in many areas to encompass the skills needed to become a physical therapist.
