Dreams are the hopes and aspirations for your life. As I matriculate through high school, I reflect on the goals and dreams I have established for my life. Academically, I have always been a focused student, but I was not completely clear on my career goals. Initially at age ten, I wanted to pursue teaching because I really enjoyed working with younger children. During that time, I would go to my godmother’s in-home daycare and I would read and play academic games with the preschool aged children. They were so intriguing to talk to and to see life through their little eyes was so amazing, such as the way they adapt to life as they grow up. Just before my ninth grade year, I saw a commercial about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The commercial featured a family who had a premature baby with cancer. The commercial ignited so much compassion and emotion within me; in that moment I had an epiphany about my career purpose; to become a doctor who administers medical care for babies and children. I thoroughly researched professions working with babies, children, and cancer. From there, I determined that I wanted to pursue a career as either a neonatologist or a pediatric oncologist. I then went on to research everything related to these two fields of medicine. I learned everything from each profession’s top medical schools and the educational requirements; to the years of training in the field of study, to the certification required. I will then intend to either attend The University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to become a neonatologist or Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, California to become at pediatric oncologist. I have picked these various schools due to my research and experience. The Atlanta University Center has been a part of my life since the age of two. My mother graduated from Morris Brown College and my father graduated from Morehouse College. Additionally, my mother works at Morehouse College in the Psychology Department. So as you can see me wanting to attend Spelman College has been destined from the start. When I finally discovered I wanted to pursue a career in medicine; I searched the top schools for my specific interest in medicine to achieve success in that particular field. Upon searching I found The University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and Stanford University School of Medicine. These two schools are not only top ranked, but when looking further into the two universities’ criteria I found that they fit all the needs and wants I was looking for out of a graduate program.
