For my solo performance, I sang a piece named ‘I remember’ in the Musical Theatre genre. My piece was written by composer and lyricist, Stephen Sondheim who wrote both the musical score and the lyrics of the song. This song was written, along with several others, for the show ‘Evening Primrose’, a musical based on a short story, written by John Collier, which was published in the 1951 collection ‘Fancies and Goodnights’. It tells the story of a poet, Charles Snell, who takes refuge from the world by hiding out in a department store after closing. Once there, he meets a community of night people who live in the store and falls in love with a beautiful young girl named Ella. In this particular song, character Ella Harkins – originally played by Charmain Carr – reminisces about the outside world and all the memories she has from when she was younger and out in the open. It was written specifically for the television anthology series ABC Stage 67 and first aired in the US on November 16th 1966. It was later adapted into a stage show. I chose this song as it was requested by my …show more content…
I felt that this particular song was suited to me as my favorite style of music is musical theatre and it had quite a moderate range which was well tailored to my vocal range. It also had an emotive story line which I could use to show feeling and emotion in my voice: telling a story with every lyric sung. I also found it quite an interesting song to sing as there were lots of areas in which you could change the dynamics and, therefore, the delivery of the song. I kept most of the song quite quiet but increased the volume in certain areas using crescendos. I chose to do this as it intensified the tranquil, yet sad mood of the song and gave meaning to the lyrics of
The deaths per year done by guns, 80% of them are gang related. If I Grow Up, written by Todd Strasser shows the life of a male kid growing up in the projects in Chicago. DeShawn wanted didn’t want to join the gang and stay in school. But his family didn’t have money or food. His friend that was in the gang had a bunch of money. So DeShawn joined the gang because in school they didn’t teach them much, and the money that his family got was a lot more of it when he got in the gang. I think that DeShawn had a choice not to join the gang because he could get a job, could have gotten a better education, and other people have gotten out of the projects.

The story I chose for this analysis is “Why, you reckon?” by Langston Hughes. IN this analysis I will be focusing on how the great depression in Harlem had effect on the story, how racism played a part, and how or if the characters were justifyied in their actions. During this time period the intense racial divide combined with the economic harships that plagued the U.S. during the 1923’s makes for an interesting story that makes you think if the charaters were really justified.
Language and power have a strong relationship, when one is speaking one is introducing two things at once. Language and power hold on to each other like a priest and his God. They take each other in, sometimes helping others understand it. In “Aria” by Richard Rodriguez and in “And Then I Went to School” by Joe Suina describes how language and power can create and destroy your past and present.
A couple of other songs they played were “Bothered,” “Cruel and Pretty” and “Changes Come.” If you had never heard the band before tonight, this is where you would probably think all the songs sounded very similar. Slow, piano and sad. The variety lies in the songwriting, if you start paying attention to the lyrics now, you’d have a different opinion. I almost think what they say is so poignant sometimes it should be in a book or poem by itself. But on the other hand, if you took away the way Barquist sings it, or the accompanying instrumentation, I doubt you would get the same idea. They can even make an acoustic guitar sound like it’s in pain and crying.
Domestic violence, the connotation of the two words immediately invokes images in everyone's mind. Two songs will be discussed in this paper, these songs relate directly to the issue. The first song is “A Child Called ‘it’” by Buckcherry, released in 2008 on the Black Butterfly album. The second song is “Im ok” by Christina Aguilera, released in 2002 on the Stripped album. Buckcherry’s song, is based on a true story of a child that was abused by his mother. Similarly, Christina Aguilera’s song talks about her women who is being abused, you can tell this from the beginning of the song when she sings, “my father's fist would put her in her place.” Both of these songs directly talk about domestic violence and
We began learning a piece in class called " In Remembrance," an anonymous requiem with music by Eleanor Daley. "In Remembrance" felt different to sing than our usual pieces. The harmonies were beautiful, and with the mixture of the lyrics, I found myself getting chills while I sang it. Still I shook it off: it never left class with me.
This song made me think about how some performers of the day must have feared the changes coming forth. Instead of performing in the new "abandoned studio" with a few musicians and technicians, performers would be thrust upon huge sound stages with dancers, directors, lighting, and cameras. They would have to find their niche in this new media. Performers would have to be able to act as well as sing. They would need make-up, stylists, and publicists to help them achieve the transition.
The Criminal Justice System is made up of several different process law enforcement, judiciary, and corrections this system is where the accused individual are tried and punished for the crime they are charged with. The depiction of criminal justice system in throughout each process (police, courts, and correctional) has become ubiquitous on television today. Shows that give a visual of the arresting and investigation process (law enforcement) are the televisions shows “Cops” and “The First 48 Hours”. The show “Cops” is a television series that follows police officers, constables and sheriff deputies around during their patrol and other policing activity (Cops, n.d). Showing the officer enforcing the laws of the land, apprehend offenders, reducing and prevent crimes, maintain public order, provide emergency and related community services and more” (Schmalleger F., 2014). The “Cops” show conveys the initial stage of the law enforcement. The images or positive (in my opinion) when it comes to showing the actual community services the law enforcers provide. This allow police to become more integrated in to the communities. Reducing the amount of fear toward the particular criminal justice profession. It has change the outlook on policing in the communities and enhances the level of trust from the communities for law enforcement. This allows for a sufficient reduction and prevent crimes when law enforcement and the people of the community come together. “The First 48 Hour” is a show that shows the criminal justice process from the crime, arrest, to the investigation stages in the criminal justice process. This show follows detectives around from the state of their investigation (right after a crime occurs...
Do schools and colleges help students to develop fully their intellectual abilities? In the book They say I say, Gerald Graff, a professor who is one the coauthors of this book stated the importance of putting street smarts into academic work. He assumed that schools and colleges must take chances to exploit students’ hidden intellectual abilities. Through his own adolescent experiences, on intellectual vision, he believed that getting street smarts into academic education would bring better results in the real intellectual world. Moreover, having new experiences on nonacademic subjects helps students get more attentions and decrease tediousness.
“Somewhere In My Memory,” written by John Williams with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, is a well known piece of music that represents the joy of Christmas time. This piece was created specifically for the Christmas movie Home Alone, and was written at a culminating point in Williams’ career. Alone has scored more than 100 films and been nominated for 49 academy awards. As a reflection of Williams’ work, “Somewhere In My Memory” has the characteristics of a soaring song that features recurring melodies and musical motives. The intricate piano accompaniment reflects his early piano experience as a child and how he has developed since. This song is one of 19 composed by Williams on an album for Home Alone. Obviously a success, “Somewhere In My Memory”
Throughout the song the tone changes from a disappointed and unsatisfied feeling until it progresses into a hopeful and maturing tone. This transformation of tone follows the story almost perfectly and allows the reader to feel a connection to the transformation of the protagonist. This transformation from “expecting the world” (line 1) to realising that some things must happen for others to come into motion “the sun must set to rise” (line 24) is especially impactful and emotional when paired with the lines “ This could be para-para-paradise, para-para-paradise” that are repeated to show her newly established happiness and maturity. Ultimately, this progression from disappointed
She’s showing a lot of Expressed Emotions she spills all her emotions out in this song, the way she talks in the song is like she’s very angry. Overall the song does boost my ego a little bit every time I sing it aloud. In the “Others” category I’ve listened to the song called “How To Save A Life” by The Fray, my emotions of this song are melancholy, because it talks about how the singer couldn’t save his friend, and wants us to go and help somebody out there that is suffering. My emotion for this song was sad and it was my body’s initial response towards it by just reading the title and listening to
This song is an excellent example of the empowerment women and men may need occasionally. When someone is faced with a painful situation, people basically show two kinds of reaction: giving up or struggling. Those who decide to give up will usually keep complaining and blaming others for the situation they face. In contrast, those who decide to struggle, even though initially show almost the same reactions as the first group of people, they will finally choose to look at the good side of the situation they face. The process of being down, looking for the positives, and avoiding negative thoughts or feelings may be difficult but could ultimately result in the greatest gift of all, happiness.
