Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Although I reflect on my time in tennis with a great sense of pride, I cannot help but think about a number of choices I made with a lack of knowledge. I spent copious amounts of time choosing my equipment and the tournaments I was going to play, but one consideration I feel was often overlooked was my choice of coach. As stupid as it now sounds, I was under the impression that all coaches could develop my game, independent of who they were, and it was not until I began working with an Argentine named Martin Cejas that I realised how important the coach/player relationship is in development. We gelled almost instantly; he understood me and I understood him, and this close-knit relationship of complete trust and …show more content…
While Edberg, known for his wonderful attacking repertoire, brought Federer two feet closer to the baseline and encouraged him to take risks to finish points early, he was also taken on board for his great experience and knowledge of the game. Any technical or tactical progressions in the Djokovic game are worked on with long-term coach, Marian Vajda; Boris Becker, known for his ability to win ‘big matches’ was hired to share his experience and knowledge at a time when the Serb had lost five of his last six Grand Slam finals. ‘Where he helps me the most is from a mental point of view,’ said Djokovic. Following his 2014 victory at the All England Club, Djokovic praised Becker’s influence in giving him the mental strength to get across the line: ‘There were a few things that were important but most of all it was the mental toughness and the self-belief. He believes in my game.’
According to Galo Blanco (Coach of Milos Raonic, Jurgen Meltzer, Marcel Granollers and Filip Peliwo), the role of a coach in the higher echelons of the game is to ensure that the player has every aspect of performance to allow them to to succeed on the court. As Blanco points out, the technical development of competitive level players is normally completed

This is the only way to develop a relationship of trust and confidence, and this is the only way for the coach to learn what exactly he needs to do outside of the technical and tactical work for that player to maximise performance. The top coaches will work hard to develop this relationship with their players and players should be wary of committing to any tennis training programme where they either do not have a healthy, open relationship with the coaching team or where the coaches are not committed enough to put in time off the court to gain an understanding of who the players really
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
The two coaches Arthur had as a child through his adulthood had a snowball effect on Arthur Ashe’s skill and game. Ashe received the best
As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. A quality coach can build a player up while a bad coach can tear them down. My goal as a coach was to always leave the player striving to be the best they could be. A good coach
He is infamously known for his horrible temper and the harsh manner in which he dealt with the members of his team. While he was often seen as displaying lack of control and discipline when dealing with his players, he still is regarded as having a very successful career (Freidman, 2013). For many years the winning averages were used to dictate the achievements on how the two interacted. It was believed that if a team has more wins than losses, that the coach and athlete combination was superb. The win – loss record has been established as a longstanding instrument measuring the success of athletic players and coaches.
Coaches should have an arrangement of fundamental abilities that they depend on to produce a positive outcome. Definition of a coach from the American Heritage Dictionary, Third Edition (page 167) One who trains or directs an individual or team, to train or instruct teach a team. The goal behind coaching is to exhibit the ability to get the most out of everyone on the team. It should be a goal to bring out the greatest potential from every team member. It’s insane how many players do not even know their true potential. Successful coaches assess these individuals and the team to advance them to the next level of sports. "The Little Book of Coaching, Motivating People to be Winners" by Ken Blanchard and Don Shula (2001) gives a great acronym of the word C-O-A-C-H. The acronym breaks down as follows: Conviction Driven: never compromise your beliefs-Overlearning: practice until it is perfect-Audible-Ready: know when to change-Consistency: respond predictably to performance-Honesty-Based: walk your talk. This acronym should remind you of your job as a coach. A good coach
There is no better place to learn the value of hard work and dedication than in a sport. Coaches have the ability to instill values into their players and shape their character. They are great mentors who offer valid advice and only want to see their athlete succeed. In an article titled “Coach, What is Your Impact?” it says that when players have a coach that is concerned not only with their athletic performance but also their genuine well b...
Coaching tennis has been a very valuable experience for me. As my first job it has taught me several valuable skills including the certification process, organization, learning styles and responsibility. I am positive that I will use all of these skills in my future and am confident in my abilities for each.
 "Correct technique, but you didn’t squeeze the grip again. The raquet shouldn’t wobble as you hit it." Dennis recognises the problem, explains it and then evaluates it for the player, making it clear what they did wrong and how they can improve it.
A big question in today’s society is “Will a coaching philosophy improve performance or provoke a lifelong commitment to sport, or develop character, etc.?” I believe that all can be affected by a coach’s philosophy and the way that coach does things. The reason I say that is because there are so many different coaches out in the world that make the game easier, but also crappy for players.
An effective coach is someone who provides encouragement to and learning opportunities to his or her athletes. There are several areas in which coaches show great role model strength. Such as, sportsmanship, coaches always needs to be in control and conduct themselves with class and dignity. They teach the essentials of being a good sport, that way they don’t get any technicals. Next, appearance, coaches should always be dressed at their best at a game showing their players how much appearance matters at a game.
Coaching is a very complex and demanding profession. It requires many technical and personal skills (Chamber, D., 1997). All coaches have their own style of teaching. There is no right or wrong method of coaching. Nevertheless, the coach’s philosophy determines his or her coaching aims and objectives, while having a huge influence on the athletes and it’s surrounding environment.
Some people may think that tennis is just a blow off sport, that it doesn’t take any talent, and anyone can do it. I started playing tennis about 4 years ago and I remember how hard it was to learn. One of my best friends and I started playing together and his dad had taught him how to play, when he first started teaching me I got really frustrated because I would keep hitting the ball out and I found out that playing and coaching tennis was much harder than it seemed.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How does a coach become successful? I aim to answer all of these questions and more in my paper.
A sport coaching is an important way of developing the career of athletes. It involves a manager or a coach helping sportspeople to utilize their abilities and advance in their sports careers. Coaches usually watch his/her performer in a match, identify areas that need improvement in the performer’s sporting, and develop plans for training sessions that will be used to correct the problems identified. The coach usually applies some skills which are usually gained through formal education and training or through experience and observation (Knowles et al 2005). This includes the use of an appropriate coaching philosophy to learn the psychological aspects of sportspeople and set the stage for performance within a sports team. A coaching philosophy
The coach becomes a motivator and a facilitator of growth or athletic skills. This growth will ultimately lead to the attainment of individual and group goals. For the sports team, the coach will lead its members’ growth in developing training, providing encouragement, and monitoring their progress. The player will become more skillful in the game. More skillful players win. Sport coaches will assess their players’ overall strengths and weaknesses by placing the player in a position which accentuates their positive attributes, in an attempt to overcome any negative aspects.
