Michael Jackson. The Beatles. Whitney Houston. Celine Dion. What do all of these people have in common? They all wrote songs that inspire and motivate people. Songs can inflict emotions upon a person or make them perform certain actions; music is one of the most influential mediums that exists. Melodies can aid in recovery from injury. Love songs can make someone extremely joyful or deeply heartbroken. Songs about drugs and violence have the power to make someone think that those actions are what is “cool” and start doing them. Music can produce multiple responses, including physiological, emotional, and behavioral. First of all, music has the capability to cause physiological responses, or effects on the operation of one’s body. It has been proven that music has powerful therapeutic effects. According to Marshall Amores, in his article entitled "Music has Powerful Impacts, can De-Stress Students,” in the October 2014 edition of University Wire, “It has been clinically proven that music enables people to handle the stresses of their lives more efficiently.” For example, many people listen to music to ease the boredom of a tedious chore, such as cleaning the house or mowing the lawn. Also, children who are involved in music may have increased self-esteem, which is a very important factor in life. Aside from that, listening to music can better someone’s mood. If an individual is in deep sorrow, and they listen to a song that suits their mood, singing along can comfort them and help them feel better.
