Education, it's the only thing anyone can’t take away from anyone, once it has been achieved, it encourage people to study the past and present for the future. It comes from a type of writing or an actual teacher, teaching the students something new or encouraging them to be better or create higher goals than the students thought of themselves. Learning is away people educate themselves, by first getting inspired by someone else and then continuing the chain of inspiring more people to educate themselves about the world and its surroundings. The “learners” are the ones that will get the most benefit of the learning power because of it, they wouldn’t have trusted themselves to find out more about everything else in life, and getting out the …show more content…
social norms of what society tells them to how to live their life since it’s what their ancestors’ lifestyle is in their lifetime. Essays, educational videos, and tv shows illustrating how the “learners” having the learning power and because of it they became successful in life. Essays like I Just Wanna be Average by Mike Rose and Learning to read by Malcolm X prove that even though some people came from bad situations they use those bad situations to motivates themselves to better by changing their life because someone or something had impacted them to educate themselves which lead them to be successful.
In the essay I Just Wanna be Average, Mike Rose talks about how he didn’t really care about school until his later year of school when he was put in smart classes, but it was in Mr. McFarland’s English class that he started reading books after so many years and actually got good grades in his last year of high school. Mr. McFarland inspired Mr. Rose to be a lifelong learner which he actually shaped himself up and when it was time for college registrations he help him get into a good college which now Mr. Rose is using that knowledge to inspire other people and teach them what Mr. McFarland had thought him. X Educational videos such as TED Talks which has various inspirational presentations about technology, education and design presented by experts in those topics. In Angela Lee Duckworth’s TED Talk speech of Git, she stated that “Grit is having perseverance and long term goal”which in other words learners have the learning power because they have the drive and motivations to continue learning and educating themselves.
People have grits because they had something or someone inspires them truly which is the reason why the continue to work on or educate themselves. Angela quoted in her speech that“‘Dr. Dweck has shown that when kids read and learn about the brain and how it changes and grows, in response to challenge, they’re much more likely to persevere when they fail because they don’t believe that failure is a permanent condition" which can connect to Mr. Rose’s article because when Mr. Rose was put in Mr. McFarland’s class in his last year of high school which he got challenge by the subject which he actually tried hard and got good grades that year. People also who question everything like a child which is when you find out something new and you're not happy with what people gives you so you ended up researching about it and educating themselves. Scientists are also like this they spent on months even years on experimenting or doing research one particular topic and after testing the data the result is rejected and so they have to go back to square one even if they had
already spent working on this project for couple of years and just proving its a failed, but most of them especially when it was just its first trial they would not give up and continue on to fix the mistake but just going back to step 1 which is making hypothesis. Another Ted Talk presenter is Sugata Mitra‘s which in his Ted Talk video Kids Can Teach Themselves, he shared the story on how he got into the conclusions that “children will learn to do what they want to do” about how he went to New Delhi, India and brought couple of computers and put them in the wall that is seen by everyone and children there were amaze but when he ask questions about the word that says in the screen they didn't answer which to him was a downer and so he left. But little did Mr. Mitra know those children had been playing around with the computer he brought, learning how to use it and take advantage on what it can produce. After leaving for months Mr. Mitra went back to New Delhi, and he said that when he asked the question that he had asked months ago, no one answered but one and she answered him with elaboration and use science words, which ofcourse he didnt expected will be the result of it. These quotes and story reminds me of my senior quote which is by Jim Rohn, “If you really want to do something, you'll find a way. If you don't, you'll find an excuse.” because people today make those choices with their lives every single day, though most people would end up choosing what they are forced or what society tells them just because money is more important than anything in today’s society. This quote also connect to the previous quotes because learners who has grit which is the motivation to achieve what they really like or curious about on learning will achieve them compare to others. This passionity can also be seen in tv reality tv shows like Big Brother. TV shows like Pinoy Big Brother which is the filipino version of the American reality TV show Big Brother, but PBB is more educational and family friendly show which means it has morals that can be learn by everyone that is watching the show. Big Brother in PBB is the owner of the house and a voice of a man that no one had ever met even before the show started a decade ago. Every year/ season Big Brother would have houseguests (a.k.a the contestants) and for months they would stay at the house for a whole three to five months without any connections with the outside world, but on the same time almost every move they make it is seen by millions of viewers. While staying in the house, drama happen; fights with each other, family problems and basically life problems. Every time the houseguests (which is the learners) would need advise on solving their problems or Big Brother (the giver) see that his houseguests are making bad choices in his house, he will advise them all these lessons that they not only will use inside Big Brother’s house but also when they leave and face the real world, which viewers had seen all these years since those houseguests become celebrities and criticized by everyone but because of the advice they got from Big Brother they will now know how to deal with it and become successful in life. The houseguests entered the house with their own talents, college degrees and looks, but because of Big Brother, they will leave the house with life wisdom that they will always use in everyday life. Through weekly tasks in the show for the houseguests Big Brother taught them to have long goals and show them they can achieve it if they really want it by using the card of getting passionate/ motivated for a loved ones. PBB if compare with the other country’s Big Brother shows, their Big Brother would just let the houseguests make more complications and learn for their own since those dramas will just boost their tv ratings and give them more money. Though filipino viewers of PBB love watching the show because they not only can relate to the houseguests’ feelings or have the same past experience, the viewers also can lesson learned from the the mistake and also use those advice of Big Brother in their own daily life. Learning is not only learn inside the classroom such as reading about them in the articles or even watching youtube videos of Ted Talk that English classes require students, but also it can be learn outside even in tv shows demonstrates how learners learn from givers and use those knowledge to succeed in life. Learners will benefit more than the giver with the learning power by using those ideas they had learn to either elaborate more on their understanding of the world and use them to create more solution for the problem of the world; or they can become givers, which is pass on those knowlege/ wisdom to another learner who can use them in also doing good for themselves and others. Learning something new or expanding our knowledge is how we educate ourselves to be more active citizens of the world.
In this article Emily Hanford is taking information from Angela Duckworth’s findings on the research of ‘grit’. Hanford quotes Angela Duckworth definition of ‘grit’ as , “‘sticking with things over the very long term until you master them.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford also quotes Duckworth’s article to then explain that the, “‘ gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon; his or her advantage is stamina.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford is thus explaining that grit is like perseverance; that a person who works hard can achieve as much as a person who has intelligence. By explaining to students that achieving in school is not just intelligence but also grit as well, it can make students realize that if they persevere in their studies they can make achievements just as a person with more
The deaths per year done by guns, 80% of them are gang related. If I Grow Up, written by Todd Strasser shows the life of a male kid growing up in the projects in Chicago. DeShawn wanted didn’t want to join the gang and stay in school. But his family didn’t have money or food. His friend that was in the gang had a bunch of money. So DeShawn joined the gang because in school they didn’t teach them much, and the money that his family got was a lot more of it when he got in the gang. I think that DeShawn had a choice not to join the gang because he could get a job, could have gotten a better education, and other people have gotten out of the projects.
“We want to emphasize that the personal characteristics and skills of each individual are equally important”. (Page #221, para #3) Owen and Sawhill are inquiring that to be successful in any major requires dedication and personal motivation, which is another example of the authors bringing pathos into their argument. Owen and Sawhill state that “if they don’t just enroll but graduate, they can improve their lifetime prospects”. (page #220, para #1) Owens and Sawhill statement is taken as, applying with great intensions is not good enough to be successful in college. Owen and Sawhill are completely open about the fact that college isn’t for everyone and that’s perfectly acceptable. “It may be that for a student with poor grades who is on the fence about enrolling in a four-year program, the most bang-for-the-buck will come from vocationally-oriented associate’s degree or career-specific technical training”. (Page #222, para #1) this statement opens the argument to be about both, is college worth it financially, and also academically. Owens and Sawhill want their reader to understand that, being pushed to achieve something that you have no passion for attaining, only robs someone of their true
Mike Rose argues that society very often neglects and does not see the full value and potential of students in his essay. "The error went undetected, and I remained on the vocational track for two years. What a place."(Rose) He mentioned that he was seated in vocational school and put him in the bottom level classes by accident, but he did not argue with that and keep stay
I had read an essay called, “I Just Wanna Be Average” by Mike Rose. The essay was about Rose revisiting his high school experience. He explains his adventure through school reflecting on his education, learning environment, & behaviors of students/teachers. Also he talks about the motivation or lack thereof in him and his fellow peers reflecting on them just wanting to be average.
The story I chose for this analysis is “Why, you reckon?” by Langston Hughes. IN this analysis I will be focusing on how the great depression in Harlem had effect on the story, how racism played a part, and how or if the characters were justifyied in their actions. During this time period the intense racial divide combined with the economic harships that plagued the U.S. during the 1923’s makes for an interesting story that makes you think if the charaters were really justified.
Many great minds believe that education is a powerful tool. Investing in your education is the most valuable and most rewarding thing a person can do to secure their future. Influential people who have brought positive changes to the world have said: “The investment in knowledge pays the best interest”. (Franklin). “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. (Nelson Mandela). “A brighter future starts with an education”. (Montgomery).
In “I Just Wanna Be Average”, Mike Rose recounts his experiences in vocational program in high school, which known as bottom level. When he was a freshman, he accidently was placed in these classes but he decided to stay. Rose goes into details describing some of his teachers and classmates. Certain teachers he introduced were not enthusiastic about their jobs and they don’t believe their students can make good achievements, and sometime they even treat students violently, which also lead some students of the vocational program to slack off and not care about studying. Rose also focused on some of his classmates, who were seen as troublemakers. He found out that they actually were not always like fighting, being lazy and loafing, and they had some special skills showed their true personalities. There was one boy that very stuck out to Rose was Ken Harvey, who was asked by teacher to give an opinion of working hard to make achievements, stated that “ I just wanna be average” (Rose 335). I was pretty impressive about this quote because that I think being average might like some of students calm down and feel not so stressful to survive in educational system. Later in Rose’s life, he eventually moved out of vocational program and back to typical school system. At this time, his father passed away, which is not so relevant with the main plot. Later, Mr. MacFarland came into Rose’s life as his English teacher in senior year. Rose looked up Mr. MacFarland deeply because he sincerely cared of his students, told the importance of working hard to them and even encourage Rose to pursue further education in college. I can tell that Mr. MacFarland left positive impacts on Rose’s whole life, and helped him found his real potential.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, A well known author , wrote a quote stating " Unless you try to do something beyond what you have mastered , you will never grow ". This statement speaks true volume because you are not challenging yourself to improve the skill sets that you have and your are limiting yourself to what you can actually achieve. His quote should be used as an inspirational guideline to help encourage others to go beyond what they have already accomplished. Getting involved in certain activities or even trying something new can allow people to explore their potential in ways they would have never done prior. In order for someone to challenge themselves they should figure out new ways to improve their overall demeanor.
After reading the article, “The Myth of ‘I’m Bad at Math’” I began to think about my past learning experiences and realized that my opinions on this subject have changed drastically over the years. For the most part, I felt like this article made a lot of good points, especially considering my own experience with believing in incremental vs. fixed intelligence. Basically from the beginning of my schooling I was taught to think that some kids were just smarter than others, and that that couldn’t necessarily be changed. I think this had a lot to do with the fact that I was considered a “smart” kid: I caught onto most learning concepts easily, so people told me that I was “smarter” than other kids. If I had been a child who learned a different way, I think that I would have been taught to believe in the incremental model of intelligence very early on as to not discourage me from growing as a learner (which was exactly what teaching kids that
One last aspect of grit is the ability to overcome animosity. Failure is imminent, and in order to achieve success, one must get up, face their fears and keep moving forward. Most people will face at least one person that they would rather not deal with, but they have to anyway in order to keep their job or get through school. In his presentation “Failing Forward” which covered the topic of grit, Professor Eddinger painted a picture of overcoming animosity. Eddinger explained that a mother giraffe will repeatedly push her baby over in order to teach it to always get back up again and to let it know that it
Education has always been in existence in one form or another. As each child is born into this world regardless of who or where they are born, life lessons immediately begin. He/she will learn to crawl, walk, and talk by the example and encouragement of others. Although these lessons are basic in the beginning they evolve as the child grows. However, the core learning method of a child does not change. Learning from others, they will watch, listen, and then act for themselves. Thomas Jefferson believed that an education would lead men and women to the ability to be self-governed and become positive contributors to society (Mondale & Patton, 2001). Today, we can see how true this is by the examples of others. Those that are given the opportunity for education are more likely to find jobs and develop skills that not only improve a community, but influence the economic growth of their nation (Ravitch, Cortese, West, Carmichael, Andere, & Munson, 2009, p. 13). On the other hand, if an education is not provided to individuals, they can become a hindrance to that nation’s growth.
In the article “I Just Wanna Be Average” Mike Rose teaches us we go through various obstacles in life. OFten we need someone who sees our potential in order to succed as the person we’ve always wanted to become. For example, Rose’s Sophmore Biology teacher noticed his good grades on tests and decided to look into it. There he realized Rose was in the wrong program the whole time. “He checked the school records and discovered the error. He reccommened that I beigin Junior year in the college prep program.” (Rose 4) Another example would be during Senior year when Rose’s English teacher Mr. MacFarland worked hard at this job as it showed in the way he taught students inspiring them with intellegence. “He analyzed poems with us… making a potentially difficult book accessible with his own explinations.” (Rose 5)
what is Grit? Grit is firmness of character or having an indomitable spirit, in other words grit is believing in ourselves and having hunger to succeed. I believe grit is something real and truly makes a difference in anything you do. In the passage the “Significance of Grit” Angela Duckworth speaks about how some people have a trait that leads them to succeed over others and she calls it grit. Me being a student,I can totally see where she is coming from because you need to have an internal flame that roars inside of you to see what you are actually capable of. I had never really heard of the word grit in the academic world until taking this class, I thought grit and being smart where the same thing but that’s not the case.I believe everyone shares this trait but they show it in different tasks Many times I have been resilient and gritty in an academic environment without even knowing.
In a person’s life, they learn from everything around them, and take in everything that they see, and learn from all of it. Hopefully, they get a good result so that they may be able to make a difference in the world around them. I feel that I have to tools to make the changes that I want, and the knowledge to know how to make these changes. I look toward the future with a bright outlook, and know that to keep learning is the key to making my bright outlook the truth. For my future and the future of people younger and older than me, education will always be the key.
