Recommended: Effect of Rape
Melinda's struggle starts when she goes to a party ,and she is raped by a guy named Andy Evans. She later calls the police and since then she is known as a snitch and she suffers from shame and bullying. Also, everytime she sees Andy she either runs or hides in fear. For example when she encounters Andy in the bakery ,”Bunny Rabbit bolts, leaving fast tracks in the snow.” This only influences her to obtain more and more fear which she can't seem to face her problems or even warn her friends about him and his inappropriate and hurtful actions. A reason she can't stand up to him is because she suffers with her friendships causing her to be speechless and untrusted, for all her past friends left her and she is left alone and vulnerable. In addition, one of the actions she takes toward retrieving her voice is warning her friend about Andy and his desires. Melinda decides that she has to advise her friend after she sees Rachel kissing with Andy. she finally comes to the choice of writing her a note on a torn piece of paper while still hiding her identity, “I groan and rip out a piece of notebook paper. I write her a note, a left-handed note, so she won't know it's from me.” This is one of the first steps she takes toward regaining her voice. Also this helps explain to her friend indirectly why she called the cops …show more content…
Such as when she draws a half dead tree which represents her in the sense that she is barely surviving and feels dead. Another way her artworks depict her feelings is when she draws the tree that was struck by lightning which shows that she too has been hurt and she can't heal due to the fact that she can't let go of her past. Finally her final artwork is a full grown beautiful tree and she decides to even add birds which, to her represent hope and opportunity. This changes her for it helps her believe that she can still get over it and progress for the
...through and seen as a child, she really overcame the battles of the community as an artist gathering bits and pieces of memories from the trash just to make something out of it. But, to Saar it meant the world to her to have that doll that was repaired for her on Christmas. She really didn’t see it trash but as treasure in her eyes.
Her work resembles fossils and botanical illustration pages at the same time. Her simplicity and willingness to give back to her community is also an attribute I admire of her. Her work is important because of it has been used a medium to convey precious memories through the preservation of flowers. This artist inspires me because of her mastery of such a simple technique to create beautifully simplistic, yet intricately detailed works. This is an aesthetic I hope to achieve in my personal work because of my love of detail and organic shapes, such as flowers. It is amazing how she has achieved such wonderfully detailed and organic shapes using a medium that I never thought to be used in such an organic
They both know that their daughter will break if they were to split up. To keep in mind absolutely no one knows anything about Melinda's attack, and if her parents were to find out she knows that they would split. On the first day of high school Melinda finds herself alone, along with another new girl named Heather. Heather is a new student hoping to find a popular group of friends. Heather and Melinda set out to find a good group of friends, but finally settle on a group of preppy and rich kids named the Marthas. The girls are not wanted by the group, and now they have really have nowhere to go. They only have each other. Sadly in the beginning half of the book Heather realizes that Melinda is too depressed for her, and not good enough for her. Sadly Heather dumps Melinda leaving her by herself. Consequently Melinda starts to quit school. She goes to the mall multiple times and starts to not care, once she is caught she starts to self harm herself. Melinda becomes severely depressed as shown on page 81... ¨ I just want to sleep. The whole point of not talking about it, silencing the memory, is to make it go away. It won't. I'll need brain surgery to cut it out of my head. ¨ This shows how Melinda just wants to be left alone. Being raped was one of the biggest incidents that affected her mental life plus her social life. On page 61 the text says ¨ I get out of my bed and take down the mirror. I put
word “art” which may imply something about the materialistic world that she tries to be a part of. Interestingly, and perhaps most symbolic, is the fact that the lily is the “flower of death”, an outcome that her whirlwind, uptight, unrealistic life inevitably led her to.
...ors to describe her life and situation. This comes primarily from the fact that in her therapy sessions that is how she is taught to deal with everything. For example, one metaphor she talks about is “… she comes up with the idea of lighting candles to symbolize my past, present, and future…I’ve noticed my past melting… my present candle has stayed pretty much the same,” (D 266). She explains them as her past is become less controlling, her present is her and concrete ideas and her future is bright and untouched. These metaphors show how much she has grown and allow the things she is learning to have more meaning. All of these combine to make the piece very effective and insightful. They help to get her point across and call people to action to help against these crimes.
The plot of the book, Speak is that Melinda Sordino, a freshman at Merryweather High went to an end of the summer party with some of her friends. Things take a turn for the worst when a senior named Andy Evans sexually assaults her at the party without her friends knowing about it. Melinda is frightened, afraid, and does not know what to do so she calls 911 busting the party, and causing her friends and everyone at that school to hate her, even if they don’t know her.
Tragic events can leave scars but they should not be allowed to define how someone lives their life. After being assaulted, Melinda decides not to talk about it and bottles up her pain, hoping to forget it. “It is easier not to say, shut your trap, button your lip, can it” (Anderson 9). In this quote, Melinda is forthright about her belief in silence. This statement defines Melinda’s behavior for most of the novel. The quote shows that Melinda does have voice she just does not want to use it outside of her own head. While Melinda recognizes that her isolation is harmful, she takes steps to reconnect to others and get help. Speaking up can get you somewhere in life.”Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, or being hated, don’t give way to hating, and yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise” (Kipling lines 6-8). This quote means things will happen to you, people talk, and you are going to lose friends, however, you cannot let this affect you. For the theme of finding one’s voice, the texts might be showing how speaking up and pushing through the awful names people call you can help you be more confident and competent. Finally, characterization is another tool Anderson and Kipling use to develop the theme of finding one’s voice and identity.
In the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda, the main character, goes through a series of events that affect her in the long run and shape her identity. Melinda goes through an eventful evening at a party and keeps it to herself for a long period of time. This is just one of the things that affects her. Some other turning points in Melinda’s life is when she finally tells someone about what happened at that party, as well as losing her friend Heather. These are all things that
The composition of this painting forces the eye to the woman, and specifically to her face. Although the white wedding dress is large and takes up most of the woman’s figure, the white contrasts with her face and dark hair, forcing the viewer to look more closely into the woman’s face. She smokes a cigarette and rests her chin on her hands. She does not appear to be a very young woman and her eyes are cast down and seem sad. In general, her face appears to show a sense of disillusionment with life and specifically with her own life. Although this is apparently her wedding day, she does not seem to be happy.
...retation of the painting some aspects were surprising to how dark and heavy hearted she could speak, she took an interesting perspective. However in her interpretative poem she found a perspective of the painting that connected with her. As she used every stroke of darkness painted into the canvas an opportunity to have it symbolize this darkness and evil that resides in the world. It told her story and her experience of a starry night. Similarly Van Gogh had used every stroke of light painted into the canvas to be a symbol of beauty, and a symbol of his fascination of the night sky and its illuminating lights. He uses swift movements of his brush to depict a sky that seem to be able to sweep the mind away from the frustrations of this world in to the dreamy night light. A single painting worth a million words tells many stories through every perspective.
When first approaching this work, one feels immediately attracted to its sense of wonder and awe. The bright colors used in the sun draws a viewer in, but the astonishment, fascination, and emotion depicted in the expression on the young woman keeps them intrigued in the painting. It reaches out to those who have worked hard in their life and who look forward to a better future. Even a small event such as a song of a lark gives them hope that there will be a better tomorrow, a thought that can be seen though the countenance by this girl. Although just a collection of oils on a canvas, she is someone who reaches out to people and inspires them to appreciate the small things that, even if only for a short moment, can make the road ahead seem brighter.
Here-try a tree' (Anderson 146) what this symbolizes to me about Melinda is that she wants to talk but doesn't know how. She doesn't know how to speak because she doesn't know if anyone will trust her and if they would just ridicule her instead of believing her. Also Melinda doesn't know how to get her feelings out because before trying to draw a tree she was trying to carve a linoleum block but kept messing it up. I also think it symbolizes how Melinda is slowly learning how to talk or let her feelings out. I think this quote symbolizes this by having Melinda draw with another person instead of just being
Three years have passed and Violet has been with the gang ever since.Violet not only felt grateful, but appreciated for being with them. With the gang, she feels complete. She no longer feels like an outsider. She not only gained friends, but a family. Walking home to school, she sees Zayn approaching her. Ever since becoming a part of the gang, Violet and Zayn have become inseparable. Violet similes at him, he does so in return. “Hey, Deven told me that we are expected to sell some drugs after school”, he said. “Fine by me.” Violet replied. Violet knew that with joining the gang she would have to do some things that were illegal, but over the years she learned how to accomplish the orders without getting caught. After school, Zayn and Violet went to their hideout (an abandoned house) to collect the drugs. Once collected, they went straight to the neighborhood that always seems to want something from them. On the verge of giving some drugs to a crackhead, someone shouted, “Hey!”. Violet turns around to see two cops running towards them. Filling with panic, Violet turns to Zayn to see him reach for her arm and pulling her into a run. “Come back here!” yelled one of the
They would also make decorated altars in their homes to welcome the spirits before they leave. There is a strong connection with this painting and this holiday; people would flood the streets wearing bright colorful clothing with masks on their faces such as the little girl in the painting. Another symbol that is shown in the painting is the yellow flower the child is holding. This flower is most likely to be a tagete flower, which people place on their loved ones’ graves to mark the celebration. This painting is also a depiction of Kahlo’s feelings and the life she had to live, hence the paintings subtitle “She plays alone”. Frida Kahlo often felt alone, whether it have been physical or being alone in her mind with her thoughts. I get the impression that Kahlo did not have much of a childhood and that the young innocent girl of who she once was has died when the troubles of her life became too much to bare. The masks could also be represented as her demons that she had to face and hide behind all her life. The flower that she is holding could be seen has the only happiness or a sense of joy that she had while being in
Personification is shown multiple times throughout the story. Personification is used to illustrate the Rood’s story of how it transitioned to a careless tree to this international symbol. The Rood uses personification to make itself talk to the readers. The Rood says, “I was felled from the forest’s edge, ripped up from my roots.” It explains how God almighty
