In the biography ‘I am Malala’ by Malala Yousafzai, two important characters are Malala and her father. In this essay, I will describe what lessons Malala Yousafzai and her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, has taught the audience. I will also compare these two characters and see the similarities and differences that they may have.

The biography ‘I am Malala’ is about the life of 14 year old Pakistani Malala Yousafzai who was shot in the head by the Taliban for standing up for women's education.

In the biography, an important character is Malala Yousafzai. Malala is a young woman who stands up for what she believes in. She is not afraid to express her opinions on educational rights for girls. This is shown in the text when Malala says 'If I am speaking for my rights, for the rights of girls, I am not doing anything wrong. It’s my duty to do so.' This reiterates that education is a very important part of her life. She has a strong sense of belief that young girls should have an education so that they can stand up for themselves in the future. Ziauddin believes that we shouldn't let our weaknesses define us. When Ziauddin was younger, he had a stutter which made it hard for him to communicate with others. At age 13, he entered a public speaking contest in which he had won first place. He continued to enter speech contests and won most of them. In the text, Malala says 'My father had turned his weakness into strength.' Ziauddin was able to overcome his stuttering problems and showed us that our weaknesses won't always be a weakness and if we work hard enough it can become a strength. In our society today, people tend to believe that they aren’t good enough because of their weaknesses.
